Purpose. To study the peculiarities of relationships between the aquatic environment and the extruded feed residues in the circulating aquaculture systems intended for growing Clarias gariepinus, and changes in the concentrations of inorganic nitrogen compounds and phosphorus phosphates. Methodology. The object of study is the quality of the aquatic environment when modeling the food load in accordance with feeding standards of different age groups of Cl. gariepinus. Water quality in experimental tanks was determined by analytical methods. Findings. It was found that the intake of extruded feed residues into the aquatic environment leads to a deterioration in its quality due to an increase in the concentration of compounds of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus of phosphates, which negatively affects the vital activity of Cl. gariepinus. Nitrification processes are activated under conditions of sufficient dissolved oxygen content in the environment. The overload of the aquatic environment with organic matter promotes the bacterial transformation processes of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, which are characterized by the predominance of the ammonification process and the suppression of oxidative processes. Upon completion of the mineralization of the excess organic matter, the appearance of a sufficient amount of dissolved oxygen activates ammonium oxidation and intensifies nitrification process. The leading factors in the ammonification and nitrification processes in an environment saturated with organic matter include the dissolved oxygen content, which regulates the activity ratio of anaerobic amonifying and aerobic nitrifying microflora. Optimum aeration in Cl. gariepinus cultivation systems is determined not only by the direct physiological needs of fish, but also by the need to maintain a sufficient content of dissolved oxygen to ensure nitrification processes. Originality. The study investigated the effect of the food load on the quality of aquatic environment in the circulating aquaculture systems for Cl. gariepinus rearing. Practical value. The study results can be used to optimize Cl. gariepinus growing methods in circulating aquaculture systems with adjustable parameters at high stocking densities. The content of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, chloride, organic matter, and dissolved oxygen was studied in 11 ponds of the “Oleksandriya” Dendrological Park. Samples were taken in summer 2016–2018 in the cascade of ponds located in the Western, Middle, and Eastern ravines of the park. The obtained data suggest that the studied ponds are significantly polluted by inorganic and organic substances, the amount of which remains still very high. The ponds of the Western ravine are characterized by the highest content of inorganic nitrogen compounds and chloride.Thus, in particular, the concentration of ammonium in the Poterchata pond accounted for 103.00–160.00 mg N/L, in the Rusalka pond – 64.00–89.50 mg N/L, in the Vodyanyk pond – 28.00–43.00 mg N/L, whereas in the Skelny pond – 12.00–38.50 mg N/L. The concentration of nitrite in the studied ponds accounted for respectively 1.130–2.213 mg N/L, 1.538–1.950 mg N/L, 0.988–1.388 mg N/L, and 0.730–1.288 mg N/L. The concentration of nitrate was also rather high. Thus, in the Poterchata pond it was 52.00–81.25 mg N/L, in the Rusalka pond – 48.00–73.75 mg N/L, in the Vodyayk pond – 21.50–38.75 mg N/L, whereas in the Skelny pond – 14.50–27.50 mg N/L. The concentration of chloride in the studied ponds accounted for respectively 690.9–795.7 mg/L, 553.8–580.5 mg/L, 283.5–308.4 mg/L, and 274.5–287.1 mg/L. The highest concentration of inorganic phosphorus (0.470 mg/L) was observed in one of the ponds of the Middle ravine. The highest values of dichromate oxidizablity (97.0 and 81.0 mg O/L) were registered in the first two ponds of the Western ravine, which is indicative of their essential contamination by organic matter. The lowest concentration of the dissolved oxygen (3.8 mg/L) was observed in the ponds of the Middle ravine. The complex of measurements aimed at the improvement of the state of the ponds of the “Oleksandriya” Dendrological Park should be elaborated and realized. In particular, it is essential to reveal the main source of the pollution of the ponds of the Western ravine by inorganic nitrogen compounds and chloride, and also to keep them clear of pollutants.

The main environmental problems associated with fish farming in Denmark are attributable to the dam, the “dead reach” and nutrient and organic matter discharge. The environmental regulation of fish farming in Denmark started with the Environmental Protection Act of 1974, the Statutory Order of 1985 forbidding wet feed, and the Action Plan on the Aquatic Environment of 1987. In the case of freshwater fish farms, the latter was implemented through the measures stipulated in the 1989 Statutory Order on Fish Farms. The impact of Danish legislative measures to reduce and regulate the environmental effects of freshwater fish farms can be summarized as follows: - the number of fish farms has been reduced from about 800 in 1974 to about 500 at present; - production has tripled since 1974 and has been stable since 1989; - a change from wet to dry feed has reduced the environmental impact of the farms; - the national goals of the Action Plan on the Aquatic Environment of 1987 for reducing fish farm discharges of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus have been fulfilled. The main remaining problems are that: - the local impact of fish farms on downstream stream quality is still much too high in about 15% of cases; - the problem of the passage of migrating invertebrates and fish is still unsolved at some farms; - the problems posed by “dead reaches” are still unsolved. It is concluded that sustainable fish farming is possible in Denmark, but with the present technology production will have to be significantly reduced.

Abstract This study was conducted to assess the effect of water quality of the Ogun River on the haematological indices of the African catfish Clarias gariepinus. Samples of water and Clarias gariepinus were collected from Ogun River (Station I, Opeji and Station II, Lafenwa) to determine and compare effects of possible differences in water quality on haematological parameters of Clarias gariepinus. The results demonstrate that higher index values were recorded at station II than Station I for almost all the physicochemical parameters and only sulphate values from Stations I and II were statistically significant (P < 0.05).

The aim of this work was to determine the depuration efficiencies of an infiltration percolation plant to remove organic matter and nutrients (N and P) and to test the effect of treatment by such system on the fertilizer value of wastewater compared to untreated influent and a control (groundwater). Results of investigations carried out over a month of each season showed the high capacity of this depuration system to remove both particulate and dissolved organic matter (TSS 91%, COD 93% and dCOD 89 to 95%) at all season. Nitrogen and phosphorus were more eliminated at winter and summer. At spring they presented a low percent removal efficiency due probably to overloaded influent. Tests consisting in the reuse a raw wastewater (RW), settled wastewater (SW) or completely treated wastewater (FW) for irrigation of (Lolium perenne) plots showed that biomass yield, nutrients (N,P) exported by plants and protein amount in the plants tissue decreased from plots irrigated by (RW) to completely treated wastewater. But all of them were more important than in the control plants (irrigated by groundwater) and exceeded the mean values reported in literature for meadows plants. The amount of nitrogen and P2O5) applied during the irrigation by wastewater, was equivalent or superior to recommanded dose of fertilizer for meadows. The expected meat or milk production showed a promising potentiality to promove the nutritional quality of farm animals food by using treated wastewater.

The results of reproduction were tested in females of the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell 1822) after stimulation of ovulation with carp pituitary (4 mg/kg body weight) or with Lecirelin (15 &mu;g/kg) and metoclopramide (10 mg/kg). After administering the synthetic substance eggs were obtained from all females while in the group treated with pituitary homogenate 7 out of 8 hypophysed females spawned. The applied spawning agent did not significantly influence the weight of eggs expressed in grams, but in the case of females treated with carp pituitary homogenate a significantly higher weight of eggs expressed as the percentage of body weight of fish was recorded. The applied stimulators of ovulation did not affect any trait reflecting the quality of eggs. Females used as an experimental material belonged to two categories in respect of body weight: lighter females with average body weight of 2.63 &plusmn; 0.36 kg and heavier females with average body weight of 3.91 &plusmn; 0.48 kg. It was proved that the weight of eggs expressed either in grams or as a percentage of a female&rsquo;s weight was significantly related to the body weight of a female (P &le; 0.01 and P &le; 0.05, respectively), as well as the percentage of fertilised eggs and the percentage of living embryos after 28 hours of incubation (P &le; 0.05 and P &le; 0.05, respectively). The interaction between the stimulator of ovulation and the female body weight was significant only for traits reflecting the weight of obtained eggs (P &le; 0.05 and P &le; 0.01). &nbsp;

Ortho-phosphate inside recirculation aquaculture systems is limited as a consequence of precipitation and regular water exchange rates. To improve plant growth in coupled aquaponics, phosphate fertilizer addition to hydroponics can increase PO43−-P concentrations inside the process water. We investigated the effects of four PO43−-P concentrations (<10 (P0), 40, 80, 120 mg L−1) in rearing water on growth performance, feed efficiency, and welfare traits of juvenile African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822). By trend, optimum specific growth rate of 2.66% d−1 and feed conversion ratio of 0.71 were observed at 40 and 80 mg L−1 PO43−-P. Higher PO43−-P significantly affected skin coloration, swimming activity and external injuries, with the palest and inactive fish combined with most external injuries in the P120 group. Mineral and protein contents in the fish remained unaffected, while fat content inside the fillets enriched with increasing PO43−-P. Inorganic P in blood plasma increased significantly, while phosphate concentrations inside the fillet remained unchanged. We suggest that PO43−-P concentrations of 40 to 80 mg L−1 do not reduce the performance of African catfish aquaculture, while increased values of 120 mg L−1 affect fish welfare. This allows limited addition of PO43−-P fertilizer in coupled aquaponics with African catfish to support plant growth.
