Abstract The goal of this study is to examine theoretically radiation absorption properties of zinc alumino bismuth borate (BZnAlBiSm) glasses with chemical formula 60B2O3-9ZnO-(30-x)Al2O3-xBi2O3-1Sm2O3 where x = 5, 10, 15 and 20 mol%. The linear and mass attenuation coefficents of BZnAlBiSm glasses turn out as this trend BZnAlBiSm-1<BZnAlBiSm-2<BZnAlBiSm-3<BZnAlBiSm-4. The BZnAlBiSm-4 with the smallest half value layers, tenth value layers and mean free paths in the examined energy ranges has the superior radiation shielding characteristics among the BZnAlBiSm glasses. The BZnAlBiSm-4 glass has the highest radiation protection efficiency among the BZnAlBiSm glasses. The transmission factors increase as photon energy range enhances from 0.015 to 15 MeV and thickness declines from 2.5 to 0.5 cm. The energy buildup factors and energy absorption buildup factors of BZnAlBiSm glasses reduce from 15 to 1 mfp. Variation of the effective atomic number and effective electron density as a function of photon energy for BZnAlBiSm glasses are similar. The projected ranges of electron, proton, alpha and carbon for the BZnAlBiSm glasses increase as photon energy enlarges. The fast neutron removal cross sections of the BZnAlBiSm glasses vary in order of BZnAlBiSm-4<BZnAlBiSm-3<BZnAlBiSm-2<BZnAlBiSm-1. Thus, it can be concluded that BZnAlBiSm-1 has the highest neutron absorption ability among the BZnAlBiSm glasses.

AbstractNuclear radiation shielding capabilities for a glass series 20Bi2O3 − xPbO − (80 − 2x)B2O3 − xGeO2 (where x = 5, 10, 20, and 30 mol%) have been investigated using the Phy-X/PSD software and Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code. The mass attenuation coefficients (μm) of selected samples have been estimated through XCOM dependent Phy-X/PSD program and MCNP-5 code in the photon-energy range 0.015–15 MeV. So obtained μm values are used to calculate other γ-ray shielding parameters such as half-value layer (HVL), mean-free-path (MFP), etc. The calculated μm values were found to be 71.20 cm2/g, 76.03 cm2/g, 84.24 cm2/g, and 90.94 cm2/g for four glasses S1 to S4, respectively. The effective atomic number (Zeff)values vary between 69.87 and 17.11 for S1 or 75.66 and 29.11 for S4 over 0.05–15 MeV of photon-energy. Sample S4, which has a larger PbO/GeO2 of 30 mol% in the bismuth-borate glass, possesses the lowest MFP and HVL, providing higher radiation protection efficiency compared to all other combinations. It shows outperformance while compared the calculated parameters (HVL and MFP) with the commercial shielding glasses, different alloys, polymers, standard shielding concretes, and ceramics. Geometric Progression (G-P) was applied for evaluating the energy absorption and exposure buildup factors at energies 0.015–15 MeV with penetration depths up to 40 mfp. The buildup factors showed dependence on the MFP and photon-energy as well. The studied samples' neutron shielding behavior was also evaluated by calculating the fast neutron removal cross-section (ΣR), i.e. found to be 0.139 cm−1 for S1, 0.133 cm−1 for S2, 0.128 cm−1 for S3, and 0.12 cm−1 for S4. The results reveal a great potential for using a glass composite sample S4 in radiation protection applications.

The mass attenuation coefficients, μ/ρ, half-value layer, HVL, tenth-value layer, TVL, effective atomic numbers, ZPIeff, and effective electron densities, Ne,eff, of borate glass sample systems of (100-x-y) Na2B4O7 : xPbO : yNiO (where x and y=0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weight percentage) containing PbO and NiO, with potential gamma ray and neutron shielding applications, have been investigated. The gamma ray interaction parameters, μ/ρ, HVL, TVL, ZPIeff, and Ne,eff, were computed for photon energy range 1 keV–100 GeV. The macroscopic fast neutron removal cross-sections (ΣR) have also been calculated. Appreciable variations were noted for all the interaction parameters by varying the photon energy and the chemical composition of the glass samples. The better shielding properties of borate glass samples containing PbO were found. These results indicated that borate glass samples are a good radiation shielding material.

The radiation parameters of barite sodium silicoborate glass (BaSO4:Na2O:SiO2:B2O3) with different concentration of barite (BaSO4) were studied. The mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ), effective atomic number (Zeff) effective electron densities (Ne,eff) and half value layer (HVL) have been calculated by theoretical approach using WinXCom program in the energy range of 1 keV to 100 GeV. The results of these parameters are show graphically for total and partial photon interaction. It was found that the Zeff show discontinuous jumps related to absorption edges and dominance photoelectric effect at low energies, pair production have two types which are nuclear and electron field and its slightly increased with increasing photon energies. The variation of Ne,eff was related to the value of Zeff. The half value layer (HVL) of glasses were compared with commercial window and some standard shielding concretes which observed that the value of 20 mol% BaSO4 has lower than commercial window, ordinary and hematite-serpentine concretes. These results showed that glass sample is promising radiation shielding materials.

Abstract This work presents a detailed study on the effects of reducing PbO content on the elastic and radiation shielding properties of germanate glasses described by the chemical formula 50GeO2-(50-x)PbO-xZnO, where x between 0 and 50 mol % with step of 10. A theoretical analysis based on Makishima-Mackenzie's theory (MM-theory) was employed to obtain the elastic moduli of the studied glass specimens. Moreover, the Monte Carlo simulations were applied via Geant4 platform to assess the radiation shielding ability of the GeO2-PbO-ZnO glass system by evaluating several fundamental properties such as gamma and neutron transmission factors, total cross sections, effective atomic numbers, 1/e penetration depths, and exposure buildup factors. We found that the bulk elastic modulus increased from 50.751 GPa to 85.389 GPa as the PbO content increased from 50 mol % to 0. The results of the linear attenuation coefficient show that the cross sections of (σ)PE, (σ)CE, and (σ)pp dominates the photon attenuation at 0.15 ≤ E ≤ 0.08; 0.8 < E < 8, and 8 < E < 15 MeV respectively. Moreover, the present glasses have superior photon absorbing capacity compared to ordinary and barite concrete; RS-253-G18 and RS-360 commercial glass shields. This suggests that the GeO2-PbO-ZnO glass system can be used as a non-toxic shielding material in the nuclear facilities.

The gamma radiation shielding ability for CaO-K2O-Na2O-P2O5 glasses were experimentally determined between 0.0595 and 1.41 MeV. The experimental MAC results were compared with theoretical results obtained from the XCOM software to test the accuracy of the experimental values. Additionally, the effect of increasing the P2O5 in the glass composition, or reducing the Na2O content, was evaluated at varying energies. For the fabricated glasses, the experimental data strongly agreed with the XCOM results. The effective atomic number (Zeff) of the fabricated glasses was also determined. The Zeff values start out at their maximum (12.41–12.55) at the lowest tested energy, 0.0595 MeV, and decrease to 10.69–10.80 at 0.245 MeV. As energy further increases, the Zeff values remain almost constant between 0.344 and 1.41 MeV. The mean free path (MFP) of the fabricated glasses is investigated and we found that the lowest MFP value occurs at the lowest tested energy, 0.0595 MeV, and lies within the range of 1.382–1.486 cm, while the greatest MFP can be found at the highest tested energy, 1.41 MeV, within the range of 8.121–8.656 cm. At all energies, the KCNP40 sample has the lowest MFP, while the KCNP60 sample has the greatest. The half value layer (HVL) for the KCNP-X glasses is determined. For all the selected energies, the HVL values follow the order of KCNP40 < KCNP45 < KCNP50 < KCNP55 < KCNP60. The HVL of the KCNP50 sample increased from 0.996 to 2.663, 3.392, 4.351, and 5.169 cm for energies of 0.0595, 0.245, 0.444, 0.779, and 1.11 MeV, respectively. The radiation protection efficiency (RPE) results reveal that decreasing the P2O5 content in the glasses improves the radiation shielding ability of the samples. Thus, the KCNP40 sample has the best potential for photon attenuation applications.

The paper presents a new composite material for radiation protection based on extra-heavy concrete reinforced by basalt fiber. Basalt fiber is a new material for concrete reinforcement, which provides improved mechanical characteristics of concrete, reduces the level of microcracks and increases the durability of concrete. Within the scope of present work, the gamma-ray radiation protection properties of concrete reinforced with basalt fiber was modeled. Two types of extra-heavy concrete were used for this paper. The main gamma-ray attenuation coefficients such as mean atomic number, mean atomic mass, mean electron density, effective atomic number, effective electron density, Murty effective atomic number were analyzed with help of WinXCom software. It has been shown that the addition of basalt fiber to concrete does not impair its gamma-ray radiation shielding properties. With increasing the basalt fiber dosage in concrete, the radiation properties against gamma radiation are improved. This research was carried out with the financial support of the IAEA, within the terms and conditions of the Research Contract 20638 in the framework of the Coordinated Research Project (CRP) “Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS) Applications and use of Low-Enriched Uranium in ADS (T33002)” within the project “The Two-Zone Subcritical Systems with Fast and Thermal Neutron Spectra for Transmutation of Minor Actinides and Long-Lived Fission Products”.

The total mass attenuation coefficient, partial photon interaction and effective atomic number of commercial window added with BaSO4in have been investigated at photon energy from 1 keV to 100 GeV on the basis of calculation. The theoretical values of total and partial interaction were obtained by the WinXCom software. The variations of mass attenuation coefficient and effective atomic number with photon energy are shown graphically. The results show that the variation of mass attenuation coefficient and effective atomic number has changed with photon energy and composition of window. It has been found that these parameters increase with increasing BaSO4concentrations, due to the increasing photoelectric absorption in glass samples. These results showed that the BaSO4can improve radiation shielding properties in commercial glass and useful for radiation shielding material design.
