The article analyzes modern methods of teaching a foreign language and justifies the expediency of their use in technical institutions of higher education. The process of teaching English in non-linguistic higher educational institutions has certain features related to the different initial level of language training of first-year students; the number of academic hours allocated to the study of this discipline; the quantitative composition of groups; low motivation to learn a foreign language. It is noted that motivation plays an important role in the educational process, the formation of which among students of technical universities should be one of the main tasks of the educational process. It is established that it is possible to significantly increase the effectiveness of the lesson provided that the content of the discipline "foreign language" is professionally oriented in technical universities. It is found that the use of interactive learning technologies involves the use of communicative, in particular cognitive-communicative, and constructivist methods of teaching a foreign language. It is proved that the use of innovative approaches to teaching English and multimedia teaching tools allows students to increase motivation to learn foreign languages, provide access to new, alternative sources of information, develop independent mental activity, form communication skills, cultural and professional competence.

The present study exhibits an outsight over the prominent problems that face the educational process and an outlook over the preparatory school syllabuses conducted in teaching English language in Iraq. Three syllabuses are to be concerned in the present study: the New English Course for Iraq (NECI), Iraq Opportunities (IO) and English for Iraq (EFI). The study propounds the main characteristics of each syllabus and their relativity to the variant approaches of teaching. The NECI conducted a classical mode of teaching, started with the sixties of the last century and continued until the year-study 2012-2013, for the sixth preparatory. English for Iraq, now replaced the "Iraq Opportunities",  is taught for 4th, 5th and 6th preparatory.          On the other hand, the study tackles the main problems that are also obstacles to teaching/learning progression in Iraq, such as those of using helping sketches diverting students from the syllabus trends and abolishing many learning activities. Iraq Opportunities proved to be better than the two other syllabuses, mainly in its being based on communicative method of teaching and more appropriate for teaching students in Iraq.         The educational system in Iraq, as the study recommends, needs more reforming, development and planning on the educational needs, at the variant levels of reliability.

When you have a chance to teach English in Saudi Arabia at different levels – beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels, you will discover a lot of challenges that face a teacher of a foreign language. Those barriers vary from one situation into another, from one level into another, and from one place into another. Some barriers are connected with the culture in question, others – with the contents of the syllabus, passing through the method your students are taught with while taking other subjects. These aforementioned barriers are few among many others. They are focused on here because of their importance in obstructing learning and teaching a foreign language like English. Moreover, at a college level, English may be chosen as an optional, elective, pass-guaranteed, and grade-gained subject. In this sense, this issue might become a good topic for researchers who are interested in teaching and learning a foreign language. Some students told me in more than one department and on many occasions that they chose English because they do not like much work and in this subject they are sure of passing the test. What a teacher expects from such students is just nothing; they have no mere idea of learning at all. They need to fill in a number of courses they have to register in their transcripts with no effort on their part. I will address some of the challenges teachers of English at Saudi Arabian schools should be cautious of while practicing their career. The aim of this article is to attract the attention of teachers of foreign languages to these obstacles that definitely exist and hinder all efforts of teaching and learning a foreign language. At the end of this article, some suggestions are provided depending on my experience in teaching English at different levels and to different types of students.

Abstract There has been an increase in the importance of the cultural aspect in teaching and learning foreign languages, and teachers nowadays are supposed to stimulate the acquisition and development of intercultural competence in their students. Foreign language teaching and learning should be regarded from an intercultural perspective. The foreign language classes can be the link between the two cultures by which students have the opportunity to discover other values, mentalities, and facets of life. In doing this, a new vision should be taken into consideration, in which the teacher naturally and harmoniously combines the linguistic and cultural elements in the educational process during all types of lessons, irrespective of the topic being dealt with, or whether they focus on grammar or vocabulary issues. The culture and civilization notions must not be regarded separately, but should be integrated in the activities meant to develop the four language skills. This paper highlights the role of foreign language teachers in developing intercultural competence, the didactic activities used in forming the cadets’ intercultural competence, pointing to the way in which this competence is achieved in the military higher education environment as well
