The present work investigated the corrosion protection performance of ions Ce3+ activated-cerium(IV) oxides nanoparticles for carbon steel in a NaCl solution. Ceria nanoparticles were synthesized by homogeneous precipitation in ethanol/water mixed solvent. The obtained CeO2 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The corrosion inhibition action of the activated nanoparticles by cerium(III) ions on carbon steel in NaCl solution was evaluated by electrochemical measurements (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization). Then, the effect of cerium salt activated-CeO2 on the protection properties of poly-vinyl-butyral (PVB) coating deposited onto carbon steel plate was studied by salt spray test. The obtained results showed that the salt activated-nanoparticles are anodic corrosion inhibitors. The presence of Ce3+ activated CeO2 in the coating improved the barrier properties and corrosion protection performance of the PVB coating. No swellings of coating were observed after 48 hours of exposure in salt spray chamber.

In this study, imidazole derivative-based new ionic liquids were investigated as corrosion inhibitors. These new ionic liquids (ILs) are 1,3-dipropyl-2-(2-propoxyphenyl)-4,5-diphenylimidazole iodide (IL1) and 1,3-dibutyl-2-(2-butoxyphenyl)-4,5-diphenylimidazole iodide (IL2). The corrosion inhibition effects of two new ILs were observed on carbon steel in brackish water media (1% NaCl solution). Carbon steel coupons were exposed to 1% NaCl solution with various concentrations of ILs. Corrosion inhibition effects were tested by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method and the Tafel method at various temperatures ranging from 25 °C to 55 °C. The results showed that ILs have potential as corrosion inhibitors and the adsorption mechanisms of IL1 and IL2 on carbon steel surfaces were also determined, which followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Acquisition of ∆Gads values of IL1 and IL2 were −35.04 and −34.04 kJ/mol, respectively. The thermodynamic data of the ILs show that semi-chemical and or physical adsorptions occurred on carbon steel surfaces.

The presence work investigates the corrosion protection of waterborne epoxy coatings containing CeO2 nanoparticles activated with cerium salt for the carbon steel substrates. First, the dispersion of activated nanoparticles in the epoxy matrix was observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was carried out to evaluate the role of the activated-CeO2 nanoparticles in the organic coatings immersed in a 0.5 M NaCl solution. Thus, the effect of the cerium ion activated ceria nanoparticles on the coatings presented the artificial defect in the aggressive environment was examined via salt spray test. Complementary studies were performed using the cross-cut and pull-off test to assess the adherence properties of the samples. Results revealed that the presence of activated-CeO2 nanoparticles enhanced corrosion protection properties of waterborne epoxy coating without losing adherence properties.

The corrosion protection and antifouling properties of varnish-coated steel panels containing different amounts of cannabis extracts were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), salt spray and immersion tests in 0.5 M NaCl solution and subjected to a field test in seawater. Analysis of the experimental data showed that the presence of cannabis extract resisted the deterioration (peeling off) tendency of the varnish-coated steel panels exposed to aggressive environments. Visual inspection showed that the cannabis extract also provided good antifouling properties.

nanoZrO2 was modified by styrene coupling grafting method and then used as an additive to improve the protective performance of epoxy coating. Two kinds of coatings, neat epoxy coating and nanoZrO2/epoxy coating, were prepared and applied on Q235 carbon steel plates. The plates were submitted to salt spray chamber and seawater immersion for 1000 hours to evaluate the corrosion protection performance for these two kinds of coatings. Tafel polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were determined to analyze the corrosion behavior of coating/metal system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photographs were carried out for morphology analysis of two kinds of coatings under different conditions. Results showed a superior stability and efficient corrosion protection by nanoZrO2 /epoxy coating. The modified nanoZrO2 could inhibit the penetration of corrosive media and then improve the corrosion protection of the epoxy coating on carbon steel.

Water-based Polyaniline(PANI) emulsion and Fluorocarbon(FC) emulsion were synthesized by emulsion polymerization method. The doped polyanline were characterized by Transmission electron microscope(TEM) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). The results showed the PANI has bar-like shape and local crystallinity. The composite anticorrosion coatings of PANI emulsion and FC emulsion were prepared by mixture in aqueous medium and used for corrosion protection of mild steel. The corrosion protection property of PANI/FC coatings on mild steel was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and open circuit potential(OCP) technique in 3.5wt%NaCl aqueous solution. The results indicated that the water-based PANI/FC coatings could offer high protection because the impedance values and corrosion potential remained at higher. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) showed that the oxidation film formed on the metal surface and prevent corrosion effectively due to the passive effect of PANI pigment. The anticorrosion coatings are environmental friendly because of water dispersion medium.

AbstractThis study reports a facile method to prepare silica-coated graphene oxide nanoflakes (SiO2–GO). Results of X-ray diffraction analysis, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy reveal that silica was successfully coated on the GO flakes. The effect of SiO2–GO nanosheets on the corrosion protection and barrier performance of the epoxy coating was investigated in this work. Results indicate that the mechanical properties of all coatings added with GO and SiO2–GO were significantly improved. Furthermore, electrochemical impedance and Tafer polarisation curves showed that added 0.5 wt% SiO2–GO nanoflakes into zinc-rich epoxy coating could greatly improve the anti-corrosion performance of the sample, and the corrosion protection efficiency increased from 67.01 to 99.58%.

Purpose The purpose of this paper was to research the influence of polyaniline/montmorillonite (PANI/OMMT) composite powder content on the corrosion protection of epoxy (EP) coating. Design/methodology/approach The polyaniline/montmorillonite/epoxy (PANI/OMMT/EP) coatings containing different contents of PANI/OMMT composite powder were prepared on steel. The corrosion protection performances of PANI/OMMT/EP coatings in 3.5 per cent NaCl solutions were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The barrier property of coatings was examined using water absorption analysis. The structure and crosslink density of coatings were examined using scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Findings The PANI/OMMT composite powder could enhance the barrier properties of the EP coating and reduce the corrosion rate of the steel beneath the coating. The coating showed the best corrosion protection performance when 3 per cent PANI/OMMT powder was added to the coating. Originality/value The research clarified the influence of PANI/OMMT content on the corrosion protection of coating from two aspects: one is the barrier performance of the coating; the other is the corrosion inhibitors for metal substrate.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations demand for an expedient discovery of a Cr(VI)-free alternative corrosion protection for light alloys even though the green alternatives might never be as cheap as current harmful technologies. In the present work, flash- plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings (FPEO) with the process duration < 90 s are developed on AZ31B alloy in varied mixtures of silicate-, phosphate-, aluminate-, and fluoride-based alkaline electrolytes implementing current density and voltage limits. The overall evaluation of the coatings’ anticorrosion performance (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), neutral salt spray test (NSST), paintability) shows that from nine optimized FPEO recipes, two (based on phosphate, fluoride, and aluminate or silicate mixtures) are found to be an adequate substitute for commercially used Cr(VI)-based conversion coating (CCC). The FPEO coatings with the best corrosion resistance consume a very low amount of energy (~1 kW h m−2 µm−1). It is also found that the lower the energy consumption of the FPEO process, the better the corrosion resistance of the resultant coating. The superb corrosion protection and a solid environmentally friendly outlook of PEO-based corrosion protection technology may facilitate the economic justification for industrial end-users of the current-consuming process as a replacement of the electroless CCC process.

Few-layered MoS2 nanostructures were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method without the addition of any catalysts or surfactants. Their morphology, structure and photocatalytic activity were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectra and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, respectively. These results show that the MoS2 nanostructures synthesized at 180[Formula: see text]C exhibit an optimal visible light photocatalytic activity (99%) in the degradation of Rhodamine B owing to the relatively easier adsorption of pollutants, higher visible light absorption and lower electron–hole pair recombination.
