The morphology of the esophageal mucosa in long-eared owl (Asio otus) and Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius) has been studied. Samples with exception of the region of the esophageal tonsil were obtained from 3 adult birds of each species. They were studied by light microscopy using classical methods of morphological research. The tissue samples were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin and embedded in paraffin block and finally the section were cut at 5–10 µm thickness using sliding microtome and stained with hematoxylin and eosin, according to Van Gizon and Weigert and impregnated with silver nitrate according to Kelemen. The esophageal mucosa consisted of four layers: epithelium, lamina propria, muscularis mucosae, and submucosa. The epithelium was stratified squamous and better developed in the cranial part of the esophagus. The lamina propria was represented by a loose connective tissue with small amount of elastic fibers. In the long-eared owl tightly located numerous small secretory sections of the esophagus glands organised in 1–3, and in branches of large folds up to 6 layers, were found. Their short excretory ducts opened to the surface of the mucosa. The muscularis mucosae was represented by a smooth muscle tissue with bundles of cells directed longitudinally and in some areas appeared to be absent. The submucosa was well developed, and as well as lamina propria was formed by a loose connective tissue with a large number of elastic fibers. In the submucosa of the Eurasian jay secretory departments of large, not tightly located, esophageal mucous glands were found. The esophageal mucosa of this birds formed well-developed folds, which were composed of  all its layers. Their number in the long-eared owl was 20–25 and in the Eurasian jay – 5–9. The shape of folds on the transverse section is not the same: in the long-eared owl it was finger-shaped and leaf-shaped, but in the Eurasian jay it was wedge-shaped. Some large folds in the long-eared owl branched into the secondary mucosal folds. The height of folds in cranial part of the esophagus was larger than in caudal part. In both parts of the esophagus of long-eared owl  the height of the large and middle folds was larger than that in the Eurasian jay. The height of small folds in the Eurasian jay was greater than that in the long-eared owl. In both parts of the esophagus of this birds, the fold’s width at the base exceeded its width at the top. In the Eurasian jay the width of base and top of large, medium and small folds was larger than that in the long-eared owl. The esophageal mucosa was poor on immune formations. They were represented by single accumulations of diffuse lymphoid tissue, and in the Eurasian jay – even by secondary lymphoid nodules.

The connection between the separate structural parts of the mucous membrane of the small intestine of laying hens and the typological features of the autonomic tone were investigated. The studies were conducted on adult chickens of the cross-breed "Isa-Brown", which were divided into two groups: sympathicotonic chickens and sympathico-normotonic chickens, by the methods of electrocardiography and variation-pulsometry research. In the small intestine of the poultry of each group, the linear dimensions were determined first, and then the volume of the entire mucous membrane and its separate parts (villi, crypt, muscular plate), as well as the volume of connective tissue fibers in the crypt region. Research has shown that the villi account for ¾ of the volume of the entire mucous membrane. The volume of villi in the entire small intestine is more important in sympathico-normotonic chickens. This same poultry group has an advantage in the indicators of the volume of the muscular plate, but only in the duodenum and jejunum. In indicators of crypt volume, it turned out to be quite the opposite of the relationship with the typology of autonomous influences. In all studied intestines, the higher values of this indicator belong to the sympathotonic chickens. However, in terms of the volume of the entire mucous membrane, larger values still correspond to sympathico-normotonic chickens. Sympathicotonic chickens are inferior to them in the duodenum – at 1,005 mm3, in the jejunum – at 2,699 mm3 and in the ileum – only 78 mm3. Investigating the structure of the villi, we established that the volume of their epithelium in all three sections of the small intestine has higher values in the sympathico-normotonic chickens, and the larger volume of the lamina propria of the villi in the sympathicotonic chickens. At the same time, the connection with the type of autonomic tone is reflected in the ratio between the two layers of villi. In all three sections of the small intestine of sympathicotonic chickens, the ratio between the epithelium and the lamina propria was, on average, 65%/35%, or 2/1. In sympathico-normotonic chickens, this ratio varied and, on average, equalled 75%/25%, or 3/1. The increase in the tone of sympathetic centers contributes to the growth of volume both as the total amount of fibers of connective tissue, and also as separate elastic fibers in the area of crypt. According to the data,indicators of the sympathico-normotonic chickens are inferior to those of sympathicotonic chickens in all of the small intestine. It was also found that in both groups of poultry the volume of elastic fibers was approximately half the volume of all fibers of the connective tissue of the duodenum. In other sections of the small intestine, this figure was reduced to about ⅓. Consequently, the typological features of the autonomic tone, providing various trophic-regulatory effects on the mucous membrane of the small intestine, cause the formation of differences in its volume.

AbstractThe study was conducted on 36 developing reticulum from healthy and normal embryos/ foeti of Indian goat. Embryos/foeti were assigned into three groups. Histo-differentiation of reticulum of goat stomach took place at 38 days of gestation. The wall of foetal reticulum was made up of three strata i. e. epithelium, pleuripotent blastemic tissue and serosa up to 49 days of fetal age and definite four layers viz. epithelium, propria-submucosa, tunica muscularis and serosa were observed first at 51 days of gestation. Upto 100 days of gestation the reticulum was lined by undifferentiated stratified epithelium and thereafter gradually transformed into stratified squamous epithelium. Keratinization was noticed at term. Primary and secondary reticular crests made their appearance at 60 and 112 days of gestation, respectively. Corial papillae were detected in primary and secondary reticular crests at 121 and 145 days of gestation, respectively. Near term, the core of the reticular crest also contained muscularis mucosae in its proximal 1/3rd region while core of the corial papillae contained only lamina propria. Reticular, collagen and elastic fibers came into sight at 46, 100 and 134 days of gestation, respectively.Summary statementThe study was conducted on intrauterine reticulum of Indian goat. From this study it can be concluded that the histogenesis of reticulum was almost completed in prenatal life. However, to become functional it still required more time as the relative sizes of reticulum and process of keratinization were yet to be completed.

The sources of vascularization of the kidneys of five polar owl carcasses were studied by filling the vessels with self-hardening plastic Belokril through the femoral artery. High-grade oil paints were added to the monomer to give the vessels the desired color. After the injection, the carcasses were placed in a high concentration caustic soda solution for three days. The resulting corrosion impression was washed under warm water and dried. It was identified that in the lumbar trunk, the main vessel was the descending aorta, from which extra- and intraorganic arteries departed for vascularizing the kidneys. Extraorganic arteries included external and internal iliac, sciatic and middle sacral arteries. Intraorganic arteries included cranial, middle, and caudal renal arteries. Inside the parenchyma of each lobe of the kidney, intraorganic arteries branched in the main type of caudomedial, dorsomedial and lateromedial directions and were subdivided into segmental, interlobular and perilobular arteries and intralobular capillaries. An asymmetry in the branching of the renal arteries was observed. During histological examination, we noted that the renal arteries were lined with endothelium on the inner side and the intima contained endotheliocytes with oval nuclei. Under the endothelial layer were loose collagen fibers running along the middle shell. There was no loose connective tissue between the inner and middle shells, so the subendothelial layer was very weak and there was no internal elastic membrane. The muscle membrane was well developed, with collagen and elastic fibers located between the muscle fibers. The outer shell was represented by loose connective tissue with the presence of arterial and venous vessels. The collagen fibers had a slightly convoluted course. Current work was conducted to investigate the histological architecture of the uterine tube and uterus during the period of late pregnancy in rabbits. Twelve adult local breed rabbits were used. The samples from different parts of the uterine tube were prepared for histological study after staining with H&E, Masson’s trichrome and combine Alcian blue (pH2.5)-PAS. The pre ampulla was a narrow tube and its tunica mucosa had slightly long simple mucosal folds lined by pseudostratified columnar epithelium, the ampulla had a wide lumen and its tunica mucosa displayed several highly tall branched mucosal folds with few short simple folds while the isthmus was the narrowest region and its tunica mucosa displayed few of tall and short simple mucosal folds. The mucosa of three parts of the uterine tube was lined by pseudostratified columnar epithelium which is composed of three types of cells: mucous secretory cells, non-secretory cells and basal cells, the mucous secretory cells were the predominant type and revealed secretory activities. The lamina propria-submucosa of the uterine tube was composed of cellular connective tissue and tunica muscularis. The uterus had a very thick wall with well-recognized endometrium and myometrium, the endometrium was composed of many-branched and simple endometrial folds that were covered by multinucleated syncytial cells and simple cuboidal epithelial cells. Lamina propria was composed of loose connective tissue had scattered groups of well growing simple uterine glands that showed secretory activities. The current result showed that the uterus during the late period of pregnancy was differed from those of non-pregnant rabbits, while the uterine tube at late pregnancy has a structure that appeared prepared for the next physiological period.

The features of the structure of the esophagus and its lymphoid tissue of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) have been studied. It is shown that its wall is formed by well expressed mucous, muscular and least developed adventitial (serous in the caudal part) shells. The mucosa forms 7–9 longitudinal folds of leaf-shaped and finger-shaped forms directed into the lumen of the esophagus. It consists of epithelium, lamina propria, lamina muscularis and submucosa. The epithelial layer is represented by a multi-layered flat, weakly keratinizing epithelium and is better developed in the cranial part of this organ. Near the proventriculus, it passes into a single-layered cylindrical. In its lamina propria of the mucosa there are bags of numerous large esophageal glands in which mucus is recorded. Their excretory ducts open onto the surface of the mucosal epithelium. The lamina muscularis is intermittent in places, formed by a smooth muscle tissue. The submucosa is weakly expressed and its own plate is formed by a loose fibrous connective tissue with blood vessels. Between the esophagus glands, their excretory ducts and in the submucosa of the tunica mucosa on the border with the tunica muscular are separate clusters of diffuse lymphoid tissue, which are represented by cells of the lymphoid series without noticeable rarefaction and densities. The basis of the diffuse lymphoid tissue is the reticular tissue, the fibers of which, are densely disposed and do not have a definite orientation and form a small grid. In the area of transition of the esophagus to the proventriculus, the esophageal tonsil, which is inherent in many species of birds, is not expressed. In this area in the mucous membrane, only local accumulations of diffuse lymphoid tissue are recorded. There are no prenodules and lymphoid nodules. The tunica muscular of the esophagus is formed by a smooth muscle tissue, which forms the inner–circular and outer – longitudinal layers. Between them, layers of loose fibrous connective tissue and blood vessels are identified. Tunica adventitia (serosa) are formed by a loose fibrous connective tissue, and serosa is also covered by mesothelium.

     The study includes six adult healthy hen turkey. The cloaca has three compartments separated by two circular folds and next to rectum is the coprodeum which the largest and measured (2.5±0.2cm) in length and (2.1±0.1cm) in diameter. The middle and smallest is the urodeum that measured about (1.01±0.2cm) in length and (1.2±1cm.) in diameter, that receives the ureter and left oviduct. Posteriorly, the proctodeum that measured about (1.4±0.1cm) in length and (1.6±1cm.) in diameter. The coprodeum mucosa has short and flat villi. The urodeum mucosa has tall branching pyramidal mucosal villi. The mucosa of proctodeum has lost the villi pattern. The three compartments were lined with mucous secreting columnar cells, most of these epithelial cells were positive for Alcian blue (2.5pH) stain and few were positive for PAS stain. The epithelial tubular glands showed positive reaction for Alcian blue satin only. The lamina propria of these compartments was cellular loose connective tissue displayed numerous of lymphatic nodules. The muscular mucosa is lost in proctodeum only. Tunica muscular is composed of two layers of smooth muscles fibers in coprodeum and urodeum and turned into skeletal type in proctodeum. The mean height of mucosal villi has significantly increased in urodeum.

The present study was conducted on ten each uropygial glands of 6 to 8 months old healthy Kadaknath and White Leghorn breeds of poultry. The tissue samples were stained by H and E for normal histological structures, Verhoeff’s stain for collagen and elastic fibers, PAS (Periodic Acid Schiff’s) for glycogen and Alcian Blue PAS method for acid mucopolysaccharides. The uropygial gland in Kadaknath and White Leghorn was composed of two lobes. Each lobe had a single duct and these ducts were joined together by isthmus. The thickness of capsule was more in White Leghorn than Kadaknath breed. The lumen of tubules showed higher concentration of secretary product in Kadaknath breed. Numbers of tubules were higher in Kadaknath. No aggregation of lymphocytes was found in the preen gland of White Leghorn, whereas in Kadaknath, there was large number of lymphocytes aggregation alongwith lymphatic nodules. Melanin pigmentation was the characteristic feature of Kadaknath which was found towards the central cavity and in between ductules. The capsule of White Leghorn showed intense PAS activity, while moderate activity was found in Kadaknath breed of poultry. Intense ACPase reaction was noticed in capsule of uropygial gland of Kadaknath and White Leghorn breeds of poultry.


The Angler ( Lophius piscatorius ) is a fish much modified for a bottom habit, and apart from many peculiarities of form and structure associated with this particular mode of life, is remarkable for the looseness of its skin and the abundance of soft connective tissue that separates it from the underlying fascia and muscles. Within this layer of loose connective tissue lie many of the larger trunks of the lymphatic system, mostly of very considerable size and easy to inject. The fish thus furnishes material better than most for the study of this system.
