Seeking to offer more than just words of comfort in the face of suffering, this paper proposes three additional ways forward for theological reflection during the COVID-19 pandemic: (1) a rediscovery of the language of lament, drawing on the vocabularies of protest movements and the Psalms; (2) a theological critique of the pandemic built on reckoning with the reality of our finitude and the relationship between humanity and the earth; and (3) a re-imagination of the future employing the power of the arts and the imagination for this prophetic task.

We experience around us situations of violence, pain, suffering, and injustice. Some of these experiences often leave individual and/or communal memories hurt in many different ways. The consequence is that when these hurt memories live with us they begin to shape our identity and selfhood from the perspective of wounded persons. Overlooking these experiences or burying them to amnesia can lead to the denial of what we are truly called to be. Remembering well these memories with hope for a better future in the presence of the risen Lord would be a source of healing for both individuals and communities. This essay posits liturgy as the means by which we can re-member the past to the present and so look to the future with hope of healing. This is so because liturgy has the capacity to bring the participants in the ritual to the past event as a present encounter. Through symbols, gestures, words, songs, and materials used in the ritual, in a concrete manner the participants receive what they are ritualizing in reality. In this way liturgy can give a body to memory, say what words cannot master to say, and to hope for what would be hopeless: healing of hurt memories. This is a theological reflection on the relationship between liturgy and healing of hurt memories through the path of forgiveness. It posits that through liturgy, forgiveness can be given a body and so through forgiveness the Church can offer new life in the face of horrifying hurt memories.

The youth is said to be the future of the nation upon which the destiny of the country depends to a large extent. Most of the students during adolescence suffer from frustrations, conflicts, complexes, anxieties and worries. They experience problems in physical, mental, social, emotional and other adjustments. Since, it is encountered by students during psychologically disturbing and difficult years of their adolescence; it is consequently major mental experience for most of them. However, whatever is needed is an understanding of their adjustment problems and thereby seeking the solution of those problems. Therefore, it becomes an important area of studying their adjustment problems. This study has been taken to know the relationship between emotional intelligence and social adjustment in adolescents because emotional intelligence includes traits like self-awareness, social deftness, and the ability to delay gratification, to be optimistic in the face of adversity, to channel strong emotions and show empathy towards others. It involves recognition, use, understanding and management of one’s and others emotional state to solve problems and regulate behavior.

Images and practices of relations, aliveness, and love provide a way to reconcile knowledge and its schooled pursuit with the wisdom required in our current, ecologically desperate times. This desperation is rooted, in part, in threads of the efficiency movement that were inherited by education in the early 1900s and left schools with a curriculum legacy that has become exhausted and counterproductive. This inheritance can be countered with ideas from the traditions of hermeneutics and ecological thought. But they are also countered with life-affirming and life-sustaining Cree ideas: wahkohtowin, wicihitowin, and sakihitowin. Practicing these ideas can help align work inside and outside schools with the characteristic spirit (ethos) of our earthly being, and can provide the grounds for a pointed critique of, and alternative to, the regnant regimes of contemporary schooling. wahkohtowin means, briefly put, “all things are related/all things are our relations” and wicihitowin refers to “the life-giving energy that is generated when people face each other as relatives and build trusting relationships by connecting with others in respectful ways.” sakihitowin means “love.” Reimagining curriculum as constituted by living fields of relations while also considering not only the energeia, the “aliveness” that is generated in the face-to-face care of and learning the ways of such living fields, but also the deep affection that is both needed for and produced by such reimagining, increases the prospects of our ecological future and the future of the more-than-human world.

This book explores the nature, value, and role of hope in human life under conditions of oppression. Oppression is often a threat and damage to hope, yet many members of oppressed groups, including prominent activists pursuing a more just world, find hope valuable and even essential to their personal and political lives. This book offers a unique evaluative framework for hope that captures the intrinsic value of hope for many of us, the rationality and morality of hope, and ultimately how we can hope well in the non-ideal world we share. It develops an account of the relationship between hope and anger about oppression and argues that anger tends to be accompanied by hopes for repair. When people’s hopes for repair are not realized, as is often the case for those who are oppressed, anger can evolve into bitterness: a form of unresolved anger involving a loss of hope that injustice will be sufficiently acknowledged and addressed. But even when all hope might seem lost or out of reach, faith can enable resilience in the face of oppression. Spiritual faith, faith in humanity, and moral faith are part of what motivates people to join in solidarity against injustice, through which hope can be recovered collectively. Joining with others who share one’s experiences or commitments for a better world and uniting with them in collective action can restore and strengthen hope for the future when hope might otherwise be lost.

Recent art history studies have delved into notions of futurity as it relates to indigenous approaches to environmental destruction in the face of ongoing colonial oppression. Building on the concept of indigenous futures, the present investigation focuses on the Kichwa artist Manuel Amaru Cholango’s decolonial critique of technology. Since the 1990s and in response to the quincentennial celebration of the “discovery” of America in 1992, Cholango has developed an oeuvre that criticizes the instrumentalization of modern technology for the exploitation of the earth and the perpetuation of colonialism. By advancing the notion of Andean technology, Cholango brings to bear other ways of relating to the environment that can help create, once again, the possibility of the future.

Viacheslav Ivanov (1866, Moscow–1949, Rome) is one of the most prominent Russian symbolist poets and a leading theorist of symbolism at the beginning of the twentieth century. The article demonstrates that Ivanov understood art (and, more broadly, aesthetic experience) as one of the most effective forms of contact between the human being and the spiritual world, as well as with its first cause. Ivanov distinguishes between three “aesthetic principles” of the universe, which all together constitute “the beautiful”—the sublime, beauty, and the chaotic—and links them to the three stages of being of the artist in the process of creative activity. The artist first passes through the chthonian, subconscious stage of demonic chaos. Next, artists undergo the process of ascent into the ideal, spiritual sphere, where they gain experience, which cannot be expressed in words. After that, the process of the descent of the artist towards the earth takes place, where artists attempt to express in the form of artistic symbols the experience that they have acquired. Ivanov sees the artistic symbol as a materially given structure, which nevertheless cannot be described in words. This structure not only expresses a spiritual essence, but also really and energetically manifests it. Hence, Ivanov sees the creator of high, symbolic art (“realist symbolism”) as an artist-theurge (theurgy is the art of the future, of the future mystery on the basis of a synthesis of the arts that receives divine assistance), who contributes to the augmentation of being. For the recipient, the artistic symbol is anagogical (from the Greek ἀναγογή, “leading up”). It leads one up from the real world to a more real one (a realibus ad realiora). According to Ivanov, both the symbol and its content, myth, are of divine origin; they are “embodiments of the divine truth.” Therefore, high art is one of the principal ways of one’s ascent to spiritual reality by means of sensory reality.

In 1785 a writer who used the pen name “Celadon” (singer) tried to clarify the meaning of regions in America by making them one with ethnic groups. The author of the small pamphlet The Golden Age; or, Future Glory of North-America Discovered by an Angel to Celadon in Several Entertaining Visions contemplated the future of America from a mountain overlooking the whole continent. He describes himself in a state of rapture whenthe Angel recalled my attention by a gentle touch on my side, and pointing his finger a little to the south-west, Celadon, says he, do you see yonder long valley. … That whole region you may call Savagenia: It being designed for the future habitation of your now troublesome Indians. — And that other valley. … It lies toward the north-west … This you may call Nigrania: It being allotted for the Negroes to dwell there, when the term of their vassalage is come to a period. — And in all those vast spaces westward to the great ocean, there may be seats hereafter for sundry foreign nations. — There may be a French, a Spanish, a Dutch, an Irish, an English, &c. yea, a Jewish State here in process of time. — And all of them united in brotherly affection, will at last form the most potent empire on the face of the earth (pp. 11–12).

Abstract Victorian studies emerged, like many interdisciplinary fields, during the 1950s and 1960s. While scholars today accept the validity of interdisciplinary work, it was not always so, and early issues of Victorian Studies and the Victorian Periodicals Newsletter reflect both scholars’ excitement over the prospect of interdisciplinary work and their hesitation in the face of an “untamed wilderness.” The same forces that gave rise to Victorian studies had their equivalent on Capitol Hill with passage of the National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities Act of 1965. This essay explores the relationship between the emerging field of Victorian studies and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The debates and methodological discussions that shaped the founding of the field left scholars well positioned to take advantage of opportunities offered by the Endowment. NEH-supported projects such as Walter Houghton’s Wellesley Index shaped Victorian studies in profound ways, and Victorian studies, in turn, helped shape the Endowment.

Abstract(IT).- Il contributo descrive la teoria dei sistemi come una teoria ecologica dei movimenti ecologisti, capace di radicalizzare il rapporto tra sistema e ambiente e di superare i limiti epistemologici di ogni prospettiva antropocentrica e appropriativa della natura. Il movimento No Tap, costituitosi nel Salento per opporsi alla costruzione di un gasdotto finanziato dall’Unione Europea, viene osservato come un caso paradigmatico delle forme moderne di disciplinamento giuridico-amministrativo del conflitto, delle tecniche di immunizzazione della protesta. Verrà quindi affrontata la questione arendtiana del rapporto tra disobbedienza e diritto, interrogandosi sulla funzione dei procedimenti giuridici nei confronti della protesta e su come il diritto possa o meno trattare il rischio, cioè il non-sapere del futuro. How law observes disobedience Abstract (EN).-The contribution describes the theory of systems as an ecological theory of ecological movements, capable of radicalizing the relationship between the system and the environment and overcoming the epistemological limits of every anthropocentric and appropriative perspective of nature. The No Tap movement, established in Salento to oppose the construction of a gas pipeline financed by the European Union, is seen as a paradigmatic case of the modern forms of legal and administrative regulation of the conflict, of the immunization techniques of the protest. The Arendt’s question of the relationship between disobedience and law will then be addressed, questioning the function of legal proceedings against the protest and how the legal system can treat the risk, that is the ignorance of the future.
