The increasing demand for newer materials with versatile properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio; has made fiber reinforced composite materials a favourable choice in various applications, particularly in the automotive, aerospace, marine, sports and defense industries. Moreover, the properties of a composite material could be tailored for specific functions or applications. Despite its many attractive features, composite material fails in a complex manner involving matrix failure, fiber failure and delamination. This failure behaviour needs to be well established. The objective of this study is to perform failure analysis on a woven Kevlar/Epoxy composite laminate subjected to uniaxial tension and establish its failure trend. The lamination sequence is (θ4/04/-θ4)S where the angle, θ, ranges from 0o to 90o. The failure analysis was carried out using a commercial finite element software, Ansys and comparisons were made using analytical methods (Matlab). The values of stresses were computed and Maximum Stress Theory was employed to check for failure. The trend of failure, in terms of the failure curves (normalized first ply failure and last ply failure loads), for woven Kevlar/Epoxy was established. This study had produced new failure datas for woven Kevlar/Epoxy and thus, contributes significant knowledge about the failure behaviour of composite materials.

Abstract Composite materials are being used in many industrial applications such as automobile, aerospace, marine, oil and gas industries due to their high strength to weight ratio. The long-term effect of sustained loads and environmental factors that include exposure to UV light, temperature, and moisture have been under investigation by many researchers. The major objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of harsh environment (e.g. seawater and high temperature) on the structural properties of E-glass epoxy composite materials. These effects were studied in terms of seawater absorption, permeation of salt and contaminants, chemical and physical bonds at the interface and degradation in mechanical properties. Samples were immersed in seawater at room temperature (23°C), 65°C and 90°C for the duration of 6 months. Results show that seawater absorption increased with immersion time at 23°C and 65°C, whereas the weight of the specimens decreased at 90°C. The moisture causes swelling at 23°C and 65°C and breakdown of chemical bonds between fiber and matrix at 90°C. It is observed that high temperature accelerates the degradation of the E-glass epoxy composite. At 90°C, the tensile strength of E-glass epoxy sharply decreased by 72.92% but no significant change was observed in modulus of elasticity of the composite.

Composite materials have made way to various fields, including aerospace structures, underwater vehicles, automobiles and robot systems. Due to the high strength to weight ratio of composites, they serve as a suitable alternative to metals, therefore making the need for a reliable database of structural design more important. Most of the modern civilian and military aircraft use composite materials for their primary structural components (in addition to metals). One of the key areas in composite structural design involves the tensile strength of joints. In the present work, the lap joints fabricated from different orientations of GFRP (Glass fiber reinforced polymer) specimens are subjected to tensile test. The effect of fibre orientation on the tensile strength of lap joint is investigated both experimentally and computationally using conventional software package. The experimental results are compared with FEA using conventional software package ANSYS.

Aluminium (Al) is existing in a very large quantity found in the earth’s crust and third most abundant element. Al is easily available, it has a high strength to weight ratio and it is durable. Al alloy is light weight and corrosion resistant hence used in aircraft and automobile industries. Wear is loss of material from surfaces and the life of material decreases due to wear. Al 6061 has good mechanical properties, it exhibits good weldability and it has wear resistant properties. In the literature review, information about wear resistance properties of composites containing Al 6061 as a matrix is studied for different reinforcement materials for various applications. Very few researchers studied Al 6061 is a matrix material and bagasse ash as reinforced materials. In this paper, aluminum composite material manufacturing using the stir casting method is carried out for manufacturing because of flexibility, simplicity, and having mass production capability. The problem identification about improving the wear properties of Al 6061 matrix material reinforced bagasse ash has been explored and further, research objective and methodology for the same is discussed with flowcharts. The work carried still to date is reported in this working paper.

Presenting interesting aspects such as a high strength-to-weight ratio, Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic components are frequently used in the aerospace industry. The forming step, which conforms the reinforcement to a specific geometry, is a sensitive phase of the manufacturing process. In order to detect the occurrence of defects prior to any trial, forming methods are often simulated via finite element software. The presented work will detail the simulation validation of a double curved helicopter frame forming out of a unidirectional carbon fibre pre-impregnated material (M21E, Hexcel®). The finite element model was based on an explicit approach at a macroscopic level and developed via the commercially available software Visual-Crash PAM (ESI®) [1]. The validation was carried out on six different preforms. Measurements of the top layers were performed by an enhanced version of a 4D measuring system, originally developed for non-woven fabric [2], able to make reproducible photographic and height measurements (Fig. 1). Experimental results were then compared to simulated ones. Due to material specificities, the photo quality reached for non-crimp fabrics could not be achieved [2]. After hardware and software modifications, measurements and analyses were eventually successfully completed. The validation of the simulation reached an accuracy of 1° to 3° depending on the geometrical features of the preform (Fig. 2).
