The objective of the current study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity and enzyme inhibitory effect of different parts of medlar including fruit, leaf and flower bud by using various in vitro methods, and also determination of total phenolic and flavonoid content in the samples. Ethanol extracts of medlar parts were prepared and their antioxidant activities were determined using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH•) scavenging and β-carotene bleaching methods. The leaf extract showed the strongest antioxidant activity. DPPHradical scavenging activity was in the order of BHA > leaf > bud > fruit. This ordering was the same for β-carotene bleaching activity, tocopherol > leaf > bud > fruit. The highest total phenolic (60.3 ± 1.69 mg GAE g-1 extract) and flavonoid (14.77 ± 1.15 mg QE g-1 extract) content were determined in leaf extract. For possible antidiabetic effects of extracts, α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities were investigated, the bud extract showed the highest inhibition activities among the all extracts.

Background:Propolis contains compounds with antibacterial and antioxidant capacities, such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial and antioxidant effects of six propolis samples from northern Morocco and to determine their content of polyphenols and flavonoids. Methods:The total polyphenols and flavonoids of Ethanol Extracts (EEP) were evaluated by colorimetric assays. To test the antibacterial activity, the well diffusion and micro-dilution methods were adopted. The kinetic of bacterial growth in the presence of EEP was tested. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using three techniques: reducing power, β-carotene bleaching test, and DPPH scavenging capacity assay. Results:The EEPs were found to have high total phenolic content (65.09 - 122.00 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (41.95 - 50.44 mg QE/g). The screening of the antibacterial activity showed that all tested bacteria were sensitive to EEP except Escherichia coli. The inhibitory zones varied from 11.50 ± 0.70 to 32.00 ± 0.70 mm, and MIC and MBC ranged from 0.07 to 5 mg/mL and 0.07 to >5 mg/mL, respectively. The antioxidant activity was proportional to the phenolic content of propolis. The IC50 varied from 48.70 to 156.00 mg/mL and the RAA% ranged from 75.07 to 96.68 %.

Background: Lycium europaeum L. is a medicinal and edible Mediterranean halophyte spiny shrub. However, studies regarding its biological properties focused mainly on its aerial organs. Objective: The objective of the present work was to make a comparative evaluation of the in vitro antioxidant and inhibitory enzyme activities of ethanol extracts and fractions (chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and aqueous) from roots and leaves of L. europaeum, along with its total phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents. Methods: The antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) 2,2’-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS), superoxide radical, β-carotene bleaching, cupric reducing, and the ferric reducing activity methods. Results: The n-butanol fraction from roots had the highest antioxidant activity in all the assays. It was also the most active against acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, and urease (IC50 values 92.63, 118.26, and 135.60 µgmL-1, respectively). This fraction showed a high level of total phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin contents. Conclusion: The results suggest L. europaeum, especially its roots, as a candidate to be further explored as a source of bioactive products.

Antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extract and fractions from the stem bark of T. catigua was investigated. IC50 (for DPPH scavenging) by T. catigua varied from 9.17 ± 0.63 to 76.42 ± 5.87 mg mL-1 and total phenolic content varied from 345.63 ± 41.08 to 601.27 ± 42.59 mg GAE g-1 of dry extract. Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation was significantly reduced by the ethanolic extract and fractions. Mitochondrial Ca2+-induced dichlorofluorescein oxidation was significantly reduced by the ethanolic extract in a concentration-dependent manner. Ethanolic extract reduced mitochondrial Dym only at high concentrations (40-100 mg mL-1), which indicates that its toxicity does not overlap with its antioxidant effects. Results suggest involvement of antioxidant activities of T. catigua in its pharmacological properties.

<p>To perform a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the phenolic and flavonoid contents and evaluate the antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and <em>n</em>-butanol (<em>n</em>-BuOH) extracts of the aerial parts of <em>Genista ulicina </em>Spach. from Algeria.<strong> </strong>The qualitative analysis of plant extracts was carried out by RP-HPLC using UV detector, whereas the quantification of total phenolic and flavonoid contents was completed according to the Folin-Ciocalteu procedure and aluminium chloride colorimetric method respectively. To evaluate the extract's antioxidant activity, Two in vitro antioxidant tests were employed: DPPH and β-carotene bleaching assay. The HPLC/DAD chromatogram showed several peaks indicating the presence of phenolic acids, flavonoids and isoflavonoids in both extracts. The total phenolic content (TPC) ranged from 62.56 and 50.45 mgGAE/g extract, while the total flavonoids content varied between 53.1 and 48.4 mgQE/g extract for EtOAC and <em>n</em>-BuOH respectively. EtOAc extract showed a maximum inhibition value (78.15%) at 150µg/mL using DPPH test and highest antioxidative power (82.42%) using β-carotene bleaching assay comparing with standards. The HPLC-UV analysis showed the richeness of both extracts in phenolic and flavonoid contents. The EtOAc<em> </em>extract exhibited good antioxidant activities comparing to the <em>n</em>-BuOH extract. Thus <em>Genista ulicina</em> could be indicated as a plant of phytopharmaceutical importance.<strong></strong></p>

Antioxidants are the chemical substances that reduce or prevent oxidation. The present study aimed to assess in vitro antioxidant activities of ethanol extracts Hyptis rhomboidea. DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays were used for characterization of antioxidant activities of several extracts. Eventually, the promising extract was the ethyl acetate (EAc) extract, The analyzed extracts exhibited that antioxidant activities varied considerably as function of extracts. The highest DPPH• scavenging ability was found in Y6-8,which was divided from EAc by silica column, the lowest IC50 value (6.9μg/ml), followed by Y6-9 (11.7μg/ml) and the TEAC of Y6-8 and Y6-9were greater than positive control trolox. The same tendency was observed using ABTS and FRAP assays. These results suggest that the H. rhomboidea shows a better antioxidant activity, especially in the EAc extract and these results would be a guide in the selection of potential cultivars which are used in food and chemical industry and fresh market.

The investigation aimed to study the in vitro and in silico antioxidant properties of Melissa officinalis subsp. officinalis essential oil (MOEO). The chemical composition of MOEO was determined using GC–MS analysis. Among 36 compounds identified in MOEO, the main were beta-cubebene (27.66%), beta-caryophyllene (27.41%), alpha-cadinene (4.72%), caryophyllene oxide (4.09%), and alpha-cadinol (4.07%), respectively. In vitro antioxidant properties of MOEO have been studied in 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical scavenging, and inhibition of β-carotene bleaching assays. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) for the radical scavenging abilities of ABTS and DPPH were 1.225 ± 0.011 μg/mL and 14.015 ± 0.027 μg/mL, respectively, demonstrating good antioxidant activity. Moreover, MOEO exhibited a strong inhibitory effect (94.031 ± 0.082%) in the β-carotene bleaching assay by neutralizing hydroperoxides, responsible for the oxidation of highly unsaturated β-carotene. Furthermore, molecular docking showed that the MOEO components could exert an in vitro antioxidant activity through xanthine oxidoreductase inhibition. The most active structures are minor MOEO components (approximately 6%), among which the highest affinity for the target protein belongs to carvacrol.
