AbstractWith the increasing popularity of coated paper, it has been more widely used in printing, publishing, product packaging and commercial promotion. However, coated paper is prone to cracks after printing and folding which exposes to a white area which is referred to as fold cracking. This study investigated the coating properties of paper and coating factors influencing the fold cracking and aimed to provide guidance on how to reduce the problems of fold cracking. This paper mainly discusses the effects of pigment proportion, binder dosage, solids content, coating thickness and calendering pressure on fold cracking of coated paper after printing. Experiments show that when the coating consisted entirely of calcium carbonate, the degree of fold cracking is most serious. With the addition of kaolin, the fold cracking reduces. When the ratio of the number of parts of calcium carbonate to kaolin is 25/75, the area of fold cracking reaches its minimum value of 10.28 %. With increasing solids content of the coating, the fold cracking decreases initially and then increases. When the solids content is 55 %, the fold cracking reaches a minimum. Increased latex content reduced coating thickness and an increase in calendering pressure gradually reduce the degree of fold cracking.

The main goal of this research is to apply AFM to the analysis of coated paper topography in order to find out relationships between sheet gloss and some parameters obtained from AFM, such as roughness and fractal dimension (D). Flooding technique was also developed using appropriated software. Number of hills/flooding volume for 25%, 50% and 75% flooded volume was applied in this research. Ground calcium carbonate and precipitated calcium carbonate were applied in coating colour formulations, alone and blended in three formulations, 75:25, 50:50 and 25:75. The results obtained showed high correlations between sheet gloss with fractal dimension (D) parameter. Finally, flooding technique showed to be very interesting, all of them gave useful information in interpreting the influence of topography on sheet gloss.

Abstract The inorganic core-shell pigment {\mathrm{CaCO}_{3}}@{\mathrm{SiO}_{2}} was synthesized using a sol-gel method, and the pigment was applied as a surface coating on inkjet paper to study the influence of inorganic core-shell pigments on the dynamic permeability, surface properties, optical properties and inkjet-printing performance of coated paper. {\mathrm{CaCO}_{3}}@{\mathrm{SiO}_{2}} prepared using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) had better coverage than that prepared using polystyrene sodium sulfate (PSS) dispersant. The CMC-prepared {\mathrm{CaCO}_{3}}@{\mathrm{SiO}_{2}}-a had improved dispersibility, and the solids content of the coating reached 35 %. Inorganic core-shell pigments improve the surface and optical properties of the coated paper, making them similar to those of a reference calcium carbonate-coated paper. The smoothness and gloss improved by 60.8 % and 78.4 %, respectively, compared with those of silica-coated paper. The inkjet solid density and dot definition increased by 28.8 % and 4.1 %, respectively, compared with those of the calcium carbonate-coated paper. Preparing inorganic core-shell pigment {\mathrm{CaCO}_{3}}@{\mathrm{SiO}_{2}} is an effective method to fabricate inkjet printing coatings with advantageous microstructures for ink absorption.

Cracking at the fold of publication and packaging paper grades is a serious problem that can lead to rejection of product. Recent work has revealed some basic mechanisms and the influence of various parameters on the extent of crack area, but no studies are reported using coating layers with known mechanical properties, especially for double-coated systems. In this study, coating layers with different and known mechanical properties were used to characterize crack formation during folding. The coating formulations were applied on two different basis weight papers, and the coated papers were folded. The binder systems in these formulations were different combinations of a styrene-butadiene latex and mixtures of latex and starch for two different pigment volume concentrations (PVC). Both types of papers were coated with single and double layers. The folded area was scanned with a high-resolution scanner while the samples were kept at their folded angle. The scanned images were analyzed within a constant area. The crack areas were reported for different types of papers, binder system and PVC values. As PVC, starch content, and paper basis weight increased, the crack area increased. Double layer coated papers with high PVC and high starch content at the top layer had more cracks in comparison with a single layer coated paper, but when the PVC of the top layer was low, cracking area decreased. No measurable cracking was observed when the top layer was formulated with a 100% latex layer.

The physical structure of coating layer have an important influence on transferring and setting of the printing ink. In this study, the effect of pigment on surface microstructure and surface free energy was investigated. The findings indicated that the pigment affected the pore size, depth and distribution of the coated paper surface. Kaolin pigment compared with calcium carbonate pigment was good to improve the paper surface smoothness. Surface free energy of kaolin pigment coating was higher than calcium carbonate pigment coating, which showed that surface wettability of coating with kaolin pigment was better than calcium carbonate pigment.

The article investigates the surface and optical properties of calcium carbonate paper obtained at the UzbekChinese enterprise Fergana stone paper company (Uzbekistan), in order to identify the possibility of their use at printing enterprises for printing multicolor products using traditional printing methods. According to the results of a quantitative assessment of the surface quality by the indirect Beck method, we can say that paper sample 1 has a smoothness like coated paper (750–1500 s), paper samples 2 and 3 – like calendered paper, so that these paper samples can be recommended for prints with increased quality requirements. Smaller values of roughness Ra and small depressions, expressed by darkening in the topographic AFM images, characterized sufficient homogeneity and density of the structure. It was also revealed that the surface of the paper samples has a high ability to specularly reflect the incident light, since the percentage of surface reflection is similar to that of coated papers. Samples of paper have a whiteness of about 90 % and do not have a tint, since the difference between the maximum and minimum values of the reflection coefficients on a white stack is not more than 10 %. The tested paper samples can be recommended without restrictions for double-sided printing, since the opacity index is more than 92 %.

In hot-dip galvanizing process, air jet wiping control is so crucial to determine the coating thickness and uniformity of the zinc layer on the steel strip. A numerical simulation of gas-jet wiping in hot-dip galvanizing was conducted to minimize the occurrence of edge over coating (EOC). The causes of EOC were identified by contrasting and analyzing the airflow fields on the strip edge with and without a baffle. The factors influencing the airflow field on the strip edge during the change in the gap between the baffle and the strip edge were also analyzed. The effect of the distance between the air knife and the strip was evaluated. Technological parameters with on-site guidance role were obtained by combining them with the actual production to elucidate the role of the baffle in restraining the occurrence of EOC. The uniform distribution of pressure and coating thickness on the strip is achieved when the distance of the baffle from the strip edge is about 0.3 times of the jetting distance.
