Of all the forms of deception, self-deception is both the most ubiquitous and the most resistant to detection and correction. When sanctioned and legitimated by professional groups, Dr Margolis1 argues, self-deception is all the more pernicious and dangerous. Most important, he asserts that the collective belief that physician behavior is not influenced by gift-giving pharmaceutical companies is an abandonment of the fiduciary responsibility of the physician and an ethical violation of the first order. Dr Margolis describes in excellent fashion how that abandonment violates fundamental ethical principles of nonmaleficence, fidelity, and justice. He also suggests that the pursuit of the self-deception threatens the very autonomy which physicians cherish as the bedrock of their professional identity.

Context. Saturn’s mid-sized moons (satellites) have a puzzling orbital configuration with trapping in mean-motion resonances with every-other pairs (Mimas-Tethys 4:2 and Enceladus-Dione 2:1). To reproduce their current orbital configuration on the basis of a recent model of satellite formation from a hypothetical ancient massive ring, adjacent pairs must pass first-order mean-motion resonances without being trapped. Aims. The trapping could be avoided by fast orbital migration and/or excitation of the satellite’s eccentricity caused by gravitational interactions between the satellites and the rings (the disk), which are still unknown. In our research we investigate the satellite orbital evolution due to interactions with the disk through full N-body simulations. Methods. We performed global high-resolution N-body simulations of a self-gravitating particle disk interacting with a single satellite. We used N ∼ 105 particles for the disk. Gravitational forces of all the particles and their inelastic collisions are taken into account. Results. Dense short-wavelength wake structure is created by the disk self-gravity and a few global spiral arms are induced by the satellite. The self-gravity wakes regulate the orbital evolution of the satellite, which has been considered as a disk spreading mechanism, but not as a driver for the orbital evolution. Conclusions. The self-gravity wake torque to the satellite is so effective that the satellite migration is much faster than was predicted with the spiral arm torque. It provides a possible model to avoid the resonance capture of adjacent satellite pairs and establish the current orbital configuration of Saturn’s mid-sized satellites.

Based on the vibration problem of the plane gate in the inverted siphon exit of a large-scale hydraulic project in northern Xinjiang, the software ANSYS is used to build the entity model and finite element model. Considering the influence of fluid-solid coupling, the self-vibration characteristics of the gate in the water and without water are analyzed. The first six self-vibration frequencies and vibration modes of the gate are calculated. The results show that the height of water has a significant impact on the self-vibration frequencies of the plane gate. The first order natural frequency on the condition of small opening is decreased by 28.5%. It shows that the structure of the plane gate must be improved.

The purpose of this chapter was to critically examine the reconstruction of professional identity between two crises: The Great Recession of 2008 and the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. Using a critical participatory action research self-study design, the author deconstructs the transition from for-profit behavioral health care business leadership to adjunct professor. Data sources include U.S. government job classification profiles, syllabi from courses taught, and the university's corresponding student surveys to answer the primary research question: How can teaching action research contribute to the reshaping of professional identity? Data analysis revealed that iterative cycles of reflection and action in teaching action research supported the development of identity as an academic across time. The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for a career in business supported, and also interfered with, career transition. Lastly, the author understood that the problem of practice stemmed from lack of recognition of her own privilege.

Professional identity is the embodiment of life’s meanings and values of the individual. Its fulfillment rests in its basis on the person’s perception of oneself and attitude toward oneself. Even choosing a certain profession and studying it, the students still have a choice of further professional identity. In consideration of the foregoing,the purpose of the work is to study the characteristics of self-perception and meaningful orientations of professionally determined students. Methodological tools of the study were Maslow’s self-actualization scales, a test of meaningful orientations, a questionnaire aimed at identifying professionally determined and not determined students. 96 students took part in the study. The results showed that professionally determined students have a tendency to a fairly high general meaningfulness of life. They feel that they can manage their own lives and have a sufficient level of responsibility. The self-esteem of the professionally determined students is related to the positive perception of their life in each of its periods. In general, professionally determined students have many characteristics similar to professionally not determined students, but they also have specific features. They are manifested in the interconnection between meaningful orientations, self-esteem and self-acceptance of professionally determined and not determined students.

This paper is based on the concern of a novice physical education teacher to reinforce the self-esteem and motor competence sensations of students during lessons. This concern arises from the experiences gained as a student. I draw on autobiographical narratives to delve into how these experiences led me to develop a feeling of learned incompetence, a sense of failure within the educational system and, consequently, an obvious difficulty to shape my personal and professional identity. However, it is these same experiences that condition professional development and teaching practice. Thus, I attempt to break from pedagogical models and to offer a dignified and democratic education to students. I attempt to engage the reader by communicating the subjectivity of different moments in a provocative, fragmented, physical, and emotional manner. Thus, I share the concerns, reflections, and manner of working, as a teacher, in the form of autobiographical reports and class journals. The intention is to understand how this manner of working responds to the feelings of incompetence learned by school children.

AbstractThe consistence between the Stokes wave theory and general wave theory is examined in this study. As well known, the nonlinear terms of Stokes wave are generated by the self-interaction of first-order wave. On the other side, using the general wave theory one can also obtain the nonlinear solutions according to the interaction of n waves with the same amplitude, frequency and phase. It is found that the inconsistence between these two wave trains arises due to the subharmonic effects included in general wave theory but not considered in the Stokes theory. In conclusion, these two theories are substantially different unless the Bernoulli constants are properly chosen for mathematical equivalence.

The major products of the self-reaction of 1,1-diphenylethylperoxyl have been determined from product studies of the autoxidation of 1,1-diphenylethane, induced decomposition of 1,1-diphenylethyl hydroperoxide, and decomposition of 2,2,3,3-tetraphenylbutane under an atmosphere of oxygen. Overall self-reaction is a complex free-radical process involving the intermediacy of 1,1-diphenylethoxyl and 1-phenyl-1-phenoxyethoxyl which undergo H-atom abstraction, β-scission and, in the case of the former radical, rearrangement. Hydroperoxide decomposition under an atmosphere of 36O2 has shown that 1,1-diphenylethylperoxyl undergoes β-scission faster than α-cumylperoxyl at 303 K in solution. The values of the rate constants for self-reaction of Ph2C(Me)O2• relative to those for tert-butylperoxyl are, however, not affected by this reaction. Furthermore they are not affected to any appreciable extent by the efficiency with which Ph2C(Me)O•, formed in nonterminating self-reactions, escape from the solvent cage. They are influenced principally by the first-order rate of decomposition of Ph2C(Me)OOOOC(Me)Ph2.

It is argued that the Web is transforming schooling in the 21st century, and as such altering the terrain of what leadership “means.” Theorizing our submersion in the Internet, we discover that the Web enhances a leadership-for paradigm, while at the same time it militates against what is defined as a leadership-with paradigm. For the power of the Web is its capacity to transform our desire for meaningful interconnectedness: transforming “spirituality” and “authenticity” into products for the self-help industry, and leadership into something not intended—disembodied leadership. In our postmodern culture, revoultionary leadership can act to counter disembodiment in its demand for an embodied, “incarnate” leadership. With embodied leadership comes our solidarity with one another: our passionate sense of commitment for social justice and where one acts with such intensity as to stretch the boundary we normally consider as being “professional” into being “revolutionary.” As such, revolutionary leadership is moral, spiritual, and authentic in that one is released from one's professional identity.
