AbstractWith the knowledge of psychoneuroimmunological responses and the known high stress levels of nursing students, as caring nurse educators, we have become ethically obligated to revise and re-vision our current nursing educational practices. Nurse educators should be motivated to create innovative and radical caring science curricular approaches, so that our nurses of the future are in turn supported in creating caring- healing sustainable bedside practices. This paper details the outcomes from an upper level yoga elective in an RN- BSN program. The course is just one within an innovative holistic-integral nursing curriculum that supports nurses in practicing self-care as a way to support their ability to create caring-healing moments and spaces for patients, implement change in the workplace, and avoid the perils of burn-out related to low stress resilience, which is so common within the nursing profession.

People with a serious mental illness (SMI) along with HIV have complex health conditions. This population also has high rates of poverty, difficulty in sustaining regular housing, and limited supportive networks. Typically, the combination of psychotropic and HIV medication regimens is complicated, changes frequently, and requires coordination among multiple providers. Furthermore, fragmented and divided primary health care and mental health care systems present substantial barriers for these individuals and for the public health nurses who care for them. In this article, we present “real world” case studies of individuals with SMI and HIV and the self-care management strategies used by nurses to address medication and treatment management, build interpersonal skills, and develop sustainable health networks. The case studies can be used for quality improvement discussions among practicing public health nurses and for instructing nursing students in a self-care management approach.

Study Background Nursing students often have high levels of stress leading to negative consequences for academic performance and overall well-being. Novel strategies are needed to help students manage stress. Purpose To explore students’ experiences with an evidence-based intervention—Dialectical Behavior Therapy-Skills Group (DBT-SG). Methods We conducted a mixed-methods study to pilot test a DBT-SG intervention, modified for use with undergraduate nursing students. Qualitative data collected as part of this study included focus groups and written responses on a study questionnaire. Thematic analysis of these data was undertaken to explore how students experienced the intervention. The results of this analysis are reported here. Results Five themes were uncovered: experiencing stress and de-stressing, feeling accepted and validated, acquiring skills, shifting perspectives, and enhanced well-being. Conclusions Our findings suggest that by engaging with DBT-SG, nursing students felt accepted and validated, acquired a variety of skills to cope with stress, as well as developed new perspectives, such as the value of practicing self-care, which contributed to enhanced well-being. Future research could build on these results by further exploring how to best create accepting and validating learning environments where students are encouraged to develop interpersonal relationship skills and enact self-care to further support their well-being and professional development.

This article describes the outcomes of nursing students taking a course in complementary and alternative therapies focusing on energetic modalities that were used as a means of self-care. Students kept journal logs and did a formal presentation for the class. Nursing students reported decreased stress and improved concentration, academic performance, productivity, and problem-solving while experiencing a greater appreciation of their clinical experiences. Using Therapeutic Touch and other subtle energy interactions, the students also cited improved interpersonal relationships, increased feelings of calmness, a higher degree of self-awareness and self-care, reduced physical pain, increased energy, and greater appreciation of the world around them. The theoretical framework was Margret Neuman’s theory of health as expanding consciousness. While this is an elective nursing course, the nursing students were primarily juniors and seniors already taking clinical courses. A research study with a wide sample of student participants, especially freshmen, and using quantitative as well as qualitative measures would be beneficial to determine if such a course should be part of the standard nursing curriculum to not only expand nurses’ understanding of complementary and alternative therapies but also to help students with their own self-care and influence their practice as clinicians.

Abstract   INTRODUCTION: Self-care management has become a theoretical discussion among health professionals and students. As a result of its importance, the International Council for Nurses has incorporated it in their standard of competence. Self-care encourages health and is a fundamental value of the scope and standards of practice. Nursing students are advised to have proper self-care.   METHOD: This study investigated the self-care management practices of nursing students at the Adventist University of the Philippines (AUP) and how they align with the institutional outcomes. This quantitative study conveniently samples 47 nursing students as respondents. The study adopted the Circle of Human Potential ' questionnaire by Dossey and Keegan (2009), which assessed self-care management in the areas of physical, relationship, emotional, spiritual, mental, and choice. The application for SPSS 23 was used for the descriptive and t-test analysis as demanded by the research questions.    RESULTS: The results of the study revealed that there is a positive self-care management attitude among nursing students. The ranked of self-care management from highest to the least in the order of spiritual, mental, emotional, relational, choice, and physical assessments. It further revealed that there was no significant difference in self-care management when considering the sex of the students.   DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATION: The outcomes of the study were in accordance with the AUP institutional outcomes of spirituality, critical thinking, professional expertise, service, health and wellness, and positive attitude. The study recommends that nursing students keep up with their positive self-care management.
