A MODEL PROPOSAL FOR SELECTING THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

The choice of the structural system that crosses any space is the basic building design problem. Developments in building technology and materials science have provided innovative solutions to the problem of crossing space. In previous studies, criteria have been examined in the selection of structural systems, but it has not been clarified according what / how to choose the product. To cross any specified space with the most suitable system and material is still a complicated process. In this study, it is aimed to choose the most suitable system by include decision makers into the model to minimize the possible losses. In the proposed method, selection criteria were created from the distinguishing features of the systems and intermittent scale method was used while determining the criteria values. A decision mechanism is created by evaluating these criteria values with the percentages set by the user. In this way, it has been observed that the selection process gives fast results as it is handled systematically, and it also provides flexible selection opportunities because it places the preferences in the foreground. The model can be used for develop material selection for structure, and this differentiation can be utilized as base study for future research. For complex product selection can be developed a software.

Taking rammed earth residence of anji eco-house project in zhejiang province as an example, the ecological building technology used in its material selection, construction method, palisade structure practice, building design was analyzed, environmental impact of rammed earth residence was evaluated from two aspects of energy consumption and CO2 emission. It was found that energy consumption and annual CO2 emissions per area of rammed earth residence is far lower than that of common brick masonry structure residential, it shows the rammed earth residence has good ecological environmental protection performance and is worth to reference in other rural residential construction.

The modern business milieu is highly competitive due to vast technological advancement which makes employees a vital source of competitive advantage. Precisely, the recruitment process has become a key determinant of an organization’s success and a logistic capital resource to the human resource; thus, the process should be entirely modern. A conventional recruitment and selection process comprises of job analysis, manpower planning, and recruitment and selection. The current study seeks to explore employee recruitment practices and proposes areas of future research in Indian Railways using secondary data. It also gives recommendations on how to improve the recruitment practices in the government-owned Indian Railways. The trends investigated in the study include the applicant tracking software (ATS), use of video resumes, Chatbots, the utilization of social networks, and increased focus on passive candidates.

The building sector is responsible for extensive resource consumption and waste generation, resulting in high pressure on the environment. A way to potentially mitigate this is by including environmental considerations during building design through the concept known as eco-design. Despite the multiple available approaches of eco-design, the latter is not easily achieved in the building sector. The objective of this paper is to identify and discuss what barriers are currently hindering the implementation of eco-design in the building sector and by which measures building designers can include environmental considerations in their design process. Through a systematic literature review, several barriers to implementation were identified, the main ones being lack of suitable legislation, lack of knowledge amongst building designers, and lack of suitable tools for designers to use. Furthermore, two specific tools were identified that allow the inclusion of environmental consideration in building design, along with nine design strategies providing qualitative guidance on how to potentially minimize energy and material consumption, as well as waste generation. This paper contributes a holistic overview of the major barriers to and existing tools and method for the eco-design of buildings, and provides guidance for both future research and practice.

The selection of an optimal material is an important aspect of design for mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical or other application. Many factors (attributes) need to be considered in material selection process, and thus material selection problem is a multi-attribute decision making (MADM) problem. This paper proposes a new MADM method for material selection problem. G1 method does not need to test consistency of the judgment matrix. Thus it is better than AHP. In this paper, firstly, we use the G1 method to determine the attribute weight. Then TOPSIS method is used to calculate the closeness of the candidate materials with respect positive solution. A practical material selection case is used to demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

One popular procedure in the medical student selection process are multiple mini-interviews (MMIs), which are designed to assess social skills (e.g., empathy) by means of brief interview and role-play stations. However, it remains unclear whether MMIs reliably measure desired social skills or rather general performance differences that do not depend on specific social skills. Here, we provide a detailed investigation into the construct validity of MMIs, including the identification and quantification of performance facets (social skill-specific performance, station-specific performance, general performance) and their relations with other selection measures. We used data from three MMI samples (N = 376 applicants, 144 raters) that included six interview and role-play stations and multiple assessed social skills. Bayesian generalizability analyses show that, the largest amount of reliable MMI variance was accounted for by station-specific and general performance differences between applicants. Furthermore, there were low or no correlations with other selection measures. Our findings suggest that MMI ratings are less social skill-specific than originally conceptualized and are due more to general performance differences (across and within-stations). Future research should focus on the development of skill-specific MMI stations and on behavioral analyses on the extents to which performance differences are based on desirable skills versus undesired aspects.

The objective of this paper is to examine the determinants of the supplier selection process with green consideration. Thus, this analysis gathers a collection of factors from established literature of green supplier selection (GSS), including seven categories and 58 attributes. The objective of this research is to classify the key factors which are presented as qualitative information. Fuzzy logic rules are used to transform qualitative expert knowledge into numerical data. Then, we adopt the Delphi method (DM) to filter and rate unneeded factors according to their relevance. The results indicate 24 important factors for the GSS process. Five categories are included: Performance and technology ability, Environmental management, Pollution control, Quality and Service. The most significant factors are recognized as green research and development, eco-design, green image, green packaging and remanufacturing. Finally, the debate is held on the basis of the findings and future research are also recognized and stated.

Whilst sustainable construction relates to both a building’s structure and the use of proper life cycle processes, the selection of the most appropriate material/s is deemed a considerable undertaking. Throughout a building’s lifecycle that extends from design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, until demolition, the selection of sustainable material/s is a particularly crucial task for the development and establishment of such structures. Traditionally, there are three main materials for general construction: (1) Steel, (2) Concrete and (3) Timber. These materials not only influence the function within the structure, but also affect the operation cost and energy usage. Operation cost reduction and energy savings are typically elements of the sustainable construction sphere. However, in developing countries, there is a variety of highly critical factors, which can impact material selection as well as the long-term sustainability of the structure, including: Fire Performance, Environmental Impact, Structural Performance (strength and durability), and Functioning Capabilities. Accordingly, this paper will first compare the sustainability of these three key materials and then converse with appropriate processes for material selection. Attention will be given to the sustainable construction recompense associated with the different material selection factors. Doing so ensures a more sustainable built environment by means of an improved material selection process.

AbstractSperm contributes diverse RNAs to the zygote. While sperm small RNAs have been shown to be shaped by paternal environments and impact offspring phenotypes, we know little about long RNAs in sperm, including mRNAs and long non-coding RNAs. Here, by integrating PacBio single-molecule long reads with Illumina short reads, we found 2,778 sperm intact long transcript (SpILT) species in mouse. The SpILTs profile is evolutionarily conserved between rodents and primates. mRNAs encoding ribosomal proteins are enriched in SpILTs, and in mice they are sensitive to early trauma. Mouse and human SpILT profiles are determined by a post-transcriptional selection process during spermiogenesis, and are co-retained in sperm with base pair-complementary miRNAs. In sum, we have developed a bioinformatics pipeline to define intact transcripts, added SplLTs into the “sperm RNA code” for use in future research and potential diagnosis, and uncovered selection mechanism(s) controlling sperm RNA profiles.


Some examples are given of recent innovation in building materials which show that the common impression that there is little innovation is false. There has been, however, a conservative attitude, and design has to some extent been hampered by the need to choose materials from the existing catalogue. The pace of innovation is likely to be accelerated in the future by two trends: specification by performance and the emergence of teaching and research in materials science. Current research and applications in the fields of cement and concrete, glass technology, metals, plastics and surface coatings are mentioned by way of illustration and an estimate of future progress is made.

Studies investigating the benefits of green buildings can be approached by the affordance theory—the perceived properties of a thing that determine how it could possibly be used. This study focuses on the sustainable communication and education that a green building should provide. By applying the affordance theory, we examined whether a LEED-certified university campus building effectively communicates green design and sustainability to its users and if so, then how? We employed a questionnaire survey targeting campus users of a LEED-certified building by examining their awareness of the building's LEED status and perception of green design elements at multiple spatial scales, as well as their general knowledge on green building topics. We collected 177 questionnaires, of which 153 were qualified for statistical analysis. The results suggested that the building itself can afford to promote awareness among users, but cannot afford to educate users on general green building knowledge. We found that building users perceived green design at different spatial scales, preferring either product or space-related design. Our results indicate that future design should continue promoting the use of educational signage, which was found to be the most effective communicator of sustainability. The communication of green design to users with different spatial preferences remains a future research focus. Further studies on the innovative use of green building design as effective communicators are needed to promote sustainability education among the building users.
