Šiame straipsnyje tiriamos vaikinų ir merginų ateities orientacijos, kurias sudaro ateities tikslai, baimės ir strategijos. Tyrime dalyvavo 298 paaugliai nuo 14-17 metų. Tyrimo rezultatai atskleidė tam tikrus lyčių ateities orientacijų ypatumus. Mūsų tyrimo rezultatai rodo, kad Lietuvos merginų ir vaikinų ateities orientacijos iš dalies atitinka tradicinius lyties vaidmeniui keliamus reikalavimus, tačiau merginos yra labiau orientuotos į išsilavinimą (dažniau kelia ateities tikslus, susijusius su išsilavinimu) negu vaikinai. Vaikinai dažniau negu merginos mini ateities tikslus, susijusius su nuosavybe ir turtu, negu merginos. Merginoms būdinga didesnė orientacija į tarpasmeninius santykius negu vaikinams, jos dažniau mini ateities baimes, susijusias su vedybomis ir šeima, santykiais su draugais ir ryšiais su tėvais ir kitais šeimos nariais. Taip pat merginos dažniau mini ateities baimes, susijusias su išsilavinimu ir "kitais" dalykais negu vaikinai. Merginos labiau taiko funkcionalias kognityvines strategijas pasiekimo srityje ir socialinėje srityje negu vaikinai, išskyrus pesimizmą socialinėje srityje, kuris yra būdingesnis merginoms negu vaikinams. ADOLESCENT‘S FUTURE ORIENTATIONS: GENDER DIFFERENCESJolanta Sondaitė Summary This study examines gender differences in future goals, hopes, fears and strategies. The subjecs are 298 adolescents of the age 14-17. Methods used are Future Hopes and Fears Questionnaire and the Strategy and Attribution Questionnaire. The results showed significant differences between boys and girls future hopes and especially fears. The girls more often than boys included education in their hopes for the future. The boys more frequently than girls included property-related issues in their hopes for the future. The results further showed that girls mentioned more frequently concerns and feares related to education, marriage/family, friends, relationship to parents and other things compared to boys. The girls apply more often than boys seeking social support, reflective thinking, master orientation in an achievement situation and success expectation, master-orientation and pessimism in an affiliative context.

Zusammenfassung Frauen leisten nach wie vor mehr private Sorgearbeit als Männer, obwohl ihre Erwerbsbeteiligung in den letzten Jahren deutlich gestiegen ist. In diesem Beitrag untersuchen wir auf Basis des Deutschen Alterssurveys 1996 bis 2017 im Längsschnitt, ob das stärkere Engagement von Frauen in der Übernahme unbezahlter Unterstützung und Pflege für gesundheitlich eingeschränkte Angehörige darauf zurückgeht, dass sie im Vergleich zu Männern nach wie vor seltener, mit geringerem Stundenumfang sowie geringerer beruflicher Qualifikation am Arbeitsmarkt beteiligt sind. Diese Hypothese wird nicht bestätigt, denn bestehende Geschlechterunterschiede in Pflege und Unterstützung können allenfalls partiell durch die geschlechtsspezifische Arbeitsmarktbeteiligung aufgeklärt werden. Abstract: Does Women’s Lower Labor Force Participation Explain their Higher Engagement in Private Care Work? A Contribution to the Debate about Gender Equality Women do still provide more private care work than men, although their participation in employment has increased in the last decades. Using longitudinal data of the German Ageing Survey 1996 to 2017, in this paper, we study, whether women’s greater engagement in unpaid social support and care giving can be attributed to the fact that women compared to men are still less economically active and have a lower occupational qualification. This hypothesis, however, cannot be confirmed, as the gender differences in the private unpaid care work can be explained by gender differences in the labor force participation only to a small amount.

BackgroundThere is little investigation on the interaction effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and social support on non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), suicidal ideation and suicide attempt in community adolescent populations, or gender differences in these effects.AimsTo examine the individual and interaction effects of ACEs and social support on NSSI, suicidal ideation and suicide attempt in adolescents, and explore gender differences.MethodA school-based health survey was conducted in three provinces in China between 2013–2014. A total of 14 820 students aged 10–20 years completed standard questionnaires, to record details of ACEs, social support, NSSI, suicidal ideation and suicide attempt.ResultsOf included participants, 89.4% reported one or more category of ACEs. The 12-month prevalence of NSSI, suicidal ideation and suicide attempt was 26.1%, 17.5% and 4.4%, respectively; all were significantly associated with increased ACEs and lower social support. The multiple adjusted odds ratio of NSSI in low versus high social support was 2.27 (95% CI 1.85–2.67) for girls and 1.81 (95% CI 1.53–2.14) for boys, and their ratio (Ratio of two odds ratios, ROR) was 1.25 (P = 0.037). Girls with high ACEs scores (5–6) and moderate or low social support also had a higher risk of suicide attempt than boys (RORs: 2.34, 1.84 and 2.02, respectively; all P < 0.05).ConclusionsACEs and low social support are associated with increased risk of NSSI and suicidality in Chinese adolescents. Strategies to improve social support, particularly among female adolescents with a high number of ACEs, should be an integral component of targeted mental health interventions.Declaration of interestNone.

Teenage years determines success in the future. Good teenagers are who are responsible to their own success in the future, known as future orientation. Given how important future orientation is, researchers examined variables which affect future orientation, thus future orientation can be optimalized. Dimensions of social support and self-efficacy chosen as independent variables. Respondents of this study were 326 students of one of high school in Jakarta. Future orientation, measured using Orientation Test–Revised developed by Scheir, Carver, and Bridges (1994). Social Support, measured using The Social Provisions Scale developed by Cutrona and Russel (1987). Self-efficacy, measured using General Self-efficacy Scale developed by Bosscher and Smit (1998). Instruments' validity were tested using Confirmatory Factor Analysis and data was analysed using Multiple Regression Analysis. α=0.05, result of this study shows future orientation was affected by dimensions of social support, self-efficacy, and interaction between reassurance and self-efficacy with R-square = 30.3%.

Abstract Background The aim of the present study was to examine to what extent observed gender differences in mental health are associated with the protective factors social support, sense of coherence and participation in regular physical activity and more generally, engagement in organized or unorganized activity with other people. Methods This study was based upon a cross-sectional regional health survey in Norway, conducted during the winter of 2015–2016, in three southern counties; Aust-Agder, Vest-Agder and Vestfold. The study focused on young adults, comparing three age groups; 18–24 years old (n = 624), 25–31 (n = 582), and 32–38 years old (n = 795). Results Sense of coherence was strongly associated with low mental distress in all age groups and for both genders, while the association between low social support and mental distress was significant for young women only. Regular physical activity was not positively associated with low mental distress when sense of coherence and social support were included in the analysis. Conclusion Social support appears to have a stronger role as a protective factor for mental distress among young women, compared to young men and older persons. This has implications for health promoting activities that target young women. Sense of coherence showed a strong association with low mental distress scores for all ages studied.

Much research has identified the difficulties of promoting women’s empowerment using microcredit, but there has been little research on the potential for empowerment from promoting women’s savings. We address this gap through a qualitative study of three women’s savings programmes in the Highlands of Peru. The results reveal changes in several domains of women’s lives (economic, personal and relational), emphasizing that these programmes enable them to think about the future, expand their social support networks, and become entrepreneurs. We conclude that savings interventions have considerable advantage over microcredit programmes for facilitating female empowerment and that the merits of these interventions go far beyond financial inclusion with significant impacts on women’s psychosocial well-being and broader empowerment.

This chapter reflects on the lessons to be derived from the advocacy campaigns in Pakistan, Argentina, and Ireland discussed in earlier chapters. Insights drawn from those campaigns are used to refine the experimentalist account of human rights advanced in Chapter 2, particularly as regards the importance of social movements and of building broad social support for human rights campaigns. The remainder of the chapter describes five major challenges of the current era—illiberalism, climate change, digitalization, pandemics, and inequality—and considers the difficulties they pose for the experimentalist account of human rights advocacy. It argues that the experimentalist practice of human rights advocacy is reasonably resilient and adaptive, and that internal contestation from within the human rights movement as well as external critiques have already helped to catalyze reform and to push activists and advocates to think more innovatively about the changes needed to strengthen the ability of the movement to engage with these major challenges in the future. It concludes that in a turbulent era, rather than abandon human rights, we should redouble our efforts to bolster, renew, and reinvigorate a movement that has galvanized constituencies and communities around the globe to mobilize for a better world.
