Abstract The question of fiction is omnipresent within the work of Paul Ricoeur throughout his prolific career. However, Ricoeur raises the questions of fiction in relation to other issues such the symbol, metaphor and narrative. This article sets out to foreground a traditional problem of fiction and logic, which is termed the existence of non-existent objects, in relation to the Paul Ricoeur’s work on narrative. Ricoeur’s understanding of fiction takes place within his overall philosophical anthropology where the fictions and histories make up the very nature of identity both personal and collective. The existence of non-existent objects demonstrates a dichotomy between fiction and history, non-existent objects can exist as fictional objects. The very possibility of the existence of fictional objects entails ontological status considerations. What ontological status do fictional objects have? Ricoeur develops a concept of narrative configuration which is akin to the Kantian productive imagination and configuration frames the question historical narrative and fictional narrative. It is demonstrated that the ontological status of fictional objects can be best understood in a model of possible worlds.

Abstract: The article aims at presenting the theory of recognition in the thought of Paul Ricoeur. In order to do so, it is divided in two parts. The first follows the French philosopher in his project to construct a philosophical anthropology based on the Cartesian philosophy of Reflection as well as on the Husserlian phenomenology. However, both led him to an impasse that made him detach himself from the solipsist temptation of the philosophies of consciousness. Instead, he proposed an extended mediation that encompassed the world of symbols, texts and action. The idea of recognition is therefore embedded in the development of his thinking. The second part of this paper reconstructs the argument of Ricoeur’s book The course of recognition, through six fundamental themes: the obstacles of recognition; forsaking representation; “the test of the unrecognizable”; the reconstruction of identity; the challenge of otherness; the demand for peace.

According to Ricoeur, history and fiction share similar narrative resources, but at the same time they preserve differences. Although the tropological character of the historical narrative is not rejected, the philosopher observes that historiography is held down by the event and by documentary evidence, which exert ethical coercion, attributing commitments to the historian’s craft. Writers also bring responsibilities when representing past facts in fiction. Faced with the freedom of literary creation, the coercion that imprisons a writer is the establishment of verisimilitude, an ethical category as strong as the debt of historians in restoring historical consciousness. In order to measure the reflections of Paul Ricoeur, this study draws on the novel The anatomy of martyrs, by João Tordo, observing the concerns of such narrative with historiographical practice. This is illustrated from the action of the main character, who seeks to revisit an important episode in Portuguese national life during the Salazar period. Keywords: Paul Ricoeur. History, Fiction. The aporias of time that Paul Ricœur identifies in the conclusion to his three-volume Time and Narrative offer a fecund starting-point from which to consider how the poetics of narrativity figures in a philosophy of the will. By setting the poetics of narrativity against the aporetics of temporality, Ricoeur highlights the narrative art’s operative power in drawing together incidents and events in answer to time’s dispersion across the present, the past, and the future. In turn, the confession of the limits of narrative opens the way to a broader consideration of the idea of the unity of history in the absence of a meta-historical plot. This idea calls for a reflection on the ethical and political imperative of making freedom a reality for all. By taking the theory of freedom’s actualization as a touchstone, I argue that the vision of a reconciled humanity that for Ricœur is the intended object of the poetics of the will acquires the force of a directive idea. The capacity to refashion the real from within thus proves to be decisive for drawing out the connection between the aporetics of temporality, the poetics of narrativity, and Ricœur’s philosophical anthropology.

The narrative was - and is - an object of reflection in history by different authors and different approaches. The article follows the movement of analysis that focuses on the historical narrative to broaden the reflection on the “narrative status” of History - academic and didactic – in order to understand the limits and possibilities of its claim to represent the past. With this problematization, the aim is to place the narrative as the focus of analysis in the teaching of History as a possible way to face the disputes of narratives that appear in the daily life of the classroom. To this end, it mobilizes different authors, especially Paul Ricoeur, to explain what the historical narrative consists of and which procedures give legitimacy and recognition to its representation of the past. Through the mobilized framework, it is argued that the procedures which constitute historical narrative can be used as a viable strategy to deal with classroom narrative disputes and to promote understanding of the relationship of trust and credibility that this written report rejoices in the task of representing the past.
