I fully appreciate and understand the nature of Dr. Bates' request. The many patients seeking treatment at our clinics make me uncomfortably aware of the problem. I wish I were able to give a more satisfactory answer. Many of the orthodontic problems, especially the severe ones, are best explained on a genetic basis. Therefore, prevention, except for a rather indelicate perusal of the family albums prior to the nuptial vows, is often not possible. In specific instances where the environment is unfavorable, such as crossbite and late thumbsuckers, the orthodontists and pedodontists can and are eliminating more extensive treatment by instituting preventive measures. However, these constituite a minority of the cases.

Orofacial cleft is one of the commonest congenital abnormalities which impacts negatively on the life of the individual and to a large extent affects the family. Caused by the interaction of environmental and genetic factors, this abnormality brings about decreased quality of life. Management of this abnormality entails a team involving a cleft surgeon, speech therapist, dentist, orthodontists, and so forth. This study involves the review of the various literatures on orofacial clefts, discussing the problems on the genetic basis, associated syndromes, and their management. Counseling of prospective mothers should be promoted to ensure that the abnormality is prevented at the early stages. Education on orofacial clefts should be promoted to create awareness on its preventive measures. Much attention must be geared towards cleft genetics studies to identify potential risk factors which might be predisposing individuals to the anomaly.

Relevance. Periodontal diseases are a medical and social problem due to the wide spread among the population of developed countries and the impact on the quality of life. Among the many factors that are important in the development of inflammatory periodontal diseases, an important role is played by adherence to the recommendations of the dentist in respecting oral hygiene. Aim of the work was to study the adherence of patients of the dental clinic to compliance with preventive measures in the oral cavity.Materials and methods. A total of 98 patients of dental clinic, 62 female (medial age 38,6 ± 14,0 years) and 36 male (medial age 37,2±13,1 years) participated in survey. The study participants flled in the profle and answered questions about age, gender, harmful working conditions and bad habits, frequency of visits to the dental clinic, attitudes to the prevention of dental diseases, knowledge about the means and methods of oral hygiene.Results. As a result of the study, it was found that in the vast majority of cases, respondents are employed in production that does not adversely affect their health (91%), only 8% of patients indicated harmful working conditions.Conclusions. The study revealed that, despite the recommendations of the dentist, patients are not always committed to the implementation of preventive measures in the oral cavity. Dentists need to motivate patients to use not only the usual methods and means of hygiene, but also additional ones necessary for maintaining dental health.

Wolfram Syndrome (WS) is a rare disease (RD) with an estimated prevalence of 1/770,000 inhabitants. It is considered a multisystemic, chronic and progressive disease.WS diagnosis implies devastating consequences at physical, educational and emotional levels. WS is also known by the acronym DIDMOAD, derived from the first letters of the main clinical symptoms: Diabetes Insipidus, Diabetes Mellitus, Optic Atrophy, and Deafness. Rare diseases are characterized by their low prevalence and the lack of knowledge on the pathophysiology and treatment of them. Interestingly, around 80% of RD have a genetic basis, and this fact causes doubts and uncertainties in the couples, about the idea of having another child. The existence of a RD in a family, alters significantly the relationships and the quality of life within the family. The present work remarks the huge value of psychosocial aspects in order to pay an adequate attention to these patients, not only taking care of the clinical aspects. The main purpose of this study has been to ascertain the quality of life of Wolfram’s syndrome affected patients, and its impact in the daily life.

ABSTRACTSpecimens of trematopid amphibians from the Asturian (Upper Carboniferous) of Nýřany, Czech Republic, are redescribed as two taxa, namely Mordex calliprepes Steen and Mattauschia (gen. nov) laticeps Fritsch. Mordex calliprepes is represented by a single post-metamorphic specimen and has the diagnostic trematopid characters of the nasal region. Mattauschia laticeps is represented by one adult partial skull and mandible plus some fragments and two small post-metamorphic specimens including the species name-bearer. It has the trematopid-type modified lacrimal and a large but oval naris and appears to be the most primitive trematopid yet described. The stratigraphically sequential large trematopids Mattauschia, Fedexia, Ecolsonia and Acheloma show progressive acquisition of the derived features that characterise the terminal form Acheloma.Mordex has a combination of primitive and derived characters and its position within the family is less clear. The many ‘branchiosaurs' in the Nýřany assemblage include specimens that could be larvae of both Mordex and Mattauschia but certain attribution is not possible and they are assigned to Olsoniformes incertae sedis. Mordex and Mattauschia appear to be terrestrial exotic elements in the Nýřany tetrapod assemblage, but with possible larvae in the lake assemblage. Representatives of at least four Palaeozoic dissorophoid families were present in late Middle Pennsylvanian/Asturian strata implying diversification of the Dissorophoidea prior to this time.

The letters from Teodor Parnicki, first sent during his years as an émigré in Mexico, and then from Poland, are a vocal testimony to the many years of friendship between the said novelist and Tadeusz Banaś and his family. Aside from recollections of Lviv (then Polish Lwów), where the two initiated their relationship while being in-volved in Sygnały magazine during interwar years, another valuable element of the correspondence in question is Parnicki’s translation of Valery Bryusov’s poem Cienie [Shadows], as well as (quoted by Parnicki entirely from his memory) a poem by Tadeusz Hollender Pochwała Parnickiego i filozofii jego (A Praise of Parnicki and His Philosophy). The collection is concluded by two letters written by Eleonora Parnicka, sent to the family Banaś after her husband’s death in 1988.

ABSTRACT Background Trauma prevention made in the childhood presents great effectiveness for it is in this age that habits and values of safety and citizenship are created. This research intends to analyze which preventive measures are more frequently adopted by the parents of 0 to 12-year-old children and find the relation between prevention and family income. Study design For data collection we handed questionnaires to the parents of children studying in public and private schools in Curitiba-PR, Brasil. The information obtained was analyzed by the programs Epi Info® and Excel®. Results A total of 609 questionnaires were analyzed 291 children (47.8%) were female and 318 (52.2%) were male. From the total, 604 (99.2%) declared to take at least one preventive measure. The most common measures were: 'leaving the handle of the pan inward the stove' with 562 (92.28%), 'wearing seat belt' with 560 (91.95%) and 'leaving medicines and chemical products out of reach' with 541 (88.83%). The parents marked on the questionnaires which measures they adopted with their children out of a list with eight examples. Families with the income of 1 minimum wage (MW) had an average of 2.92 marked options; with the income of 1 to 3 MWs an average of 3.6; 3 to 6 MWs an average of 4.73; 6 to 10 MWs average of 4.91 and above 10 MWs average of 5.31. Discussion Even though most of the families used at least one kind of preventive measure with their children, the family income has marked influence on the amount and type of adopted measures. AbstractIntroduction.Parental alcohol abuse hinders a child’s development, which means that these children are more exposed to mental health problems.Aim.The aim of this study was to analyze the link between the intensity of eating disorders in youngsters and family alcoholism.Material and methods. The study was conducted among adolescents in the Lubelskie province. 1766 students, aged 12 to 22 were participants in the study. The authors used a method called Eating Disorder Inventory, as well as a self-designed questionnaire that included assessing the characteristics of every family.Results.The findings of this study show that increased symptoms of eating disorders in children and teenagers correlates with alcohol dependency in the family. Adolescent children of alcoholics have higher levels of conflict identifying feelings and emotions (hunger, security) correctly. They were more likely to deem their actions as ineffective, as well as they were more frequently prone to binge eating than individuals who were not affected by drinking parents.Conclusions.There is a need for some future work and preventive measures to be taken in families affected by problem drinking.

This family business case study is concerned with investigating the issue of the complexity of the many views of the family business research, focusing exclusively on the entrepreneurial concept. In taking this concept, three characteristics were identified in this case study, namely: the attitudes, the skills, and the behavior. Along with these findings, it is suggested that the conceptual model, the so-called “the three circles,” where this three circle has an overlap and identify as a longer-term entrepreneurial perspective within the family-owned enterprise.

Child sexual abuse is a commonly encountered and often emotionally damaging experience, maintained by secrecy and followed by denial after disclosure. Treatment in this field involves both the child and the family in a variety of treatment settings and modalities, often proceeding in parallel. Child developmental considerations dictate that treatment often proceeds in phases. It aims to protect the child from further abuse and the consequences of disclosure, and address the trauma and context of the abuse. Careful planning and co-operation is required by the many professionals working in this stressful area in order to avoid confusion, conflicts, and splits which may mirror relationships in the family. The heterogeneity of the problem is reflected in the fact that treatment cannot be offered in a uniform programme. Legal issues may influence the treatment process. Evaluation of treatment modalities, the identification of protective factors and achieving long-term adjustment in the least detrimental manner offer challenges in this newly developing field.
