In "dry" crop season, common bean yield is lower and it can be attributed in large part to the water deficit during its cycle. The use of supplemental irrigation can be an alternative to overcome this stress and increase grain yield. The objective of this study was to quantify the impact of water stress in "dry" season common bean and the irrigation depth required to mitigate this stress, using the CSM-CROPGRO-Dry bean simulation model. The model was calibrated and evaluated against observed data set for Pérola cultivar. Grain yield for six sowing dates (10/1, 20/01, 30/1, 10/2, 20/2, and 28/2) and three soil classes (Oxisol, Ultisol, and Inceptisol) were simulated considering growth under rainfall and growth with supplemental irrigation, using daily climatic data of 26 weather stations in Goiás for the period of 33 years. The relative impact of water deficit, estimated by the grain yield gap in both cases, was 48%. Soil classes had low impact on average values of irrigation depth required as well as on irrigated grain yield. Na safra da “seca”, com semeadura de 01/01 a 28/02, a produtividade do feijoeiro é menor e pode ser atribuída, em grande parte, a ocorrência de deficiência hídrica durante o seu ciclo. O uso de irrigação suplementar pode ser uma alternativa para superar esse estresse e incrementar a produtividade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar o impacto da deficiência hídrica no feijão da “seca” e a lâmina de irrigação requerida para mitigar essa deficiência, utilizando o modelo de simulação CSM-CROPGRO-Dry bean. O modelo foi calibrado e validado por meio da comparação de dados observados e simulados para a cultivar Pérola. Foram simuladas a produtividade para seis datas de semeadura (10/1, 20/01, 30/1, 10/2, 20/2 e 28/2) e três classes de solo (Latossolo, Cambissolo e Argissolo), considerando o crescimento sob precipitação pluvial ou com o uso da irrigação suplementar, utilizando dados climáticos diários de 26 estações meteorológicas de Goiás para o período de 33 anos. O impacto relativo da deficiência hídrica, estimado pela diferença de produtividade nas duas situações, foi de 48%. As classes de solo tiveram pouco impacto na lâmina media requerida como também na produtividade irrigada. A lâmina média de irrigação requerida aumenta com o avanço da data de semeadura, variando de 70 a 157 mm, e a produtividade decresce de 3.813 a 3.510 kg ha-1. Palavras-chave: Phaseolus vulgaris, deficiência hídrica, modelo de simulação.

White mold (WM) caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary is the most devastating disease of common bean (dry and snap or garden bean) (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in North America. The use of a reliable screening method (SM) in common bean is crucial to improve physiological resistance to WM. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of three SM to identify physiological resistance in dry bean genotypes with different evolutionary origins and levels of resistance. Screening methods tested were: (i) the modified straw test or cut–stem (CSM); (ii) infected bean flower (IFL); and (iii) infected oat seed (IOS). A 195, ICA Bunsi, Othello, and VCW 54 dry bean were tested with the three SM. The experimental design was a split plot in randomized complete blocks with three replications in 2007 and 2008. Two independent inoculations 1 wk apart for each SM were made. The WM reaction was scored at 16, 23, and 33 d post-inoculation (DPI) using a 1 to 9 scale. There were highly significant differences between SM and its interaction with years. The CSM and IFL were the most consistent and highly correlated (r > 0.70, P < 0.01). Interspecific breeding line VCW 54 consistently had the highest WM resistance across years, SM, and evaluation dates, followed by A 195. White mold scores increased with delayed evaluations. Thus, CSM or IFL with disease assessed 33 DPI should be used for identifying common bean genotypes with high levels of physiological resistance to WM.Key words: Common bean, growth habit, race Mesoamerica, race Nueva Granada, Phaseolus vulgaris, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

An experiment was carried out with common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) in a Red Yellow Latossol, sandy phase, in order to study the influence of foliar spraying of the Hanway nutrient solution (NPKS) at grain filling stage on: 1) grain yield; 2) the uptake of fertilizer and soil nitrogen by this crop through the root system and 3) the efficiency of utilization of the nitrogen in the foliar spray solution by the grain. The results of this experiment showed that the foliar application of the Hanway solution with ammonium nitrate at the pod filling period caused severe leaf burn and grain yield was inferior to that of the plants which received a soil application of this fertilizer at the same stage. These facts can be attributed to the presence of ammonium nitrate in the concentration used. The composition of final spray was: 114,28 Kg NH4NO3 + 43,11 Kg potassium poliphosphate + 12,44 Kg potassium sulphate per 500 litres. The uptake of nitrogen fertilizer through the root system and the efficiency of its utilization was greater than that through the leaves.

Two common bean cultivars were grown in pots under greenhouse conditions. Plants were submitted to a foliar Pi spray two days before suspending irrigation, what enhanced net CO2 assimilation rate of Ouro Negro cultivar but did not change significantly the photosynthesis of Carioca cultivar under both water deficit and rehydration periods. The results revealed that a foliar Pi spray induced an up-regulation of photosynthesis in common bean under mild water deficit, with this effect being genotype-dependent.

The current research was intended to comprehend hypoglycemic and anti-lipidaemic exercises of hydrated common bean (phaseolus Vulgaris L.) seed extracts on streptozotocin-induced diabetic albino rats. At a set portion fluctuate of 100, 200,300 mg/kg body weight of common bean extracts was orally directed as one portion for every day to polygenic disorder rats for a measure of thirty days. The impact of P.vulgaris L. on hypoglycemic, glycosylated hemoprotein (HbA1c) and blood serum lipid profile (Total cholesterin), Triglyceride (TG), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), High-density lipoprotein (HDL)) in plasma were estimated in the regular and diabetic induced rat. The outcomes demonstrated that quick glucose,serum TC, TG, LDL, VLDL, levels were significantly (p<0.05) attenuate, while blood serum HDL, the level was extensively (p<0.05) upgraded inside the diabetic rats. The inconclusive amount of pace of 300 mg/kg is more reasonable than that of a hundred mg/kg. Our examination so shows that Phaseolus vulgaris L has a powerful adversary to diabetic and anti-lipidaemic impacts on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, and results were comparable to reference drug glibenclamide.

A necessidade de conhecer a marcha de absorção do nitrogênio (N) pelo feijoeiro é importante para compreender os desempenhos produtivo e qualitativo dessa cultura.  O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência da cobertura nitrogenada em função de diferentes estádios fenológicos no desempenho morfoagronômico e produtivo e nas características tecnológicas dos grãos do feijoeiro em sistema de plantio convencional. Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por doze combinações de fornecimento de N (FN) em cobertura (dose total = 90 kg ha-1 de N) aplicadas nos estádios fenológicos V3, V4 e R5 (V3+V4+R5) do feijoeiro de inverno irrigado: 00+00+00; 30+30+30; 30+60+00; 30+00+60; 60+30+00; 00+60+30; 45+45+00; 00+45+45; 45+00+45; 90+00+00; 00+90+00; e 00+00+90. A fonte de N utilizada foi ureia convencional. Os FN 30+00+60, 00+45+45 e 45+00+45 incrementam a produtividade de grãos e a eficiência agronômica em relação à ausência de N e à aplicação de dose única no estádio fenológico V4. do feijoeiro comum. As maiores produtividades de proteína bruta e o menor tempo para cozimento foram proporcionadas pelos FN 00+45+45, 45+00+45, 90+00+00, 00+90+00 e 00+00+90.Palavras-chave: Phaseolus vulgaris; parcelamento do N; eficiência agronômica; tecnologia dos grãos. NITROGEN TOPDRESSING AT DIFFERENT PHENOLOGICAL STAGES ON COMMON BEAN CHANGES GRAIN YIELD AND QUALITY ABSTRACT: The need to know the nitrogen uptake (N) by common bean is important to understand the productive and qualitative performance of this crop. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of nitrogen topdressing as a function of different phenological stages on the morphometric and productive performance, and on the technological characteristics of the bean grains grown under conventional soil preparation. A randomized block design with four replications was used. The treatments were constituted by twelve topdressing N supply combinations (NS) (total dose = 90 kg ha-1 N) applied in the phenological stages V3, V4 and R5 (V3+V4+R5) of irrigated winter bean: 00+00+00; 30+30 +30; 30+60+00; 30+00+60; 60 + 30 + 00; 00+60+30; 45+45+00; 00+45+45; 45+00+45; 90+00+00; 00+90+00; and 00+00+90. The source of N used was conventional urea. NS 30 + 00 + 60, 00 + 45 + 45 and 45 + 00 + 45 increase grain yield and agronomic efficiency in relation to the absence of N and single dose application at V4 phenological stage of common bean. The highest crude protein yields and the shortest cooking time were provided by FN 00+45+45, 45+00+45, 90+00+00, 00+90+00 and 00+00+90.Keywords: Phaseolus vulgaris; N splitting; agronomic efficiency; grains technology.

Among light red and dark red kidney common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) varieties, pink seedcoat color (light red kidney) is dominant to dark red, but when Red Mexican varieties (with dark red seedcoats) are crossed with dark red kidney varieties, dark red seedcoat is dominant to the pink segregants observed in an F2 population. A genetic investigation of this reversal of dominance was performed by making crosses in all combinations among standard varieties of the four recessive-red market classes—Light Red Kidney `California Early Light Red Kidney', Pink `Sutter Pink', Red Mexican `NW 63', and Dark Red Kidney `Montcalm'—and observing segregation for seedcoat colors in F2 and F3 progenies. The data were consistent with the hypothesis that `NW 63' carries a new allele at Rk, viz., rkcd, where cd stands for convertible dark red kidney. Thus, C rkcd expresses dark red kidney seedcoats and cu rkcd expresses pink seedcoats. Also, C B rkcd expresses garnet brown seedcoats, whereas C B rkd expresses liver brown seedcoat color. Thus, we propose the gene symbol rkcd for the Rk locus gene in `NW 63'. The rk gene from Light Red Kidney `Redkloud' and `Sutter Pink' was backcrossed (with cu b v) into the recurrent parent 5-593, a Florida dry bean breeding line with seedcoat genotype P [C r] J G B V Rk. In the F2 progenies of BC2 to 5-593, the cu b v rk segregants from `Redkloud' gave true pink seedcoats, whereas those derived from `Sutter Pink' gave consistently very weak pink color under humid Florida growing conditions. We propose the gene symbol rkp, where p stands for pale pink, for the distinctive rk allele in `Sutter Pink'. The more general implications of the above findings were discussed.

Alert is a high-yielding, semi-erect great northern common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivar. It was developed from a series of crosses at the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT), Cali, Colombia, on contract to the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Research Centre, Lethbridge, with cooperation from the AAFC Morden Research Station. Alert is well adapted to the eastern Canadian prairies, yielding significantly higher than the check cultivar, US1140, at 130% in the official Manitoba Dry Bean Co-operative Registration Trials. Alert is moderately resistant to white mold and resistant to races 1 and 15 of bean common mosaic virus (BCMV). It is susceptible to the alpha and alpha Brazil races of anthracnose, but resistant to the delta race. ABSTRACT: The objective of this work was to conduct a temporal evaluation of incidence of rot base and sanitary severity, and to relate the impact on the seed pathology of common bean cultivars. In the 2015-2016 harvest, in the city of Ipameri, Goiás, ten cultivars of common bean were evaluated (BRS Estilo©, BRS Pérola©, IPR Tangará©, IPR Tuiuiú©, IPR Uirapuru©, IAC Milênio©, Imperador©, IAC F3 R2©, IAC OTG© and IPR Campos Gerais©) and distributed into five blocks, totaling 40 experimental units. The incidence of wilt and base rot and sanitary severity were analyzed by taking ten random samples per block at 21, 28, 56, 63 and 69 days after planting. At the end of 120 days, a total of 20 plants were harvested per cultivar, and 250 seeds were harvested for application of the Blotter Test method. From 21 to 69 days after planting, the cultivars BRS Pérola© and IPR Campos Gerais© deserve to be highlighted for presenting the lowest incidence of wilt in the reproductive and vegetative cycles. The cultivar BRS Pérola© showed the lowest incidence of wilt and sanitary severity. In the analysis of harvested seeds, the cultivar BRS Pérola© presented high physiological quality for all evaluated parameters. On the other hand, Cramberry (OTG)© showed low physiological potential in germination and vigor tests.

Water stress is one of the main limiting factors for common bean crops, negatively affecting grain yield and seed quality. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the inheritance of agromorphological and physiological traits related to drought tolerance in order to identify promising combinations. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with a partial diallel scheme between three drought-tolerant genotypes (IAPAR 81, BAT 477. and SEA 5), and nine cultivars widely grown in Brazil (BRS Estilo, IAC Alvorada, IPR Campos Gerais, IPR Uirapuru, IPR Nhambu, BRS Esteio, IPR Garça, BRS Radiante, and DRK 18), in a randomized block design with four replicates. The plants were grown in pots with substrate under 80% of pot capacity until they reached the stage R5, when water supply was restricted to 30% for 20 days in the pots under stress treatment. A wide variability for the agromorphological and physiological traits was observed. Water deficit reduced plant performance for most agromorphological traits and altered their physiological metabolism. Additive and non-additive effects are involved in the genetic control of the majority of agromorphological and physiological traits both under water stress and control (well-watered) conditions. The parental genotypes BAT 477 (group I) and IAC Alvorada, IPR Uirapuru, and BRS Esteio (group II) may be included in breeding programs aiming at improving drought tolerance in common bean since they present high positive general combining abilities for agromorphological traits. The crosses IAPAR 81 × IPR Campos Gerais, and SEA 5 × BRS Radiante resulted in the best combinations considering grain yield per plant and total dry biomass, when cultivated under water deficit.
