Most studies on citizenship have only focus on the practice of citizenship in the context of formal state institutions. On the other hand, there are relatively few studies discussing citizenship practices in informal institutions. Therefore, this study examines the practice of citizenship in Islamic boarding schools/pesantren in the form of bonds as jamaah. This article intends to map the operation of pesantren as a binder of social ties between its citizens, as well as the pattern of relations between kiai and santri. This research shows that pesantren acts as lebenschraum habitus which installs the perceptions and expressions of its citizens. Pesantren is also a locus of power that has a significant influence on political and civic practices. As a locus of power, there is symbolic capital which is represented and reproduced continuously so that the symbolic capital produces economic, social, and cultural capital. The surplus of capital owned by the lora enables them to transform from the habitus of pesantren, to the habitus of political society and the state through the mechanism of electoral democracy.  Even though the pesantren  with all their supporting elements have a clientelistic relationship pattern, there is a public morality that can be transformed to strengthen the democratization agenda in the future.

The social-cultural approach to economic modernization processes is studied in the article. It states that the specific country-based modernization formula is required for the successful modernization policy, which takes into consideration the informal rules of the concrete country and is based on the competitive advantages coming from the characteristics of social and cultural capital. This approach, being implemented to study Russia and Kazakhstan cases, allows to make some important conclusions: first, about the connection between long-term macroeconomic trends and features of the informal institutions; second, about the opportunity to define general directions for the modernization policy; third, about the possibility to design concrete normative structures based on specific features of social and cultural capital.

The most common image of the European Quarter of Brussels is built on the idea of a clean, free, safe and controlled space that attracts people with high economic, social and cultural capital, and a growing number of "passing" users (tourists or consumers). Against this background, our research aimed to investigate the nexus between the material, symbolic, normative and discursive construction of the EU district time-space, on one hand, and everyday life, on the other. To do so, we explored the potential of a rhythmic and nonrepresentational approach in deconstructing dominant socio-spatial-temporal representations, scraping off the layers of the commonly-known to unveil alternative chronotopes. In this article, we present and discuss a reinterpretation of our experience and discuss the results of our analysis through four chronotopes linked to the spatio-temporal rhythms we observed, rhythms we have called Public time-space, Interstices, Intersections and Traces-as-remains.

This article draws on interviews with 43 Airbnb hosts in Greater Boston to analyze how this novel economic arrangement brings people together across difference. The first central finding is that a majority of the participants express a keen interest in engaging with the Other, by hosting guests of foreign nationalities and cultures, but they also filter for familiar characteristics. This paradox is conceptualized as a preference for the ‘comfortably exotic’ – hosts want difference, but not too much of it. The second central finding is that guest–host interactions generate cosmopolitan capital, i.e., particular forms of social and cultural capital, which suggests that exclusion from the home-sharing economy has opportunity costs on not just economic dimensions, but also on cultural and social dimensions.

This research examines the habitus creation in the neighborhood of Al-Amin which is located at Banjar Sanglah, Denpasar City. This neighborhood evidently is able to actualize the inter-religious harmony since 1970 until now. In the related study, the concept of habitus from Pierre Bourdieu with formulation (Habitus x Capital) + Field = Practice was applied, while adopted the ethnography method. Through the conducted study, Bourdieu’s concept of habitus was able to explain the cognitive structure of various actors who play an essential role in the creation of the Al-Amin neighborhood, starting from the system of symbolic capital disposition, social capital, economic capital and cultural capital. Furthermore, the continuous harmony in the neighborhood of Al-Amin is due to its strong social and cultural capital. However, the harmony is inseparable from the framework between majority with minority, thus the character of social capital and especially the cultural capital in the neighborhood of Al-Amin tend to coopt other forms of capital.

With nearly three million Sri Lankans living overseas, across the world, there is a significant role that can be played by this constituency in post-conflict reconciliation.  This paper will highlight the lessons learnt from a process facilitated by International Alert (IA) and led by the author, working to engage proactively with the diaspora on post-conflict reconciliation in Sri Lanka.  The paper shows that for any sustainable impact, it is also critical that opportunities are provided to diaspora members representing the different communities of the country to interact and develop horizontal relations, whilst also ensuring positive vertical relations with the state. The foundation of such effective engagement strategies is trust-building. Instilling trust and gaining confidence involves the integration of the diaspora into the national framework for development and reconciliation. This will allow them to share their human, social and cultural capital, as well as to foster economic growth by bridging their countries of residence and origin.
