<p>This paper presents results of a palynomorphological study of representatives of subsection <em>Heterophylla</em> (<em>C. </em><em>r</em><em>otundifolia</em><em>,</em> <em>C</em>. <em>k</em><em>ladniana</em><em>,</em> <em>C. </em><em>p</em><em>olymorpha</em><em>,</em> <em>C. serrata</em>) of section <em>Campanula</em><em> </em>of genus <em>Campanula</em><em> i</em>n the flora of Ukraine. This was the initial study of C. <em>k</em><em>ladniana</em><em> </em>and <em>C. </em><em>s</em><em>errata</em><em> </em>for the Ukrainian flora. The common and different palynomorphology features were identified for this species. We discovered that the porous and spheroidal in polar view pollen grains were the common palynological features. We aslo founded that the common characteristic of all the species was echinate-wrinkled or rugulose grained surface with disseminated location of thorns without the spines. We suggested that further palynomorphological research of genus <em>Campanula</em> could show the level of the diagnostic value of these peculiarities. The species-specific characteristics were: shape of pollen grains (<em>C. </em><em>k</em><em>ladniana</em><em> </em>has spheroidal pollen grains), the number of pores (pollen grains of <em>C</em>. <em>kl</em><em>adniana</em><em> </em>has three to five pores, <em>C. rotundifolia</em> – three, <em>C. polymorpha</em> and <em>C. serrata</em> – three or four), availability of short thorns on the exina surface (absent in pollen grains of<em>C. serrata</em>), and the size of pollen grains (the smallest were registered in <em>C. </em><em>r</em><em>otundifolia</em><em>, </em>22,65x24,82 m-3).<em></em></p>

Pollen morphology of 11 Iranian Dracocephalum L. species was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy to evaluate their taxonomic significance for the infrageneric classification of the genus. Pollen grains of all examined taxa were isopolar, hexacolpate, circular in polar view and spheroidal to prolate in equatorial view (P/E = 1.0?2.0). The smallest pollen grains were observed in D. aucheri (P = 29.7 ?m, E = 22.6 ?m), while the largest pollen was found in D. lindbergii (P = 45.1 ?m, E = 33.7 ?m). The highest and lowest apocolpium index (AI) were measured in D. aucheri (AI = 0.27) and D. surmandinum (AI = 0.08), respectively. Colpus membrane was egranulate in all examined species except for D. multicaule and D. ghahremanii. The main exine ornamentation type was characterized as bireticulate including five different subtypes. The results revealed that the exine ornamentation is a diagnostic character useful for the classification of Dracocephalum.Bangladesh J. Plant Taxon. 22(2): 99-110, 2015 (December)

A histologic examination of spontaneous cases of sawdust livers in cattle indicated that the focal liver necrosis was an expression of vitamin E-selenium deficiency. The condition was reproduced in Hereford steers by feeding a diet rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and poor in protein, vitamin E. and selenium. Lesions also occurred in the kidney, heart, skeletal muscled and pylorus. Addition of dictary protein or injection of selenium partially prevented the condition. Cellular anoxia with formation of hyalinc bodies in the liver and kidney was considered to be the common denominator of the degenerative changes. Due to the relatively mild tissue changes, plasma GOT and OCT determinations were found to be of no diagnostic value.

All caspases evolved from a common ancestor and subsequently developed into two general classes, inflammatory or apoptotic caspases. The caspase-hemoglobinase fold has been conserved throughout nearly one billion years of evolution and is utilized for both the monomeric and dimeric subfamilies of apoptotic caspases, called initiator and effector caspases, respectively. We compared the folding and assembly of procaspase-3b from zebrafish to that of human effector procaspases in order to examine the conservation of the folding landscape. Urea-induced equilibrium folding/unfolding of procaspase-3b showed a minimum three-state folding pathway, where the native dimer isomerizes to a partially folded dimeric intermediate, which then unfolds. A partially folded monomeric intermediate observed in the folding landscape of human procaspase-3 is not well-populated in zebrafish procaspase-3b. By comparing effector caspases from different species, we show that the effector procaspase dimer undergoes a pH-dependent conformational change, and that the conformational species in the folding landscape exhibit similar free energies. Together, the data show that the landscape for the caspase-hemoglobinase fold is conserved, yet it provides flexibility for species-specific stabilization or destabilization of folding intermediates resulting in changes in stability. The common pH-dependent conformational change in the native dimer, which yields an enzymatically inactive species, may provide an additional, albeit reversible, mechanism for controlling caspase activity in the cell.

Besides the common respiratory symptoms or viral pneumonia, COVID-19 is also presented with different neurological symptoms. Olfactory dysfunction (OD) or impairment of the sense of smell is one of the common neurological symptoms being reported in infection caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The severity varies from anosmia to microsmia or hyposmia. OD could have a potential early screening and diagnostic value besides other neurological and common respiratory symptoms. In our descriptive concise review, we aimed to elicit the manifestation of olfactory dysfunction as an early predictor of SARS-CoV-2 infection. We are also aiming to establish, OD as a quick and reliable assessment tool of COVID-19 risk, among the healthcare workers and contact tracers, which can justify self-quarantine of the person as well as recommendation for testing on a priority basis. We have also focused on, any effect to produce this symptom by the drug used for treatment in COVID-19, and if the old age of the patient showing any extra influence to develop OD in COVID-19.

Pollen grains of 92 species (from 99 collections) belonging to the genus Com-bretum (Combretaceae) were examined by Light Microscope (LM) and Scan-ning Electron Microscope (SEM). These species are representatives of vari-ous taxa outlined in the latest taxonomic revision of the genus. The genus belongs to a tropical or subtropical family, frequently encountered in various Quaternary deposits and acts as ecological indicator in various habitats. Pol-len grains of all members of the genus Combretum examined are hetero-colpate (with three simple apertures alternating with three composite ones) and exhibited wide range of inter-specific variation with respect to polar axes (P), Equatorial diameters (E), P/E ratios, shape classes, shape in polar view, costae pori, vestibula, protrusion of endoapertures and exine sculptur-ings. Species delimitation in these nine characters is tabulated. Four shape classes, eight exine sculpturings and seven pollen types were recognized. A key for identification to these pollen types is presented and the species in-cluded in each of these types are also outlined. Previous macro-morphological and molecular classification of the genus were discussed in the light of the present palynological study.

Abstract Introduction The annual cost of diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) exceeds 12.4 billion dollars in the United States. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) require that after initiation of positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy patients have physician follow up and comply with specific requirements. Otherwise, continued PAP benefits are terminated and patients must undergo repeat sleep testing to reinstate therapy. Repeat testing can become an economic burden. We hypothesize that restudying patients prior to reinstating PAP therapy does not change the diagnosis and may only result in increased health care costs. Methods A chart review of polysomnographic studies (PSG) was performed on Medicare referrals made for the purposes of recertification to the Memorial Hermann Sleep center between October 2018 and 2019. Demographic and diagnostic data (including AHI) were collected. The percentage of patients with a change of diagnosis between the initial study and the recertification study was documented. Results 429 Medicare patients were referred for polysomnography. 34 patients were referred for PAP recertification. The average age in the recertification group was 65 years, 47% were male with an average BMI of 33.4 kg/m2. The average AHI on the recertification study was 33.5 events/hour (range 7-114). None of the patients sent for PAP recertification by polysomnography had a negative study for OSA. Conclusion Repeat PSG did not change the need for PAP therapy in patients originally diagnosed with OSA (all the patients continued to qualify). The mandatory referral of all patients who do not meet the CMS requirements for continued benefits for PAP, represents an extra cost to the health care system without a change in the clinical therapy. This money may better be utilized in providing patient education known to improve adherence to PAP. Support N/A

Abstract A study on the flowering biology and pollen production of the common laburnum (Laburnum anagyroides Med.) was conducted under the conditions of Lublin during the period 2004 - 2006. The flowering of this species began in the second 10-day period of May and lasted for 2.5 - 4 weeks. The flowers of common laburnum are borne in showy golden-yellow pendulous racemes. They develop successively, starting from the base and moving to the tip of an inflorescence. During the growing season, one shrub produces 800 to 3200 racemes, with 14 to 35 flowers in a single raceme. On average, the flowering duration for a raceme was 12.8 days and 8.7 days for a single flower. Throughout the study years, the shrubs proved to be most attractive in the third 10-day period of May when they reached full bloom. The average weight of pollen produced was 6.08 mg per 10 flowers of Laburnum anagyroides, 14.02 mg per raceme, and 26.0 g per shrub. Pollen grains reached average dimensions of 24.01 μm × 24.26 μm.

Many freshwater fish worldwide have been shown to use Structural Woody Habitat (SWH) for a variety of reasons. The mid reaches of the Murray River, a large lowland river in south-eastern Australia, was surveyed by boat electrofishing, to investigate the use of SWH type (hollows, rootmass and solids), SWH distance to bank (near bank, intermediate to bank and mid-channel) and the interaction between SWH type and distance to bank. The study found that Murray cod catch per unit effort (CPUE) increased in near-bank areas when hollows were a component of the SWH. The CPUE of trout cod was higher when hollows were present. However, the interactions between distance to bank and hollow SWH were complex and dependent on presence or absence of rootmass. The species-specific interactions between SWH microhabitat and distance to bank found within this study has important relevance for stream managers. The common practice of realigning SWH favours Murray cod over trout cod, which could have negative consequences for the endangered trout cod. More broadly, managers may need to consider a balance of SWH type and where it is placed in the river for the species they are targeting when rehabilitating rivers via the introduction of SWH.

Solanum commersonii Dun. (cmm) is a diploid wild species of potential value for potato breeding. Ploidy level manipulations are necessary to cross this species with the common potato. This could be achieved by the use of "bridge" species and sexual polyploidization in which 2n gametes are involved. Eight introductions of cmm were screened for production of (i) diplandroids, through cytological observations confirmed by controlled 4x Solanum acaule Bitt. (acl) × 2x cmm crosses, and (ii) diplogynoids, by controlled 2x cmm × 2x Solanum gourlayi Haw. (grl) crosses. Eleven plants produced 1–3% large size pollen and one plant produced more than 3% of this type of pollen. Twelve triploid and seven tetraploid hybrids were obtained when these plants were used in crosses with acl. On the other hand, 75 triploid hybrids were obtained from the second type of cross. The average pollen stainability in the diplogynoid triploid cmm × grl hybrids was 18.9%, with a range of 2–34.4%. Forty-four to 54.6% of meiocytes with parallel spindles in metaphase II and anaphase II were observed in microsporogenesis of these hybrids. For each clone, the frequency of triplandroids predicted according to the frequency of meiocytes with parallel, fused and tripolar spindles in anaphase II were 52.3, 36.6, and 45.2%, respectively. These values were highly superior to the frequency of triplandroids predicted according to the number of dyads and triads observed, 8.8, 0.7, and 3.9%, respectively. However, triplandroid frequencies predicted according to the frequencies of fused and tripolar spindles agree with the triplandroid frequencies observed. The frequencies of stainable pollen grains are not completely accounted for by the formation of fused and tripolar spindles. In view of the variability encountered in size, it is assumed that a high proportion of gametophytes with aneuploid chromosome numbers are also stainable. A hypothesis is put forward regarding the possible genetic control of triplandroid formation in the diplogynous triploid hybrids analyzed.Key words: 2n gametes, triploid hybrids, spindle orientation, Solanum commersonii Dun.

AbstractIn this study, pollen grains and anatomical features of Turkish lilies were investigated under the electron (SEM) and light (LM) microscope. LM and SEM observations showed that the pollen grains are monosulcate, heteropolar, elliptical in polar view and oblate. Numerical results based on combined palynological and anatomical characters were discussed and compared with traditional taxonomic treatments. It was found that the midrib shape, mesophyll type, P/E (polar/equatorial), sulcus length, and lumina width are the most valuable traits in separating the examined taxa. The numerical analysis showed that Lilium candidum L. differs from the rest Turkish Lilium and also confirmed a close relationship between L. szovitsianum Fisch. & Avé-Lall. and L. armenum Miscz. ex Grossh. Also this study is the first report dealing with anatomical and palynological features of all Turkish lilies.
