The present study aimed to investigate behavioral changes and neuroinflammatory process following left unilateral common carotid artery occlusion (UCCAO), a model of cerebral ischemia. Post-ischemic behavioral changes following 15 min UCCAO were recorded 24 hours after reperfusion. The novel object recognition task was used to assess learning and memory. After behavioral test, brains from sham and ischemic mice were removed and processed to evaluate central nervous system pathology by TTC and H&E techniques as well as inflammatory mediators by ELISA. UCCAO promoted long-term memory impairment after reperfusion. Infarct areas were observed in the cerebrum by TTC stain. Moreover, the histopathological analysis revealed cerebral necrotic cavities surrounded by ischemic neurons and hippocampal neurodegeneration. In parallel with memory dysfunction, brain levels of TNF-a, IL-1b and CXCL1 were increased post ischemia compared with sham-operated group. These findings suggest an involvement of central nervous system inflammatory mediators and brain damage in cognitive impairment following unilateral acute ischemia.

Background: The prevalence of intracranial neoplasms in dogs represents 2.1 to 4.0% of the cases. Brain tumors may be primary or metastatic. The objective of this study was to describe two cases of intra encephalic neoplasia in elderly dogs received for necropsy by the Veterinary Oncology Service in the Federal University of Pelotas.Cases: Case 1: A 12-year-old female canine, without breed and medium size, was received for necropsy. The animal has had behavioral changes. Macroscopic examination of the encephalus revealed asymmetry and congestion. The organs were collected and fixed in 10% formalin. In the brain cleavage we noticed an extensive brown-gray mass with reddish areas, expansive, moderately demarcated, soft to cut and discrete hydrocephalus. Serial fragments of the brain and fragments of the organs were sent for processing. The slides were stained with the hematoxylin and eosin technique for histopathological analysis. At the microscopic examination, cuboidal cells were observed in the encephalus sometimes in acinar arrangements, of extensive and very limited pattern, diagnosed as ependymoma. Case 2: It is a 15-year-old, female poodle dog, with several tumors. During necropsy multiple subcutaneous nodules, mesentery, intestinal serosa, stomach and liver were noticed. At the cut these were firm and whitish. No macroscopic changes were observed in the other organs. Fragments of organs and brain were collected and a serial section of the encephalus was performed for further processing and histological analysis. In the histopathological analysis the masses were constituted by proliferation of sometimes rounded cells, elongated, with rounded nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm, allowing the diagnosis of mesothelioma. The same cell pattern was observed in other organs. In the frontal cortex of the encephalus there were small foci of cells similar to those observed in the mesentery, as well as metastatic emboli in the meningeal and encephalic vessels, characterizing the diagnosis of metastatic mesothelioma.Discussion: Neoplasms of the central nervous system may be primary or metastatic. The ependymoma observed in case 1 was only diagnosed after visualization of the encephalic mass during necropsy, pointing to the importance of postmortem examination. Brain neoplasms in dogs occur with a frequency and variety similar to that of humans. Most of these are found in older dogs, and 95% of those affected are over five years of age. One situation that may occur in ependymomas is the development of obstructive hydrocephalus by the expansion of the neoplasm into the ventricular system. The animal studied in case 1 presented behavioral changes for weeks before death, and at necropsy ventricular dilation was evidenced, suggesting that hydrocephalus had occurred and the behavioral changes due to tumor localization. Metastatic brain neoplasms occur due to the hematogenous spread of many tumors. The species in which the metastatic neoplasms are most commonly described is the canine. Metastases of mesotheliomas in the central nervous system are rare, which reinforces the need for a thorough postmortem examination, as evidenced in the second case of this study, since the animal did not manifest clinically signs of neurological involvement and the metastasis was only identified microscopically by serial cuts of the encephalon. It can be concluded that detailed, systematic and serial post-mortem examination of the central nervous system should be part of the diagnostic routine even if no clinical neurological signs are evident. The reports presented here are of importance since they are considered rare diagnoses of primary and metastatic brain tumors.

Background:  Though the central nervous system tumor comprises ~2% of all the tumors, an overall increase has been observed especially in less developed countries. This increase in the incidence may be due to exposure of population to various risk factors or improved diagnosis with advancement in the ancillary studies. This study aims to provide a single centre histopathological spectrum of this type of tumor.Materials and Methods: A retrospective cross sectional study on a series of cases was performed in the Department of Pathology, Annapurna Neurological Institute & Allied Science , Maitighar , Kathmandu, Nepal from April 2013 to Jan 2016. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.0.Results: A total of 221 brain and CNS tumors (125 females and 96 males) were studied. The mean age at diagnosis was 43.77 years. The most common tumor was meningioma(67 cases, 30.3%), followed by astrocytic tumor (57 cases, 25.7%) and pituitary adenoma(30 cases,13.6%). The frequency of WHO grade I, II,III and IV tumor were 94 cases (55%), 34 cases (19.9%),10 cases (5.8%), and 33 cases (19.3%) respectively. The astrocytic tumor was most frequent tumor in children (7/20 caes, 37 %).Conclusion: This study showed the most common CNS tumor to be meningioma followed by astrocytic tumors and pituitary adenoma. The spectrum of CNS tumor in children showed divergent histologic pattern according to the age. In age group 0-10 years embryonal tumors were common whereas ages group of 12-years showed propensity towards astrocytoma as in adults.

Abstract Background Nonneoplastic cysts of brain are a diverse group of benign lesions with variable etiopathogenesis. Due to different site and histogenesis, these lesions have wide clinicopathologic spectrum. Objective The study was performed to evaluate epidemiology and clinicopathologic spectrum of nonneoplastic central nervous system (CNS) cysts highlighting the role of histopathology in the diagnosis as well as to compare the data with other institution’s data available in literature. Materials and Methods All nonneoplastic CNS cysts reported from January 2013 to June 2020 in the Department of Pathology of Sawai Man Singh Medical College, Jaipur, were retrieved and reviewed. The data were evaluated for age, site, cyst wall lining, nature of cyst contents, and location (intracranial and spinal), using SPSS software version 20.0. Results A total of 255 cases were reviewed with an incidence of 4.96% and an age range of 2 to 74 years with slight male preponderance. Among them there were 157, 34, 26, 24, and 2 cases of epidermoid, arachnoid, dermoid, colloid, and glioependymal cysts, respectively, and 1 case of perineural cyst. Infective cysts were much less common than noninfective cysts, accounting for two cases of neurocysticercosis and hydatid cysts each. All cyst types mainly presented with signs and symptoms of a mass lesion. Conclusion Nonneoplastic cyst mainly presented like a CNS mass lesion with overlapping clinical features, and image finding revealing the key role of histopathological analysis. Epidermoids were the most common type of these cysts in the present series followed by the arachnoid cysts.

Context: Primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSL) are a rare but very aggressive subtype of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas. They represent only 4% of primary central nervous system lesions and are more common in patients with aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphomas, who are HIV positive. Moreover, PCNSL, usually presents as intraparenchymal supratentorial expansive lesions, while secondary CNS lymphomas tend to present as metastases in the leptomeninges. Although they are more common in immunocompromised patients, their incidence has increased with advancing age. Due to its uniqueness in findings, rarity, and severity of the case, we present an immunocompetent elderly patient with a primary lesion of the posterior fossa. Case report: A 85-year-old female was admitted to the emergency room with incoercible vomiting for 48 hours. Initial clinical examination showed dysmetry, and dysbasia. There was no clinical history compatible with immunosuppression. The initial magnetic resonance imaging revealed two non-enhancing contrast lesions in T1 and hyperintense in T2/Flair in the left caudate nucleus, and at the right cerebellar hemisphere near the fourth ventricle and a third parafalcine lesion with homogenous contrast-enhancing on T1 compatible with an incidental meningioma. PET scan, thyroid and breast ultrasonography, and abdominal MRI were done to rule out metastasis, and all results were negative. The histopathological analysis after a stereotactic biopsy performed on the caudate nucleus lesion confirmed the presence of primary central nervous system lymphoma. Conclusions: The pattern of PCNSL is changing due to aging. Knowing this is indispensable for the correct diagnosis and management.

Abstract The genus Myxobolus, parasites that infect fishes, which cause myxobolosis, includes spore organisms belonging to the phylum Myxozoa and represents approximately 36% of all species described for the entire phylum. This study describes lymphocytic meningoencephalomyelitis associated with Myxobolus sp. infection in the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system, CNS) of Eigenmannia sp., from the Amazon estuary region, in the Administrative District of Outeiro (DAOUT), Belém, Pará, Brazil. In May and June 2015, 40 Eigenmannia sp. specimens were captured from this region and examined. The fish were anesthetized, slaughtered and dissected for sexing (gonad evaluation) and studying parasites and cysts; after diagnosing the presence of the myxozoans using a light microscope, small fragments of the brain and spinal cord were removed for histological processing and Hematoxylin-Eosin and Ziehl-Neelsen staining. Histopathological analysis of the brain and spinal cord, based on histological sections stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin, pronounced and diffuse edema in these tissues, and congestion, degeneration, and focal necrosis of the cerebral cortex. The present study describes lymphocytic meningoencephalomyelitis associated with infection by Myxobolus sp. in the central nervous system of Eigenmannia sp.
