AbstractIn the discussion of regional development factors in recent years, more and more importance has been attributed to territory, locality, site specificity and endogenous resources, as evidenced on theoretical grounds by the concept of territorial capital (Camagni 2008) and regional, place-based policy. This article aims to identify the elements of territorial capital that play a key role in the process of changing the development path of an underdeveloped region - Podkarpackie - as well as ascertaining what consequences territorial capital has for development planning within regional policy. The research highlights the importance of the immobile and intangible development factors - a high level of social capital, extensive networks and the ability to cooperate - which have helped to eliminate the limitations resulting from the weakness of other factors (especially material factors, such as private capital and low GDP).

Ethiopia’s stellar growth performance, guided by amicable development planning, has created a common and shared agenda for economic transformation that has fostered better social outcomes in poverty, universal education, child health, and combating AIDS. This chapter attempts to explore the interest and fascination surrounding the Ethiopian development path, beginning with a consideration of the policy innovations that underpin the experience. It identifies the similarities that connect lessons from three disparate sectoral perspectives—industrialization, social protection/food security, and the success story of Ethiopian Airlines—underlining the pivotal role of coherence, ambition, and innovation in Ethiopia’s development trajectory. Central to these characteristics is the notion that structural transformation is an aggregate of socio-economic sector successes and its potential replicability by other African countries.

Social capital discourse has come to be the foremost and essential aspects in achieving sustainable development, participatory democracy and just cities. Indonesia is like most Asian countries where people spatially and socially co-live in a community that is related to a network of small clusters. However, the formal study related to social capital is hardly founded. Based on its characters, Gotong Royong which is a socio-cultural ethic of the togetherness philosophy in Indonesia can be perceived as an Indonesian social capital practice. Advancing social capital through participatory approaches will need a deep consideration about the role of professional and community engagement. Successful collaborations between wider actors in participatory approaches could lead to a fundamental transformation that can both preserve and nurture social capital values. High level of social capital within communities can potentially underpin the successful community participation towards communal goals.

This study examined the antecedents of travel intentions in the context of Chinese short-video platforms. Based on a review of the literature on travel intentions, we proposed an integrated model containing determinants of social capital and an elaboration likelihood model. In total, the data from 496 valid questionnaires were analyzed through structural equation modeling (SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). The SEM findings revealed that the determinants of social capital influenced the characteristics of tourist-generated content (TGC), which in turn affected users’ travel intentions. Homophily and interpersonal influence were direct antecedents of travel intentions, whereas tie strength non-significantly affected travel intentions. The fsQCA results revealed four configurations of the determinants of social capital and TGC characteristics required to achieve a high level of travel intention. Source credibility was discovered to be a necessary but not sufficient condition for travel intention. These findings offer insights for both academics and tourism marketers.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to understand the development of social capital in an Arab business environment, and provide an in-depth description of the nature and role of three key Arabic business relationship characteristics (ehsan,et-mooneandwasta), their impact on each other and key influencing factors.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative research design was used, in which face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with innovation teams (22 team members) at six industrial small and medium-sized enterprises in Saudi Arabia. The interviews were recorded and transcribed, then analyzed (thematic coding) through NVivo.FindingsThe findings suggest thatwasta,ehsanandet-moonealign closely with the three social capital dimensions (structural, cognitive and relational); thus, developing these three relationship characteristics most likely results in developing social capital. The findings also expand the description of the three business relationship characteristics. Moreover,ehsan,et-mooneandwastaappear to influence each other, and are affected by other factors such as an individual’s age and position, and the duration of the relationship.Ehsanhas a positive influence on the development ofet-moone, while the existence ofet-mooneappears to be necessary for the establishment ofwasta-capital. A high level ofehsanmight influence the relationship betweenet-mooneandwasta-use and limit the negative usage ofwasta.Practical implicationsInternational managers can improve the level ofehsanin their organizational and business relationships through assigning incentives and playing the role of moral champion to encourageehsanbehavior. Managers aiming to increaseet-moonemay choose team members with a high level ofehsan, emphasizing the development of personal relationships, and providing opportunities for socialization both inside and outside the workplace. A high level ofehsanandet-moonewill assist managers to develop and usewasta.Originality/valueThis study makes a threefold contribution to the literature. First, it provides an expanded description of the three Arabic business relationship characteristics and how they align closely with the dimensions of social capital.Wastaaligns with the structural dimension andehsanaligns with the cognitive dimension, whileet-moonealigns closely with the relational dimension. Second, it suggests and shows how the three relationship characteristics might interact with each other.Ehsanappears to influenceet-moone, and also the relationship betweenet-mooneandwasta.Et-mooneappears to have a positive influence onwastause. Third, the findings also indicate that there might be other factors (e.g. age and position) that influence the interactions between the three business relationship characteristics.

Human resource is the major source of competitive advantages for an enterprise. Discussions aiming at the role of human resource in educational communities are progressing in past years. From the mobility of human resource in an organization, retaining human assets or reducing the mobility to the lowest are considered as the professional commitment of human resource and the direction for efforts. A new viewpoint about the role of human resource reveals that the role of human resource is to change social capital into the driving force of competitive advantages of an organization. It might affect the presentation of different roles of human resource in various corporate characteristics. For this reason, the effects of high-tech corporate characteristics on social capital and role of human resource management are discussed in this study. Aiming at Kunshan High-tech Industrial Development Zone, the management and the employees in the manufacturers are distributed 1000 copies of questionnaires, and 683 valid copies are retrieved, with the retrieval rate 68%. The research results show 1. significantly positive effects of social capital on the role of human resource, 2. remarkably positive effects of corporate characteristics on social capital, and 3. notably positive effects of corporate characteristics on the role of human resource. It is expected to verify richer and more diverse effects for the reference of successive research and practice communities.

Modern society is dealing with a multitude of data, with predictions that by 2025 the produced data will amount to 160 zettabytes. A generation of useful information and derivation of knowledge from this data is becoming a laborious task, while transfer of relevant knowledge through social networks is becoming even more important. Although there are different definitions of social capital, there is a high level of compliance so that, unlike other concepts related to socio-economic development, social capital is unique because it is relational. It is obvious that the fundamental idea expressed in the concept of social capital is simple: social networks are important, they have value for people and organizations that are involved in this network. The aim of this paper is to analyze the role of social networks in the diffusion of knowledge and information and its contribution to the strengthening of innovative capacities. One of the main reasons for the growing interest in the role of social networks in the creation and transfer of knowledge is that most of the relevant knowledge today has an implicit character and cannot be easily transferred. The compilation method will be used in the paper for the purpose of reviewing existing theoretical and empirical research in this field. The method of description, as a procedure for simple description or reading of facts and processes, will be related to explanations of the notion of more important features of the described facts, their legality and causal connections and relationship.

The relevance and practical significance of the research is determined by the increasing role of intellectual resources in the conditions of digitalization of entrepreneurship. Along with other types, intellectual resources determine the competitiveness of trade enterprises and act as a key factor in their development. One of the main features that characterize the modern economy is a high level of competition, which ultimately leads to the need to maximize the use of all available resources, actively introduce innovative technologies, and quickly adapt to changing market conditions. The scope of the study is expanded by the fact that during the coronavirus pandemic, commercial entrepreneurship in Russia was greatly transformed. suffered and transformed. The pandemic has pushed commerce to online platforms, and contributed to the development of a favorable environment for e-commerce. Currently, a wide range of digital innovations are used in commercial entrepreneurship. The COVID-19 crisis has accelerated the spread of e-commerce to new firms, customers, and products. This allowed the trade enterprises to continue working, despite the limitations of contacts. At the same time, the possession of intellectual capital has a significant impact on the competitiveness of firms. The importance of intangible assets as a source of competitive advantages is growing rapidly. Blockchain and related technologies are currently relevant, many industries are exploring their capabilities, and new ways to use it are constantly emerging. Since the distributed ledger technology creates a secure, verified, and immutable information chain, it finds application in brand protection and enforcement, and is used to track.

In an ecological dynamics rationale, the development of expertise in sports is shaped by interactions of personal, task and environmental constraints. A notable outcome of this process is the distinctive performance styles of athletes shaped by socio-cultural-historical constraints. To understand this process, we examined the role of socio-cultural constraints shaping the development of skill in Brazilian football players at the macrosystem level. A range of data sources were inductively generated and analysed through the qualitative interpretative paradigm, including historical contextual analysis, participant observation, and unstructured interviews. Malandragem (i.e., cunning) emerged as a major focus and our findings suggested that behavioural characteristics, such as mischief and deception, are common attributes valued by many elite Brazilian footballers. Our analysis suggests how the value system of Malandragem is a product of the socio-cultural constraints primarily influenced by the Mulattos’ cultural traditions, historically interacting with particular socio-economic conditions. In Brazil, Malandragem can manifest itself through the Ginga (i.e., body sway) playing style in which footballers move deceptively to gain competitive advantages over opponents. Whilst the theatrical antics of contemporary Malandros (i.e., tricksters and/or streetwise persons), such as Neymar Junior, are frowned upon by many football critics, we argue that some aspects of being Malandro may be contributing to the development of a high level of perceptual-motor and cognitive functioning that has underpinned the Ginga playing style in Brazilian football for many decades.

The article analyzes the role of museums in the formation of social capital in society, presents the possibilities of museum-type institutions in this context for Ukrainian society. The advantages of societies with a high level of social capital are highlighted; the urgency of this problem for our country is substantiated. Museums are a separate group of exceptional social institutions, the meaning of existence and the true nature of which was revealed and manifested only in the XXI century. Today, museums have gone far beyond their vision of decades past - in developed economies, they are becoming agents of social change, transforming social practices, helping to reduce antisocial phenomena and bringing significant benefits to local communities. We can compare how drastically the interpretation of the museum's mission and the vector of its activity in the era of globalization have changed in just some 20-30 years. Over the last decade, museums in Ukraine have responded more confidently to social and political problems in society, participated more actively in the consolidation of society, and generated new practices of cooperation with the local groups. The intensity of the media environment, the rapid development of IT technologies help individual museums to more openly broadcast their communicative mission. At the present stage society is slowly but surely changing. Post-communist transformation, unpredictability of the political future, economic problems and military aggression in the east of the country have led to problems of adaptation of the population to new socio-economic conditions and test the resilience of our communities. All this changes everyday life and requires adaptation to new conditions. In this direction, provided a well-thought-out strategy and appropriate regulatory framework, museums have significant positive potential.
