AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate polyphenolic composition of different parts (leaves, flowers and fruits) of Crataegus almaatensis Pojark, an endemic plant of Kazakhstan, and compare it to a well known European Crataegus oxyacantha L. flowers. A Qual-Quant analysis was performed based on HR-MS measurements on 22 secondary metabolites: flavonoids and phenolic acids. Another goal was to evaluate the antioxidant potency of hawthorn extracts which was expressed in the total phenolic content and DPPH scavenging potency tests. Leaf extracts from C. almaatensis were found to be the most rich in metabolites and the most active in antiradical tests (IC50 value of 48 μg/ml and TPC of 218 mg/g). The weakest potential was determined for the fruit extract of this species. According to the performed principal component analysis (PCA), the fruit extracts were not correlated with other organs of the plant, and the metabolites responsible for the extracts’ differentiation were cyanidin 3-glucoside and quetcetin 3-galactoside. Based on a high correlation factor, the flowers of the Kazakh species was found to be as rich in polyphenols as the European hawthorn. The results of this study indicate that C. almaatensis is a promising source of natural antioxidants.

The aim of this study seeks to investigate the presence of qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytoconstituents of the flower of the plant Nelumbo nucifera. The present study provides evidence that successive solvent extract of Nelumbo nucifera contains medicinally important bioactive compounds and this justifies the use of plant species as traditional medicine for treatment of various diseases. Maximum phenolic and flavanoid content was observed in ethanolic extract of Nelumbo nucifera. The DPPH scavenging potential of the ethanolic extracts of the herbs ranged from 33%-55%. In the present study analysis of free radical scavenging activity and total phenolic and flavonoid content showed that mainly the ethanolic extract of flower extract can be the potent source of natural antioxidants. The oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) originates from West and Central Africa, and it is cultivated in Malaysia for its oil-producing fruits. Malaysia is the world’s second largest palm oil producer and the world’s largest exporter to date. Consequently, the Malaysian oil palm industry constantly generates a huge amount of biomass with the major contributor being the leaves. A large percentage of these leaves remain underutilized, making them a promising source of raw materials that can be converted into value-added products. The present review summarizes and discusses the flavonoid composition, total phenolic and flavonoid content, and the in vitro and in vivo pharmacological properties exhibited by the extracts of the leaves of E. guineensis. The purpose of this systematic review is to highlight the potential of valorizing the leaf extracts of the oil palm tree as pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical agents.

Leaf methanolic extracts of four wild Rose species (Rosa canina L., R. corymbifera Borkh., R. micrantha Borrer ex Sm and R. sempervirens L.) grown in Sicily were analysed in order to evaluate differences among indigenous roses which could be used such as source of bioactive compounds and natural antioxidants. Leaves were harvested during two different periods (June and October) and their morphological characteristics were described. Leaf content of chlorophylls, total anthocyanins, total flavonoids, total polyphenols (Folin-Ciocalteu method) and antioxidant activity (DPPH method) were determined. Results showed that the contents of chlorophylls and carotenoids were higher in leaves of all species harvested in June than in those harvested in October. On the contrary, total anthocyanins of R. micrantha and R. corymbifera leaves were higher in October. Total polyphenol content was higher in leaves of all species were harvested in October. No difference in total flavonoids content was recorded between the two harvest periods but only among the four species. Antioxidant activity was generally high in leaf extracts of all species in both periods and, particularly, in R. micrantha leaves harvested in June. These outcomes seem to support the assessment that leaves harvested from some Sicilian wild roses may be used as promising source of healthy compounds and that their content varies with the species and harvest period.

Wild plants are considered the richest source of essential nutrients and other beneficial phytochemicals. Hence, the objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional composition, antioxidant- and α-amylase inhibition activities of leaves and roots of selected Bangladeshi wild plants. These wild plants were found to have high fiber (13.78–22.26 g/100 g), protein (7.08–21.56 g/100 g) and ash (8.21–21.43 g/100 g) contents. The total phenolic and total flavonoid contents were significantly higher in the leaves than the roots. Additionally, antioxidant activity was evaluated using ferric-reducing antioxidant power, 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity assays and was strongly correlated with phenolic compounds. The leaf extracts of the selected plants also exhibited potent α-amylase inhibition (~71%) and were significantly higher than their root counterparts. Thus, the study findings concluded that the investigated plants were good sources of fiber, protein, mineral, natural antioxidant compounds and α-amylase inhibitors, and their increased intake could provide health benefits. The principal component analysis (PCA) of analyzed variables divided the samples into three clear groups, and the first two principal components accounted for 86.05% of the total data set variance.

This study was aimed at determining the phenolic composition and the antioxidant activity of leaves of Arbutus unedo populations belonging to seven Moroccan locations. Antioxidant activity is evaluated using two methods: scavenging effect on DPPH and scavenging effect on ABTS radicals. The Arbutus unedo leaf extracts displayed average values of 61.95 mg GAE, 3.60 mg QE, and 0.15 mg CE per g of dry weight (DW) in polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins contents, respectively. All extracts exhibited a strong antioxidant effect on both assays, presenting mean IC50 values of 4.22 in DPPH assay and 4.86 μg/ml in ABTS assay. Significant variability (P < 0.0001) was showed among surveyed populations; samples from the Chefchaouen location (CH) was revealed the highest total phenolic content (107.67 mg GAE/g DW) and the strongest antioxidant activity (IC50 values of 0.80 and 1.56 μg/ml, in DPPH and ABTS tests, respectively). The phenolic profile achieved by HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS was dominated by gallic acid, Gallic acid glucose derivative, and Galloylquinic acid derivative. A significant negative correlation (P < 0.05) was observed between the total phenolic content and the antioxidant activity. These results provide that Arbutus unedo leaves should be considered as a promising source of natural antioxidants, and as ingredients in complimentary food and nutraceutical products.

The agricultural processing industry usually generates a remarkable amount of by-products rich in bioactive compounds, which can be exploited for agri-food or nutraceutical applications. Pistachio’s hard shell is one of the major by-products from pistachio industrial processing. The aim of this work was the evaluation of pistachio shells as a potential source of natural antioxidants. We evaluated different extraction procedures by measuring total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and antioxidative activity (DPPH•, TEAC and ORAC). The microwave-assisted ethanol extract turned out to be the most promising and was fractionated by XAD-16 column chromatography, affording six fractions analyzed through HPLC/ESI-MS/MS and 1H-NMR to identify the main antioxidative constituents. Fractions Fr4–Fr6 demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity. Gallic acid and a monogalloylglusose isomer are the main phenolic constituents of Fr4. Both simple and complex phenolics, such as flavonoids and hydrolysable tannins, were identified in fractions Fr5 and Fr6; pentagalloylglucose and kaempferol, well-known for their antioxidant activity, are the most abundant constituents. The results highlighted that the proposed methodology can be an effective way to recover bioactive phenolic compounds from pistachio hard shell, making this by-product a promising source of compounds with potential applications in food and healthcare sectors.

The search for natural antioxidants to replace synthetic antioxidants is one of humanity’s health priorities. Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAP) contain phenolic compounds that act as natural antioxidants. The aim of this work is to study total phenols and flavonoids contents and evaluate the antioxidant power of various extracts of Calendula officinalis. Extracts were prepared in two steps: hot solid-liquid extraction, by Soxhlet and from the plant powder using a solvent (Methanol/water 70/30, Acetone/water 70/30) followed by a liquid-liquid extraction by splitting the obtained extract by two increasingly polarized solvents (Ethyl acetate and Butanol). Total phenols and flavonoids were evaluated using gallic acid and quercetin as standards, respectively. The antioxidant activity of extracts was determined by DPPH (2,2-diphényl 1-picrylhydrazyle) free radical reduction method. The two crude fractions of Methanol and Acetone presented the highest levels of total phenols (7,58±0,38 mg GAE/g dm and 6,80±0,34 mg GAE/g dm respectively), and flavonoids (7,37±0,37 mg QE/g dm and 7,93±0,40 mg QE/g dm respectively). Ethyl acetate fractions showed a high antioxidant activity. This study demonstrated that extracts from Calendula officinalis flowers present a promising source of natural antioxidant.

Aspidopterys indica (Willd.)W.Theob is endemic plant to Peninsular India belonging to family Malpighiaceae commonly known as  Chuttakulaa-tigga. The study aims to explore Pharmacognostic, Phytochemical evaluation, Total Phenolic, Flavonoid Content and Antioxidant Activities.The Pharmacognostic study comprises of Ultrasonic extraction, microscopy of Leaf and stem, fluorescence investigation, ash values, extractive values, Loss on drying, foaming index, crude fiber content, total phenolic and flavonoid content, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and Nitric oxide scavenging activities were assessed.The leaf shows presence of paracytic stomata, T shaped trichomes, Stem shows presence of vessels and pith. The physicochemical characters assessed as Total Ash value 10%, Water insoluble ash 0.5%, acid insoluble ash 8.5%, sulphated ash 4.2%, alcoholic extractive value 16.8%, water soluble extractive value 17.6%, chloroform extractive value 0.8%, Loss on drying 3.36%, Foaming index is <100, crude fiber content is 2.4%, phytoconstituents like tannins, flavonoids, phytosterols and alkaloids, carbohydrates are available in methanol, aqueous, chloroform extracts. Total phenolic content turned greatest in methanolic extract (90.69±2.86 mg GAE/g), Aqueous extract showed maximum total flavonoid content (109.89±0.33mg of QE/g). Methanolic extract indicated most intense 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging action IC50(134.97±8.37) whereas aqueous extract is potent to exclude nitrile radical IC50108.00±4.18). Total phenolic content - DPPH scavenging assay are positively correlated. The microscopical, physicochemical parameters are valuable to authenticate the identification and purity of the drug. A.indica is a perspective source of antioxidants.

The demand for Opuntia spp., cladodes has increased substantially due to their low caloric value, high fiber content, their nutritional and functional characteristics and beneficial effects and phytochemical composition. The aim of this work was to determine the content of biochemical components and the antioxidant capacity of the nopal developed under micro tunnel conditions, with VC as a source of fertilization. The plants were grown under micro tunnel conditions with the manual vermicompost application at 15, 30 and 45 t•ha-1. Between February and May 2019, four samplings of three cladodes (12 to 15 cm) from each treatment were obtained. Samples were stored at -20 °C prior to obtaining ethanol extracts. Total phenolic content and total flavonoids were determined using a modification of Folin-Ciocalteu and Zhishen methods, respectively. The ABTS+ test was performed with methodology proposed by Aubad-López. A split plot design, with two replicates, was used. The big plot corresponded to doses of vermicompost and subplots to the three varieties of nopal. Data were statistically analyzed by a two-way ANOVA with repeated measures. Statistical significance was obtained at 95 % confidence level (α = 0.05) using SPSS Statistics. The values recorded for the contents of total phenols, total flavonoids and the antioxidant activity, in the Chicomostoc, Chapingo and Narro varieties suggest that cladodes may be a promising source of natural antioxidants.

Ten different microalgal species were screened for their antioxidant activity using 2,2 ́-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay, both total phenolic and carotenoid contents were determined. The ethanolic extract ofOscillatoriasp. showed the highest antioxidant activity (69.1 %), while the greenChlorellasp. showed higher phenolic content (39.1 mg GAE g-1dry wt.) andScenedesmus obliquusrecorded higher carotenoid content (3.73 mg L-1), than cyanobacterial species Microalgal biomass plays a great role as a potential source of natural antioxidants, not only due to the carotenoids but also the phenolic compounds.
