The present contribution is a comprehensive review of the status of biodiversity of freshwater zooplankton of Uttarakhand Himalaya. Uttarakhand harbours a wide diversity in freshwater habitats in terms of rapids, riffles, runs, cascades of falls and pools of rivers and streams and the shallow and swift water of springs and lentic waters of lakes, ponds and reservoirs with varied physico-chemical environmental variables. Freshwater zooplankton of Uttarakhand are composed of the taxa of Protozoa, Rotifera, Copepoda, Cladocera and Ostrocoda. Ritifera contributes maximum (40.50%) with thirty two species followed by Protozoa (22.78%) with eighteen species and Cladocera (22.78%) with eighteen species to the total zooplankton taxa of Uttarakhand. Copepoda contributes 8.86% with seven species, while minimum contribution (5.08%) with only four species is made by Ostracoda to the total zooplankton taxa of Uttarakhand. Seasonal variation in the abundance of zooplankton in addition to diurnal vertical migration in diverse freshwater habitats of Uttarakhand Himalayahas also been reported.

This volume provides the first detailed account of the Chroococcales of north-eastern Australia. It provides keys, morphological and ecological data for 6 families, 33 genera and 112 species, and photomicrographs and original illustrations to enable the identification of natural populations based on stable and recognizable characters observable with the aid of light microscopy. Distributional data are based on extensive surveys at 270 sites representing the major freshwater habitats including rivers and streams, palustrine and lacustrine wetlands, thermal springs, and man-made reservoirs in Queensland and the Northern Territory as well as a review of the Australian phycological literature.

O objetivo do presente trabalho é avaliar as características físico-químicas e microbiológicas dos reservatórios da região do semiárido brasileiro, receptores de água do Projeto de Integração do rio São Francisco, identificando a influência de variáveis ambientais na comunidade fitoplanctônica. Foram estudados os reservatórios de Itaparica, Poço da Cruz, Boqueirão, Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves e Castanhão. Para alcançar o objetivo proposto, foram feitas análises estatísticas multivariadas com auxílio dos programas Primer e SPSS. Verificou-se que os reservatórios se diferenciam em dois grupos (Eixo Leste e Eixo Norte), observando-se a existência de uma variação temporal. As variáveis ambientais explicaram 78% da variação do fitoplâncton. Destes 22% são explicados por variáveis tipológicas (naturais) e 56% são explicados por variáveis de pressão (efeito antropogênico). Espera-se que a transferência de água possa contribuir para melhoria da qualidade da água, sendo fundamental a implementação de medidas que promovam uma gestão integrada e sustentável das respectivas bacias hidrográficas. Palavras-chave: variáveis ambientais, fitoplâncton, reservatórios, semiárido The Influence of Environmental Variables on Phytoplankton Community of the Receptors Reservoirs by the São Francisco River Integration Project ABSTRACT This study aims to evaluate the physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of brazilian northeast reservoirs, from the São Francisco river Integration Project, to identify the influence of environmental variables on the phytoplankton community. There were studied the reservoirs of Itaparica, Poço da Cruz, Boqueirão, Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves and Castanhão. To achieve the proposed aim, multivariate statistical analyses were performed with the Primer and SPSS programs. It was observed that the reservoirs are distinguish in two groups (East and North Axis), observing the existence of a temporal variation. It was verified that the environmental variables explained 78% of the phytoplankton variation. Of these, 22% are explained by typological variables and 56% are explained by pressure variable. It is expected that the transfer of water may improve water quality (especially in reservoirs of the East Axis). The paper assesses the status of the soil cover associated with the pollution of its waste chemical production and consumption. The authors present the data of formaldehyde and toluene influence on the abundance of actinomycetes, heterotrophic bacteria and fungi, as these groups of microorganisms provide self-purification capacity of the soil and participate in soil formation processes. In this paper microbiological and physico-chemical methods of research are used. The study of species composition changes of some soil microorganisms groups of leached chernozem under the influence of formaldehyde and toluene showed that this factor causes changes in the complex of soil microorganisms. This factor is reflected in the decreased species richness and diversity and increase of pollution-tolerant microorganisms. These studies investigate a number of microorganisms that provide self-purification capacity of the soil and participate in soil formation. The results show the nature of the influence of different doses of formaldehyde and toluene on the structure and functioning of the complex of soil microorganisms, as well as reveal the mechanism of action of chemicals (formaldehyde and toluene) on soil microbiota associated with its resistance and the manifestation of toxicity of the soil.

An environmental database has been created, recording water bodies at a national level and assembling relevant data collected by various public services and institutions in charge of water resources management and research in Greece. Data consists of physico-chemical parameters, geomorphological descriptions, inventories of fauna and flora species, environmental pressures, vulnerability evaluation and other information useful for the assessment of current and future ecological status. Data gathering has proven to be a challenging task, due to the large number and the generally small size of the surface freshwater bodies as well as the numerous competent services and institutions and the multiple and sometimes conflicting responsibilities that therefore result. The latter is also partly the cause of lack of continuity of data, gaps or sometimes questionable reliability. Performing a global data overview, we note that (a) ecological status can be characterized as good for the majority of the sites, especially for small mountain streams, and (b) the general trend in most cases is degradation of current conditions, related either to anthropogenic pressures or to human activity combined with natural factors. This database, in a more completed and enriched form, could assist in the implementation of 2000/60/EC Directive in Greece and the establishment of reference conditions of surface freshwater systems.

In this work, the Chrysomelinae leaf beetle subgenus Calligrapha s. str. Chevrolat, 1836 is revised, offering redescriptions and keys for identification of twelve species currently considered in this group, allied to the South American species Calligrapha polyspila (Germar, 1821), the generic type of Calligrapha. The current species count results from important taxonomic changes. These include reversing a long-held synonymy, resurrecting the name Calligrapha mexicana Stål, 1859 stat. rev. for a species that is different from Chrysomela serpentina Rogers, 1856; upgrading the status of Polyspila serpentina var. discrepans Achard, 1923 to Calligrapha discrepans (Achard) stat. rev.; and formally proposing a number of new synonymies for several species, including: (1) Calligrapha discrepans (Achard) (= Calligrapha serpentina ssp. temaxensis Bechyné, 1952 syn. nov.); (2) Calligrapha fulvipes (Gistel, 1848) (= Calligrapha bajula Stål, 1860 syn. nov.; = Calligrapha nupta Stål, 1859 syn. nov.; = C. sponsa Stål, 1859 syn. nov.); and (3) Calligrapha polyspila (Germar) (= Polyspila polyspila var. bilineolata Achard, 1923 syn. nov.; = Polyspila polyspila var. plagata Achard, 1923 syn. nov.).

Zooplankton constitute important food item of many omnivorous and carnivorous fishes. The study was conducted with an aim to study the zooplankton production including physico-chemical parameters with an emphasis to the existing management practices taken by the operators. The study was carried out in a culture and a non-culture pond of Rajshahi University campus was carried out from September, 2004 to February, 2005. Monthly fluctuations of some physico-chemical parameters were noted. The ponds showed alkaline in nature with moderate bicarbonate alkalinity. Diurnal change of water temperature, free CO2 and dissolved Oxygen were also studied. Four groups of zooplankton were identified, of which copepods (1260 units/l and 973.33 units/l in pond-1 and pond-2 respectively) were most dominant. A total of 9 genera of zooplankton were identified of which Cyclops (68.25% and 60.28% of total copepods) was most abundant in both ponds. Total zooplankton showed positive correlation with pH, carbonate alkalinity (CO3) and bicarbonate alkalinity (HCO3) in both ponds and DO, carbon dioxide (CO2) in pond-1. Present findings indicated that the culture pond showed better result than that of the non-culture pond regarding zooplankton production. Composition and abundance of zooplankton in a polyculture pond was studied during June 2003 to May 2004. A total of 33 major species of zooplankton including 11genera of Rotifera, 4 of Copepoda, 4 genera of Cladocera and 2 genera of Protozoa were identified. The monthly abundance of zooplankton varied form 4228 indiv/l in October 2003 to169 indiv/l in January 2004. Among the total zooplankton, Rotifera comprised of 71.07%, Copepoda comprised of 12.49% Nauplii comprised of 11.96%, Cladocera comprised of 1.49% and Protozoa comprised of 2.99%. Water temperature (r = 0.18), free CO2 (r = 0.40), TDS (r = 0.14) and water depth (r = 0.55) showed positive correlation with zooplankton but air temperature, pH, dissolved O2, total hardness and ammonia showed negative correlation (the coefficients being -0.18, -0.05, -0.25, -0.38 and -0.11 respectively) with the occurrence of zooplankton. The average growth of fishes and zooplankton showed positive correlation in all cases but the relations were insignificant when tested statistically.Bangladesh J. Zool. 42(1): 67-76, 2014

The systematics of South American Xenodontinae snakes has experienced large changes and improvements as a result of recent studies employing molecular data. Herein we assess the status of the rare Peruvian snake species, Erythrolamprus problematicus (Dipsadidae, Xenodontinae, Xenodontini), previously known from a single specimen collected in 1950. Based on new morphological and molecular data from a second specimen that we collected, we confirmed the presence of a crease in the rostral scale, mentioned in the original description (a unique trait among the Xenodontini), and recovered E. problematicus as the sister-taxon of all other Xenodontini, instead of nested among the current Erythrolamprus. Therefore, our phylogenetic results justify the erection of a new genus to accommodate the species.
