Since taking off as an industry in Sweden in the 1980s, contract archaeology has changed not only the role of field archaeologists but also that of museums and the formation of collections. This paper discusses some of the effects of the commercialization of archaeological services through a case study of past and present collection practices. Data records are compared from three different archaeological investigations at the site Nya Lödöse (1473-1621) in Gothenburg. Each excavation represents a particular era in archaeological practice. The data are used to compare and analyse collecting practices within contemporary contract archaeology. Separately, a survey among contract archaeology units examines the implementation of legislative guidelines and day-to-day practices and suggests several causes for anomalies in the selection and discarding of finds in the case study. Combined, the findings of the case study and the survey results, suggest that contract archaeology leaves a specific imprint on collections in archaeological museums, impacting their compilation, and therefore influencing future research as well as the experience of the public.

Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the important role of liberal-communitarian debate in cultural heritage law and politics. Derek Gillman in the book titled “The Idea of Cultural Heritage” stressed that “During recent decades, two parallel debates have occurred with respect to public policy and heritage”, and mentioned above is the second one, which “takes place between political philosophers, especially liberal and communitarian thinkers of various shades.” The following study brings attention to the external perspective. That is, these philosophical concepts which appeared beyond legal sciences, but they have the impact on both law and almost all aspects of social life. Liberalism and communitarianism, despite their differences, are particularly useful lens through which to consider law and its functions within contemporary society. Therefore, this begs the question as to what is their approach to the cultural heritage law and practice. While much has been written about liberalism and communitarianism, their impact on cultural heritage still remains shrouded in mystery. We do accept and stress that cultural heritage law is nowadays recognised as the multilevel legal instruments for safeguarding, protection, preservation and maintenance of cultural heritage, cultural property, or even cultural rights. It is not only “multilevel”, but also “multivalued”, and for that reason many theoretical and practical problems are noticed. Liberalism versus communitarianism is one of the most significant debate. As a result, the main aim of this article is to outline the influence of liberalism and communitarianism on cultural heritage law.

Chapter 7 provides a critical overview of landscape protection in EU law. It begins by briefly outlining the impact of EU agricultural policy on European landscapes. It then moves on to ascertain the extent to which the cultural heritage dimension to landscape protection is considered within EU policy, before analysing EU environmental law, particularly environmental impact assessment directives, which include consideration of cultural heritage and the landscape. While the ELC provides for public participation, EU law requires member states to legislate not only for public participation but also for access to justice and broader standing requirements in environmental matters. The implications of this for landscape protection are explored, and some concluding observations are drawn on the role of the EU in landscape governance more broadly.

The case of Ru, one of the traditional Korean building types, is introduced as a representative example; how its concept has been defined, changed, and forgotten in Korean culture. The importance of having a correct understanding of how cognition is composed of different types of experiences of cultural heritage is further explained. In this context, the importance of semantic mode and pictorial mode classified by Husserl is argued as the most powerful medium in human cognition based on phenomenological analysis. In this respect, the important role of Virtual Reality (VR) was highlighted. Considering the pace of recent technology and researches, breaking the barrier between experiencing the physical object and the VR may be a matter of time. Phenomenological classification of cultural heritage, which was designed for explaining all the types of cultural heritage, is introduced. The importance of developing a valid VR model and its role in cultural studies is emphasized via the phenomenological classification of cultural heritage.
