Power to Gas: The Final Breakthrough for the Hydrogen Economy?

AbstractIn Germany more than 20% of the energy mix is made up of renewable energy and its share is rapidly increasing. The federal government expects renewables to account for 35% of Germany's electricity consumption by 2020, 50% by 2030 and 80% by 2050. According to the German Energy Agency, multi-billion euro investments in energy storage are expected by 2020 in order to reach these goals. The growth of this fluctuating energy supply has created demand for innovative storage options in Germany and it is accelerating the development of technologies in this field. Along with batteries and smart grids, hydrogen is expected to be one of the lead technologies. 2010 a commercialization roadmap for wind hydrogen was set up by the two northern federal states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein with the goal of utilizing surplus wind power for the electrolytic production of hydrogen. With the creation of the “performing energy initiative”, 2011, Brandenburg and Lower Saxony joined this undertaking. The aim of this initiative is to set up demonstration projects in order to develop and optimize wind-hydrogen hybrid systems and prepare their commercialization for the time after 2020. Beside the conversion of hydrogen into electricity and fuel for cars, further markets like raw material for the chemical, petrochemical, metallurgy and food industry are going to be addressed. Considering the fact there are over 40 caves currently used for natural gas storage with a total volume of 23.5 billion cubic meters and 400 000 km gas grid available in Germany, the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water sees opportunities for hydrogen to be fed into the existing natural gas grid network. The name of this concept is power-to-gas. According to the current DVGW-Standards natural gas in Germany can contain up to 5% hydrogen. The GERG, European Group on the Gas Research sees potential to increase this amount up to 6% to 20%. Power-to-gas could serve both for fuel and for the storage of extra energy produced by renewable sources. The hydrogen produced via electrolysis could be drawn upon – directly or as synthetic natural gas (SNG) in a second additional methanation process step – to provide electricity by means of CCGT (combined cycle gas turbines) or CHP (combined heat and power) using for example fuel cells. It could also address the industrial and household heat market. DVGW is furthermore participating in the “Power-to-Gas Platform” that was set up in 2012 by the German Energy Agency, bringing together RnD institutes, renewable energy project developers and park operators, utilities, underground storage providers in order to create political support for this new technology. Demonstration projects will be completed by 2020 in order to develop business models (for storage, production and trade of “green gas”) and devices (electrolysers, turbines, smart gas metering, compressors, storage capacities amongst others) to enable the implementation of this concept on a broad scale. This means that a multitude of industrial players will be involved in the changes that will occur in the value chain: utilities (electricity, gas), power technology companies, car makers, heating device manufacturers, but also manufacturers of measurement, regulation and control devices, suppliers of the biogas and methanation industry. Germany is the pioneer in this field. This technology however increasingly interests its neighbours, with project developments in France, Italy, Spain, and UK but also in North America and North Africa. Germany can contribute its valuable experience (e.g. legal framework for power-to-gas) to the development of these industries. German participants in demonstration projects in these countries could for example be renewable energy park operators, RnD institutes and suppliers.

Basing on the figure “Power to Hydrogen / Power to Gas”, shown by the authors at the last HTRSE conference, this time it will be illustrated, that green hydrogen - produced with renewable energy - has the potential to become a basic material in the economy at general instead of fossil one. Synergies are available. But the low price of hydrogen produced via steam reformation of natural gas prevents to reach business cases for environment friendly products as long as the European laws and regulations do not support production and use of green hydrogen for instance by a tax for CO2 emission.

The effect of synthetic natural gas (SNG) and mixture of syngas and SNG fed to Natural Gas Combined-Cycle (NGCC) plants is presented in this study via a system-level simulation model. The commercial chemical process simulator, Pro/II®V8.1.1, was used in the study to build the analysis model. The NGCC plant consists of gas turbine (GT), heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and steam turbine (ST). The study envisages two analyses as the basic and feasibility cases. The former is the benchmark case which is verified by the reference data with the GE 7FB gas turbine. According to vendor’s specification, the typical net plant efficiency of GE 7FB NGCC with two gas turbines to one steam turbine is 57.5% (LHV), and the efficiency is the benchmark in the simulation model built in the study. The latter introduces a feasibility study with actual parameters in Taiwan. The SNG-fed GE 7FB based combined-cycle is evaluated, and the mixture of SNG and syngas is also evaluated to compare the difference of overall performance between the two cases. The maximum ratio of syngas to SNG is 0.14 due to the constraint for keeping the composition of methane at a value of 80 mol%, to meet the minimum requirement of NG in Taiwan. The results show that the efficiency in either case of SNG or mixture of SNG and syngas is slightly lower than the counterpart in the benchmark one. Because the price of natural gas is much higher than that of coal, it results in higher idle capacity of NGCC. The advantage of adopting SNG in Taiwan is that it could increase the capacity factor of combined-cycles in Taiwan. The study shows a possible way to use coal and reduce the CO2emission, since coal provides nearly half of the electricity generation in Taiwan in recent years.

The increase in price of natural gas and the need for a cleaner technology to generate electricity has motivated the power industry to move towards Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) plants. The system uses a low heating value fuel such as coal or biomass that is gasified to produce a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The potential for efficiency improvement and the decrease in emissions resulting from this process compared to coal-fired power plants are strong evidence to the argument that IGCC technology will be a key player in the future of power generation. In addition to new IGCC plants, and as a result of new emissions regulations, industry is looking at possibilities for retrofitting existing natural gas plants. This paper studies the feasibility of retrofitting existing gas turbines of Natural Gas Combined Cycle (NGCC) power plants to burn syngas, with a focus on the water/steam cycle design limitations and necessary changes. It shows how the gasification island processes can be treated independently and then integrated with the power block to make retrofitting possible. This paper provides a starting point to incorporate the gasification technology to current natural gas plants with minor redesigns.

A new reheat gas turbine system is being developed as a national project by the “Engineering Research Association for Advanced Gas Turbines” of Japan. The machine consists of two axial flow compressors, three turbines, intercooler, combustor and reheater. The pilot plant is expected to go into operation in 1982, and a prototype plant will be set up in 1984. The major objective of this reheat gas turbine is application to a combined cycle power plant, with LNG burning, and the final target of combined cycle thermal efficiency is to be 55 percent (LHV).

This paper presents the results of an evaluation of advanced combined cycle gas turbine plants with precombustion capture of CO2 from natural gas. In particular, the designs are carried out with the objectives of high efficiency, low capital cost, and low emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The novel cycles introduced in this paper are comprised of a high-pressure syngas generation island, in which an air-blown partial oxidation reformer is used to generate syngas from natural gas, and a power island, in which a CO2-lean syngas is burnt in a large frame machine. In order to reduce the efficiency penalty of natural gas reforming, a significant effort is spent evaluating and optimizing alternatives to recover the heat released during the process. CO2 is removed from the shifted syngas using either CO2 absorbing solvents or a CO2 membrane. CO2 separation membranes, in particular, have the potential for considerable cost or energy savings compared with conventional solvent-based separation and benefit from the high-pressure level of the syngas generation island. A feasibility analysis and a cycle performance evaluation are carried out for large frame gas turbines such as the 9FB. Both short-term and long-term solutions have been investigated. An analysis of the cost of CO2 avoided is presented, including an evaluation of the cost of modifying the combined cycle due to CO2 separation. The paper describes a power plant reaching the performance targets of 50% net cycle efficiency and 80% CO2 capture, as well as the cost target of 30$ per ton of CO2 avoided (2006 Q1 basis). This paper indicates a development path to this power plant that minimizes technical risks by incremental implementation of new technology.

Combined heat and power (CHP), is an application that utilizes the exhaust heat generated from a gas turbine and converts it into a useful energy source for heating & cooling, or additional electric generation in combined cycle configurations. Compared to simple-cycle plants with no heat recovery, CHP plants emit fewer greenhouse gasses and other emissions, while generating significantly more useful energy per unit of fuel consumed. Clean plants are easier to permit, build and operate. Because of these advantages, Aeroderivative gas turbines will be a major part of global CHP growth, particularly in China. In order to improve energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions, China is working to build ∼1000 new plants of Natural Gas Distributed Energy System (NG-DES) in the next five years. These plants will replace conventional coal-fired plants with combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) systems. China power segments require an extensive steam supply for cooling, heating and industrial process steam demands, as well as higher peak loads due to high population densities and manufacturing growth rates. GE Energy Aero recently entered the CCHP segment in China, and supported the promotion of codes and standards for NG-DES policy, and is developing optimized CCHP gas turbine packages to meet requirements. This paper reviews those policies and requirements, and presents technical case studies on CCHP applications. Appendix B highlights China’s draft “Guidance Opinions on Developing Natural-Gas Distributed Energy.”


Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants utilize thermal conversion of direct solar irradiation. A trough or tower configuration focuses solar radiation and heats up oil or molten salt that subsequently in high temperature heat exchangers generate steam for power generation. High temperature molten salt can be stored and the stored heat can thus increase the load factor and the usability for a CSP plant, e.g. to cover evening peak demand. In the HYSOL concept (HYbrid SOLar) such configuration is extended further to include a gas turbine fuelled by upgraded biogas or natural gas. The optimised integrated HYSOL concept, therefore, becomes a fully dispatchable (offering firm power) and fully renewable energy source (RES) based power supply alternative, offering CO2-free electricity in regions with sufficient solar resources. The economic feasibility of HYSOL configurations is addressed in this paper. The analysis is performed from a socio- and private- economic perspective. In the socio-economic analysis, the CO2 free HYSOL alternative is discussed relative to conventional reference firm power generation technologies. In particular the HYSOL performance relative to new power plants based on natural gas (NG) such as open cycle or combined cycle gas turbines (OCGT or CCGT) are in focus. In the corporate-economic analysis the focus is on the uncertain technical and economic parameters. The core of the analyses is based on the LCOE economic indicator. In the corporate economic analysis, NPV and IRR are furthermore used to assess the feasibility. The feasibility of renewable based HYSOL power plant configurations attuned to specific electricity consumption patterns in selected regions with promising solar energy potentials are discussed.

This paper describes the modeling of a 27 MW combined cycle cogeneration plant with 10,000 tons chilled water central cooling facility. The cogeneration plant is designed to provide heating, cooling and electricity from a single fuel source viz., natural gas, though the gas turbines do have an inbuilt dual fuel combustion system. The topping cycle of the combined cycle cogeneration plant consists of two gas turbines each producing 11 MW of electric power at full load. The energy of the exhaust gases from these gas turbines is then utilized to generate steam in two heat recovery steam generators. The heat recovery steam generators are duct fired using natural gas to meet the peak steam load. In the bottoming part of the combined cycle, the steam from the heat recovery steam generators is expanded in a backpressure steam turbine to supply steam to the campus at about 963 kPa, generating an additional 5.5 MW of electric power in this process. There is no condenser wherein the campus acts as a sink for the steam. The central cooling facility is designed to supply 10,000 tons of chilled water out of which 3800 tons is supplied by two steam driven centrifugal chillers, which utilize a part of the steam supplied to the campus and the remaining by the centrifugal electric chillers. The combined cycle cogeneration plant along with the central chilled watercooling facility is modeled in a commercially available flexible cogeneration software package. The model is built based on the design data available from design manuals of gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators, backpressure steam turbine and centrifugal chillers. A parametric study is also done on the model to study the effect of different parameters like fuel flow rate, temperature etc on the output of the turbine and efficiency of the plant. Modeling of the inlet air-cooling of the gas turbine using an absorption chiller and electric chiller is also presented. Finally the paper discusses these results.

This article presents a study on new electric power gas turbines and the advent of shale natural gas, which now are upending electrical energy markets. Energy Information Administration (EIA) results show that total electrical production cost for a conventional coal plant would be 9.8 cents/kWh, while a conventional natural gas fueled gas turbine combined cycle plant would be a much lower at 6.6 cents/kWh. Furthermore, EIA estimates that 70% of new US power plants will be fueled by natural gas. Gas turbines are the prime movers for the modern combined cycle power plant. On the natural gas side of the recently upended electrical energy markets, new shale gas production and the continued development of worldwide liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities provide the other element of synergism. The US natural gas prices are now low enough to compete directly with coal. The study concludes that the natural gas fueled gas turbine will continue to be a growing part of the world’s electric power generation.
