The study investigated the effectiveness of five methods of university admission criteria in relation to academic results achieved after one year of university study. The admission criteria used were open admission, interview, teacher recommendations, Grade 13 academic achievement and SACU test scores. In addition these procedures were compared with a traditional method of admission at the university where the study was carried out. The characteristics of the admission groups were not significantly related to geographical distribution, sex distribution, government financial assistance, and attitude and personality questionnaire data. These characteristics were no different for these groups than the traditional method of selection and there was no significant difference between groups as to final first year grade point average or academic penalty i.e., probations and rustications. The open admissions group compared favourably on these latter variables with other admissions groups and particularly with the university's traditional method of admission.

The article discusses the issues of developing a new design of the educational ecosystem of university which would comply with the main lines of modernisation of the Russian education. Implementing the model of management of educational programmes in the university requires a transition to a new quality of the educational ecosystem of the university. The new design of the educational ecosystem of the University includes the following: an organizational construct for managing educational programmes; an institute of leaders of heads of educational programmes that ensure their quality, the system for managing professional development of academic and research staff on the basis of the concept of the division of pedagogical labour; an integrated electronic management service platform for educational programmess in the university. Managing basic professional educational programs actually means managing a multidimensional educational product aimed at the labour market and at the implementation of the social and educational mandate which includes management of content, process, resources, contingent, finance, and quality. Establishing the leadership institute for heads of basic professional educational programmes is one of the strategic tasks of transition to a new management model; it implies a complex training programme for academic staff, which includes strategic design and implementation of these programmes, strategic management and evaluation of the programmes’ effectiveness. Effective logistics of programme management is ensured by the integrated electronic service platform which is a set of information, educational, organizational, technological and management solutions that provide interactive interaction between participants in the educational process, and is implemented on the basis of the following services: "Personal account of the head of basic professional educational programme", "Profile of professional growth of the academic staff", "Map of personal and professional development of students", "Assessment of profitability of basic professional educational programme", "Evaluation of the basic professional educational programme effectiveness".

The article considers the recommendations for the domestic system of advanced training of scientific and pedagogical staff of higher educational institutions on the basis of the British experience. It is noted that it is appropriate for the domestic system of professional development of scientific and pedagogical staff to use the ideas of corporate education and network approach, which will allow teachers to better adapt to new requirements due to socio-economic changes, timely update and improve their professional knowledge. There is also a need for systematic monitoring of the problems and needs of teachers in order to respond quickly and develop current and modern programs and training courses. It is stated that to improve the efficiency of coordination of work on professional development of scientific and pedagogical staff it is necessary to organize such activities in different departments of the university, which will build an effective individual route of professional growth of teacher from assistant to professor at different levels and in different areas. It is concluded that in order to ensure that the content of the programs meets the needs of students of advanced training courses, it is necessary to significantly improve the feedback between teachers who improve their skills and course developers, including through the Internet and other modern technologies. It is also noted that in order to organize the process of professional development, relevant to each teacher, it is necessary to develop special programs that would take into account the interests and needs of each such teacher. In turn, to optimize the methods and forms of professional development of university teachers it is necessary to use an orderly system of interaction between the moderator and students of the course, the use of e-interactive learning in combination with traditional methods in accordance with the program of advanced training. The active involvement of teachers of domestic universities in the process of professional development will also be facilitated by constructive changes in determining their workload and in the material stimulation of professional activity.

Students entering universities while in recovery from addiction face unique challenges, such as transitioning from a high school to a university, adapting to life after treatment, and/or transferring from a junior college or different university setting. Students in recovery also encounter challenges upon graduation including addressing gaps of employment on resumes, interviewing skills, and general professionalism. Cougars in Recovery offers support to students in recovery at the University of Houston in their academic journey through the use of programs including Source of Strength, offering peer to peer mentorship within the community and Career Ready Coogs, providing support for students approaching graduation with professional development resources. Longitudinal data is still being collected to demonstrate the influence of Source of Strength on Cougars in Recovery member retention and how Career Ready Coogs influences professional growth and preparation for graduation. Peer mentorship and professional development programs can help students in recovery navigate the challenges of the collegiate experience and entering the professional world.

There is an abundance of studies that suggest that the use of co-teaching strategies in higher education courses can enhance instructors’ professional development, mainly by providing a space for transfer of methodologies and tools, as well as critical reflection on one’s teaching practice. However, little has been said about the actual processes through which co-teachers learn from each other. This study analyzes the opportunities of professional growth afforded to seven professors by eight co-taught courses, over two academic years, in the fields of Education and Translation and Interpreting. Specifically, it examines how professional relationships between co-teachers fuel teacher learning, the specific learning processes generated, and the areas of professional development impacted. To do so, 11 reflective teacher diaries were coded and analyzed, and further evidence was collected through focus groups interviews with students of some of the co-taught courses. Results suggest that comparison with the co-teacher is the main force behind participants’ learning on co-teaching; furthermore, such comparisons enable three main learning processes: reflection, negotiation and transfer, bearing mainly on teaching methods and materials and use of technology. Finally, there is evidence that occasional or ongoing team teaching (two instructors simultaneously in class) can enhance the effectiveness of co-teacher comparisons.

The High Voltage Electron Microscope Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin has been in operation a little over one year. I would like to give a progress report about our experience with this new technique. The achievement of good resolution with thick specimens has been mainly exploited so far. A cold stage which will allow us to look at frozen specimens and a hydration stage are now being installed in our microscope. This will soon make it possible to study undehydrated specimens, a particularly exciting application of the high voltage microscope. Some of the problems studied at the Madison facility are: Structure of kinetoplast and flagella in trypanosomes (J. Paulin, U. of Georgia); growth cones of nerve fibers (R. Hannah, U. of Georgia Medical School); spiny dendrites in cerebellum of mouse (Scott and Guillery, Anatomy, U. of Wis.); spindle of baker's yeast (Joan Peterson, Madison) spindle of Haemanthus (A. Bajer, U. of Oregon, Eugene) chromosome structure (Hans Ris, U. of Wisconsin, Madison). Dr. Paulin and Dr. Hanna are reporting their work separately at this meeting and I shall therefore not discuss it here.
