ABSTRACTSuperconducting film of ternary copper oxides from the Y-Ba-Cu-O system has been prepared by screen printing on 96% A1203 substrate with onset temperature at 95K and zero resistance at 85K. X-ray diffraction patterns show that film will react with the A1203 substrate. With decreasing film thickness the superconductivity is destroyed and may become a semiconductor.

Bi1.7-Pb0.3-Sr2-Ca2-Cu3-Ox superconducting samples were prepared at 855°C, 862 C, 870 C, and 882 C sintering temperatures respectively. All samples were sintered for 120 hours. The samples were then quenched in liquid nitrogen. The electrical resistivity measurements showed that the samples sintered at 870° C had the best Tc. For these samples the Tc onset was around 120 K and the zero resistance was obtained at 108 K. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the samples were multiphased.

Two batches of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductors have been prepared. The zero resistance temperature is 90 K with Tc onset at 93 K and 95 K, respectively. Susceptibility measurements show superconducting phase at LN2. X-ray diffraction results indicates single phases.

Two batches of Er-Ba-Cu-O superconductors have been prepared. The zero resistance temperature is 86 K with T c onsets at 99 K and 92 K respectively. Susceptibility measurements show superconducting phase at LN 2. X-ray diffraction results indicates two phases, the superconducting being the major one.

AbstractBy using N2O for oxygen source, Y‐Ba‐Cu‐O films prepared at 650” C on the SrTiO3 substrates showed zero resistance at 79K. The deposition rate of Y‐Ba‐Cu‐0 films on MgO(l00) substrates by using N2O gas was nearly half of that using 02 gas. X‐ray diffraction patterns of Y‐Ba‐Cu‐0 films grown on SrTiO3(100) and MgO(l00) substrates indicate c‐axis orientation.

AbstractWe have prepared highly textured superconducting thin films from Bi1.5pb0.5Ca3Sr2Cu4Ox (2324) on (100) YS-ZrO2 (Yttria stabilized zirconia) and Bi1.5Pb0.5Ca2Sr2Cu3°x (2223) on LaAlC-3 (100) and MgO (100) substrates at 650°C by pulsed laser ablation method. These films showed 2212 type of phase of the (BiPb)2(Ca,Sr)n+1CunO2n+4+5 family with onset transition temperature ( Tc ) ~ 110 K, confirming our earlier observations of 110 K superconductivity in a n = 2 bulk material. Thin films deposited from 2324 bulk target on YS-Z1O2 showed zero resistance temperature (Tco ) of 68 K but post annealing for one hour at 400°C in oxygen improved Tco from 68 K to 82 K. Thin films from 2223 target on LaAlO3 ( 100 ) and MgO ( 100 ) exhibited a Tco of 65 K and 74 K respectively while onset remained the same at 110 K. Further annealing at 400°C for one hour in oxygen did not show any improvement in Tco. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Rutherford backscattering (RBS) channeling studies were performed on these films for correlation between crystal structure, microstructure and superconducting properties. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated 2212 type phase with a= 5.39 Å and c=30.76 Å; preferential orientation of c-axis perpendicular to the substrate was observed. The lattice parameter and x-ray diffraction patterns were found to be invariant with annealing treatments.

AbstractHigh Tc superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 films have been prepared by the Liquid Phase Epitaxial (LPE) technique. The x‐ray diffraction patterns displayed a high degree of (00l) preferred orientations with c‐axes perpendicular to the film surfaces. The in‐situ grown YBa2Cu3O7 films showed zero‐resistivity at 76*K. Examination of the film cross sections by SEM revealed a growth mechanism.

ABSTRACTHigh-Tc superconducting Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu oxide with zero resistance temperature at above lOOK has been synthesized via the use of ethylenediamine-tetra-acetate(EDTA) colloid and corresponding metal nitrates. Remarkable sinterability of the precursor requires shorter time to achieve superconducting phases than conventional solid-state reactions. Superconducting properties were measured electrically and magnetically. The thermal decomposition, X-ray diffraction and microstructural characteristics of the precursor and the sintered samples were also discussed.

Laser Heated Pedestal Growth (LHPG) technique has many advantages, such as crucible-free, no contamination, steep temperature gradients, high density and low defects, etc. for preparing the high Tc oxide superconductor fibers with high transport critical current density due to the floating zone melting and textured structure. For incongruently melt compounds, the technique is probably the best available for growing homogeneous crystals of these materials and was successfully used for making Y and Bi system fibers in Stanford University, IMR and MIT.The HREM investigation was carried out on the grainboundaries situation which plays an important role in reducing the weak links and enhancing the current transporting ability. The as-grown crystals are 0.5-1.5mm in diameters. X-ray diffraction patterns on plane films showed the textured structures with a-b plane parallel to the growth axis both in Y and Bi system compounds. Fig.1 shows the aligned structures in asgrown crystal of BSCCO.

The successful synthesis of high-Tc YBa2Cu3O7 films by means of electron-beam codeposition are reported. Several important growth parameters have been surveyed in a preliminary way. The substrates investigated include Al2O3, ZrO2, MgO, and SrTiO3, The films were characterized by resistivity measurements, x-ray diffraction, microprobe, and Rutherford backscattering analysis. Some TEM and critical current density studies were also carried out. The best results to date have been obtained on SrTiO3 substrates with which polycrystalline epitaxial growth has been achieved. Resistive superconducting transitions with zero resistance at 89.5 K and a 2 K width have been observed in these films.
