It is expected that the demand for Metal Matrix Composite (MMCs) will increase in these applications in the aerospace and automotive industries sectors, strengthened AMC has different advantages over monolithic aluminium alloy as it has characteristics between matrix metal and reinforcement particles.  However, adequate joining technique, which is important for structural materials, has not been established for (MMCs) yet. Conventional fusion welding is difficult because of the irregular redistribution or reinforcement particles.  Also, the reaction between reinforcement particles and aluminium matrix as weld defects such as porosity in the fusion zone make fusion welding more difficult. The aim of this work was to show friction stir welding (FSW) feasibility for entering Al 6061/5 to Al 6061/18 wt. % SiCp composites has been produced by using stir casting technique. SiCp is added as reinforcement in to Aluminium alloy (Al 6061) for preparing metal matrix composite. This method is less expensive and very effective. Different rotational speeds,1000 and 1800 rpm and traverse speed 10 mm \ min was examined. Specimen composite plates having thick 10 mm were FS welded successfully. A high-speed steel (HSS) cylindrical instrument with conical pin form was used for FSW. The outcome revealed that the ultimate tensile strength of the welded joint (Al 6061/18 wt. %) was 195 MPa at rotation speed 1800 rpm, the outcome revealed that the ultimate tensile strength of the welded joint (Al 6061/18 wt.%) was 165 MPa at rotation speed 1000 rpm, that was very near to the composite matrix as-cast strength. The research of microstructure showed the reason for increased joint strength and microhardness. The microstructural study showed the reason (4 %) for higher joint strength and microhardness.  due to Significant   of SiCp close to the boundary of the dynamically recrystallized and thermo mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) was observed through rotation speed 1800 rpm. The friction stir welded ultimate tensile strength Decreases as the volume fraction increases of SiCp (18 wt.%).

In this study, mechanical properties of friction stir welded Aluminum Alloy (AA) 6061 in three different heat treatment conditions i.e. Annealed (O), Artificially aged (T6) and Post Weld Heat Treated (PWHT) were compared. Plates were welded in a butt joint form. Parameters were optimized and joints were fabricated using tool rotational speed and travel speed of 500 rpm and 350 mm/min respectively. Two sets of plates were welded in O condition and out of which one was, later, subjected to post weld artificial aging treatment. Third set was welded in T6 condition. The welds were characterized by macro and microstructure analysis, microhardness measurement and mechanical testing. SEM fractography of the tensile fracture surfaces was also performed. Comparatively better mechanical properties were achieved in the plate with PWHT condition.

The effect of five different stirring times of friction stir spot welding on lap-shear specimens of Al 6061-T6 alloy has been experimentally analyzed. The welding condition with 2 s of stirring shows the optimum mechanical behavior in comparison to the others. The static strength and fatigue behavior of the joint are justified using the microhardness profiles. The static results prove that the increase of stirring time beyond the 2 s case has little effect on improving the static strength. The fatigue results reveal two different failure modes, which are shear fracture at high load levels and transverse crack growth at low load levels. At medium load levels, although the final failure is similar to high load levels, the transverse growth of the crack outside the welding zone, just like low load levels, is also observed.

The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of friction stir welding (FSW) parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties of Sc-modified AA2519 extrusion joints. The workpiece was welded by FSW in non-heat-treated condition with seven different sets of welding parameters. For each obtained joint macrostructure and microstructure observations were performed. Mechanical properties of joints were investigated using tensile test together with localization of fracture location. Joint efficiencies were established by comparing measured joints tensile strength to the value for base material. The obtained results show that investigated FSW joints of Sc-modified AA2519 in the non-heat-treated condition have joint efficiency within the range 87–95%. In the joints obtained with the lowest ratio of the tool rotation speed to the tool traverse speed, the occurrence of imperfections (voids) localized in the stir zone was reported. Three selected samples were subjected to further investigations consisting microhardness distribution and scanning electron microscopy fractography analysis. As the result of dynamic recrystallization, the microhardness of the base material value of 86 HV0.1 increased to about 110–125 HV0.1 in the stir zone depending on the used welding parameters. Due to lack of the strengthening phase and low strain hardening of used alloy the lack of a significantly softened zone was reported by both microhardness analysis and investigation of the fractured samples.

Abstract A hybrid additive manufacturing (AM) and friction stir processing (FSP) was used to heal a crack in 6 mm thick Al 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. AL-6061 is usually used in H2 high-pressure vessel fabrication as well as aerospace applications. In this work, Al-Si powder was utilized to fill the crack, then FSP was applied to consolidate and stir the powder with the base metal to fill and close the crack zone. Effect of FSP parameters including welding speed and tool rotation speed on the quality of repair was studied. Various mechanical tests, as well as characterization techniques such as hardness test, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), were employed to study the newly developed hybrid process on the quality of the repair. The investigation revealed that low rotational speed of 800 rpm results in minimum variation in microhardness. Moreover, the impact of welding speed on microhardness is smaller as compared to rotational speed.
