A case of sternomastoid tumor of infancy is described which presented clinically as a neck mass without torticollis and simulated a neoplasm. Four aspects of the problem are discussed: (1) the relationship of tumor and torticollis; (2) the etiology and pathogenesis; (3) the differential diagnosis from sarcoma; and (4) the treatment. Prophylactic resection of the mass to exclude a possible malignant tumor or to prevent the subsequent development of torticollis, is not justified, since in about 80% of cases spontaneous regression occurs without sequelae. The institution of passive neck exercises over a period of several months during and following degression of the mass may contribute to a decreased incidence of deformities.

A mother's expectations about the development of her infant have been found to be a strong determinant of child development, but little is known about the factors that may affect maternal assessment of development. In this study, the relationship of the mother's opinion of the development of her infant with several sociodemographic, antenatal, intrapartum, and infant health variables was examined for a large sample of 1-year-old infants for whom gross motor observations were also obtained at the time of the interview. Among those observed to be developing at an appropriate rate, 4.0% were perceived by their mothers as developing more slowly than the mothers considered normal; among infants developing more slowly, 28.6% were considered to be developing slowly by their mothers. In both groups, the major determinants of maternal opinion of slow development concerned the infant's health: low birth weight, congenital anomalies regardless of severity, hospitalization during the first year of life, and high ambulatory care use. These results indicate that maternal perception of infant development may not reflect the infant's level, but past or present illness, and raise questions about the influence of infant health on maternal-infant interactions and the effect of such interactions on subsequent development in the child.

Most of the available evidence relating early experience to subsequent cognitive development has been concerned with interpersonal interaction variables. In the present paper the relationship of physical environment parameters to development was considered. Subjects were 23 infants who had previously taken part in a longitudinal project which included measurements of the child's physical environment between 12 and 24 months. These measurements were related to the infant's Binet performance at 31 months of age. Results indicated that some physical environment parameters including the presence of audio-visually responsive toys and a lack of overcrowding were related to subsequent Binet performance all across the second year of life. Other items were related to subsequent development only at certain time periods. A breakdown by sex suggested that female development was sensitive to environmental parameters at an earlier age than males and that females were uniquely sensitive to variety/change in their environment. Implications of these findings for early remediation were considered.

Attention is directed to the diagnosis of acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalitis and the possibility of its clinical recognition is discussed. Three case histories, two diagnosed at autopsy and one clinically, are presented. The latter was treated with very generous doses of steroids and recovered spectacularly. On omission of steroids, a mild, temporary clinical recurrence occurred. Clinical, clinicopathologic, and pathologic aspects of the disease are discussed, and etiologic factors mentioned. Some thoughts on the relationship of this disease to experimental allergic encephalomyelitis are mentioned. Differential diagnosis is considered and the use of biopsy for confirmation of diagnosis especially from herpes encephalitis considered. A plea is made for the trial of treatment with large doses of steroids.

To modern writers, the distinctive achievement of twentieth-century jurisprudence can be viewed as its emancipation from the narrow confines of English utilitarianism, and the subsequent development of perspectives rooted in the fundamental values of justice and rights. The central jurisprudential task of the new century is thus the exploration of a deeper, more elusive moral standpoint, the most profound intellectual commitments of which are yet to be fully digested and understood. My aim in this essay is to reveal something of the character of those commitments by considering the relationship of our present thinking about law and morality to its historical development.

A systematic examination of the effects of traditional herbal medicines including their mechanisms could allow for their effective use and provide opportunities to develop new medicines. Coix seed has been suggested to promote spontaneous regression of viral skin infection. Purified oil from coix seed has also been suggested to increase the peripheral CD4+ lymphocytes. We, herein, attempt to shed more light on the way through which coix seed affects the human systemic immune function by hypothesizing that a central role to these changes could be played through changes in the gut microbiota. To that end, healthy adult males (n = 19) were divided into two groups; 11 of them consumed cooked coix seed (160 g per day) for 7 days (intervention), while the other eight were given no intervention. One week of coix seed consumption lead to an increase of the intestinal Faecalibacterium abundance and of the abundance (as % presence of overall peripheral lymphocytes) of CD3+CD8+ cells, CD4+ cells, CD4+CD25+ cells, and naïve/memory T cell ratio. As the relationship of microbiota and skin infection has not been clarified, our findings could provide a clue to a mechanism through which coix seed could promote the spontaneous regression of viral skin infections.

This Introduction provides a general contextual background to the question of agnosticism. It addresses the question of definition: how the term ‘agnosticism’ has been variously defined, and some of the various sub-divisions of different types of agnosticism that have appeared in scholarly literature. The Introduction also considers contextual historical issues, identifying the origins of the term in the nineteenth century, and its subsequent development. It considers the relationship of agnosticism to both theism and atheism, identifying strains of agnosticism within theology, and looking at the relationship of agnosticism to recent manifestations of ‘New Atheism’. Finally, the Introduction discusses the essays that follow, identifying both convergences and divergences between them. It suggests that although the essays employ different methodologies and reach distinct conclusions, many of them suggest that agnosticism may not be as incompatible with religious belief and practices as has sometimes been assumed.

This study proposes approaches aimed at methodological support for solving the problem of formalized evaluation of the effectiveness of regional higher education systems. The main feature of the work is the use of methods of comparison of «input» and «output» stream values characterizing the parameters of the functioning of the regional higher school. Using the approaches of regulation of the analyzed indicators and the subsequent development on this basis of indices of efficiency, are multi-component calculations that assess the level of generation output 1 unit output parameter, which identifies the financial-economic component of the regional high school. As a result of the implemented assessments, the regions of the Volga Federal district with moderate and strong positions in the sphere of generated effects characterizing their effectiveness in comparison with the invested financial resources are identified.
