Poised at a bifurcation, the educator preparation community in Vermont faced either the adoption of a generic product for the assessment of initial educator licensure candidates or the comprehensive revision of a longstanding state-based assessment portfolio. Using a case study approach and narrative methods, specifically the Narrative Policy Framework (McBeth, Jones, & Shanahan, 2014), the authors analyze a project in which teacher educators intervened to shape the direction of educator preparation policymaking by designing an innovative assessment portfolio and a collaborative calibration system. The analysis reveals insights about the policymaking arena and demonstrates the value of education-related policymaking that includes teacher educators as active agents in collaboration with state personnel and policymakers. The case contributes to the notion of policymaking as a narrative process. In this case, a narrative of hope emerged as a guiding storyline.

The need for technologically inclined teachers has emerged as society has become more and more digitized, emphasizing the need for new methods when it comes to incorporating technology into education. Teacher educators have a dual obligation in this regard; they should not only be able to use technology for their own teaching but should also contribute to the growth of the technical digital competence of teachers. The primary goal of this study is to investigate the nature of cognitions of Malaysian teachers regarding (using) digital technology (DT) in English as a Second Language (ESL) literacy instruction. The research employs an exploratory case study approach, focusing on three teachers in Malaysia in a rural setting. The teachers were observed and interviewed, and the findings indicate that while these educators believe in DT's ability to enhance teaching, they are skeptical about the adoption of the use of technology. The results suggest that teaching experience generates knowledge of teaching strategies and shapes the teaching practices of teachers.

An ethnographic case study approach to understanding women’s actions and reactions to husbands’ emigration—or potential emigration—offers a distinct set of challenges to a U.S.-based researcher.  International migration research in a foreign context likely offers challenges in language, culture, lifestyle, as well as potential gender norm impediments. A mixed methods approach contributed to successfully overcoming barriers through an array of research methods, strategies, and tactics, as well as practicing flexibility in data gathering methods. Even this researcher’s influence on the research was minimized and alleviated, to a degree, through ascertaining common ground with many of the women. Research with the women of San Juan Guelavía, Oaxaca, Mexico offered numerous and constant challenges, each overcome with ensuing rewards.
