AbstractEffects of La3+admixture in barium lanthanum titanate (BLT) ceramics system with colossal permittivity on performance of prospective piezoelectric cold plasma application were studied. Usage of cold atmospheric pressure plasma appears promising in terms of industrial and healthcare applications. Performed investigation provide consistent evaluation of doping lanthanum amount on piezoelectric coefficients values with simultaneous capability of charge accumulation for effective plasma generation. Modification of ferroelectric materials with heterovalent ions, however with the lower radii than the original atoms, significantly affects their domain mobility and consequently electromechanical properties. To determine the piezoelectric coefficients, the resonance-antiresonance method was implemented, and values of piezoelectric and dielectric parameters were recorded. Finally the results indicated that addition of 0.4 mol.% of La3+ions to the ceramic structure maximally increased the values of piezoelectric coefficient tod33= 20 pC/N and to huge dielectric constant toε33T= 29277.

Barium titanate (BaTiO3) attracts high scientific and technological attention due to good dielectric and electromechanical properties. Although BaTiO3 is one of the most frequently investigated ferroelectric materials, the need for finding new and/or improved synthesis methods of this material still exists. In this paper, a novel, mild synthesis route for producing tetragonal BaTiO3 from barium nitrate and Ti-oxalate precursor is presented. Morphology of the prepared and subsequently sintered BaTiO3 was determined by SEM. Particle size distribution of the as prepared powder was monitored by the laser diffraction. The phase composition, structure and lattice dynamics were investigated by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Finally, dielectric parameters were determined in the temperature range from 30 to 180?C, and within a variety of frequencies. Curie temperature was detected at 130?C.

The piezoelectric cold plasma generators (PCPG) allow for production of the piezoelectric direct discharge (PDD), which is a kind of cold atmospheric pressure plasma (APP). The subjects of this study are different arrays of PCPGs for large-area treatment of planar substrates. Two limiting factors are crucial for design of such arrays: (i) the parasitic coupling between PCPGs resulting in minimum allowed distance between devices, and (ii) the homogeneity of large area treatment, requiring an overlap of the activation zones resulting from each PCPG. The first limitation is investigated by the use of electric measurements. The minimum distance for operation of 4 cm between two PCPGs is determined by measurement of the energy coupling from an active PCPG to a passive one. The capacitive probe is used to evaluate the interference between signals generated by two neighboring PCPGs. The second limitation is examined by activation image recording (AIR). Two application examples illustrate the compromising these two limiting factors: the treatment of large area planar substrates by PCPG array, and the pretreatment of silicon wafers with an array of PCPG driven dielectric barrier discharges (DBD).

Cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) and plasma-activated medium (PAM) induce cell death in diverse cancer cells and may function as powerful anti-cancer agents. The main components responsible for the selective anti-cancer effects of CAP and PAM remain elusive. CAP or PAM induces selective cell death in hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines Hep3B and Huh7 containing populations with cancer stem cell markers. Here, we investigated the major component(s) of CAP and PAM for mediating the selective anti-proliferative effect on Hep3B and Huh7 cells. The anti-proliferative effect of CAP was mediated through the medium; however, the reactive oxygen species scavenger N-acetyl cysteine did not suppress PAM-induced cell death. Neither high concentrations of nitrite or nitrite/nitrate nor a low concentration of H2O2 present in the PAM containing sodium pyruvate affected the viability of Hep3B and Huh7 cells. Inhibitors of singlet oxygen, superoxide anions, and nitric oxide retained the capacity of PAM to induce anti-cancer effects. The anti-cancer effect was largely blocked in the PAM prepared by placing an aluminum metal mesh, but not a dielectric PVC mesh, between the plasma source and the medium. Hence, singlet oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide, and nitrite/nitrate are not the main factors responsible for PAM-mediated selective death in Hep3B and Huh7 cells. Other factors, such as charged particles including various ions in CAP and PAM, may induce selective anti-cancer effects in certain cancer cells.

In this study, we conducted experiments to investigate the effectiveness of a non-equilibrium Ar-N2 plasma jet generated by a Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Torch (CAPPLAT) at a sinusoidal voltage of 20 kV, frequency of 30 kHz with 10 slm of Ar gas and 100 sccm of N2 gas. Highly environmental stress resistant bacterial endospores of Bacillus subtilis, dried on an agar disc were exposed to the plasma discharge from the CAPPLAT for different durations. The viability of spores after plasma exposure was checked by counting CFUs by serial dilution method. We also measured the amount of released DPA (dipicolinic acid, pyridine-2, 6-dicarboxylic acid), which is exclusively found in endospore protoplast (cortex), to confirm the disintegration of the cortex. We could successfully inactivate a population of Bacillus endospores of about 1.0 × 107 to 4.0 × 107 spores/ml.
