ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze nursing university students’ perception of the professional skills to act in the hospital setting developed during their academic training, and what strategies are being created for the development of these skills during their performance. Method: an exploratory, qualitative study in which 40 nursing university students participated. The data were collected from September to December 2016 and conducted thematic inductive analysis. Results: clinical skills were identified that could be learned and previously developed at the undergraduate level; and management skills learned during undergraduate education and developed only in the hospital environment. Strategies for the development of skills were identified, such as individual study and Permanent Education, by the employing institution. Final considerations: it was evidenced that college contributed in significant proportions for learning and development of some clinical and management skills in the hospital. Still, despite the identified strategies, managers and training centers need to continuously implement strategies for the development of new skills in nurses.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to analyse Italian high school and university students’ attitudes towards physics using the Semiotic Cultural Psychological Theory (SCPT). In the SCPT framework, attitudes represent how individuals interpret their experience through the mediation of generalized meaning with which they are identified. A view-of-physics questionnaire was used as an instrument to collect data with 1603 high school and university students. Data were analysed through multiple correspondence analysis and cluster analysis. We identified four generalized meanings of physics: (a) interesting and important for society; (b) a quite interesting, but badly taught subject at school and not completely useful for society; (c) difficult to study and irrelevant for society; and (d) a fascinating and protective niche from society. The identified generalized meanings are significantly correlated to the choice to study physics at undergraduate level and to the choice of attending physics-related activities in high school. Implications for research are discussed.

Abstract Background SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Viruses exist in complex microbial environments, and recent studies have revealed both synergistic and antagonistic effects of specific bacterial taxa on viral prevalence and infectivity. We set out to test whether specific bacterial communities predict SARS-CoV-2 occurrence in a hospital setting. Methods We collected 972 samples from hospitalized patients with COVID-19, their health care providers, and hospital surfaces before, during, and after admission. We screened for SARS-CoV-2 using RT-qPCR, characterized microbial communities using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and used these bacterial profiles to classify SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection with a random forest model. Results Sixteen percent of surfaces from COVID-19 patient rooms had detectable SARS-CoV-2 RNA, although infectivity was not assessed. The highest prevalence was in floor samples next to patient beds (39%) and directly outside their rooms (29%). Although bed rail samples more closely resembled the patient microbiome compared to floor samples, SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected less often in bed rail samples (11%). SARS-CoV-2 positive samples had higher bacterial phylogenetic diversity in both human and surface samples and higher biomass in floor samples. 16S microbial community profiles enabled high classifier accuracy for SARS-CoV-2 status in not only nares, but also forehead, stool, and floor samples. Across these distinct microbial profiles, a single amplicon sequence variant from the genus Rothia strongly predicted SARS-CoV-2 presence across sample types, with greater prevalence in positive surface and human samples, even when compared to samples from patients in other intensive care units prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions These results contextualize the vast diversity of microbial niches where SARS-CoV-2 RNA is detected and identify specific bacterial taxa that associate with the viral RNA prevalence both in the host and hospital environment.

Monthly surveillance allows us to monitor trends in the recovery of these resistant organisms and address issues of concern that could impact our patients, clients, staff, and students. Methods: The OSU-CVM ASWG collects samples from >100 surfaces within the companion animal, farm animal, and equine sections of our hospital each month. Sampling has been continuous since January 2018. Samples are collected from both human–animal contact and human-only contact surfaces using Swiffer electrostatic cloths. These samples are cultured for recovery of Salmonella spp, extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE), and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus spp. Results: The recovery of these antibiotic resistant target organisms is low in the environment of our hospital. Recovery from human-only contact surfaces (19.8%) is very similar to recovery from human–animal contact surfaces (25.5%). We commonly recover Enterobacteriaceae (E.coli, Klebsiella spp, and Enterobacter spp) that are resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (496 of 2,016; 24.6%) from the VMC environment. These antibiotic-resistant indicator bacteria are expected in a veterinary hospital setting where use the of β-lactam drugs is common. Recovery of both Salmonella spp and CPE has remained very low in our hospital environment over the past 19 months: 16 of 2,016 (0.7%) for Salmonella and 15 of 2,016 (0.8%) for CPE. Discussion: The active environmental surveillance component of our antimicrobial stewardship program has allowed us to reduce the threat of nosocomial infections within our hospital and address environmental contamination issues before they become a problem. Our consistently low recovery of resistant organisms indicates the effectiveness of our existing cleaning and disinfection protocols and biosecurity measures. Due to the nature of our patient population, we do expect to find resistant organisms in the patient-contact areas of the hospital environment. However, our similar rates of resistant organisms from human-only surfaces (eg, computer keyboards, door handles, telephones, and Cubex machines) indicates a need to improve our hand hygiene practices. <p><strong>Introduction:</strong> The urogenital physical examination is an important aspect of patient encounters in various clinical settings. Introductory clinical skills sessions are intended to provide support and alleviate students’ anxiety when learning this sensitive exam. The techniques each Canadian medical school uses to guide their students through the initial urogenital examination has not been previously reported.</p><p><strong>Methods:</strong> This study surveyed pre-clerkship clinical skills program directors at the main campus of English-speaking Canadian medical schools regarding the curriculum they use to teach the urogenital examination.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> A response rate of 100% was achieved, providing information on resources and faculty available to students, as well as the manner in which students were evaluated. Surprisingly, over onethird of the Canadian medical schools surveyed failed to provide a setting in which students perform a urogenital examination on a patient in their pre-clinical years. Additionally, there was no formal evaluation of this skill set reported by almost 50% of Canadian medical schools prior to clinical training years.</p><p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> To ensure medical students are confident and accurate in performing a urogenital examination, it is vital they be provided the proper resources, teaching, and training. As we progress towards a competency-based curriculum, it is essential that increased focus be placed on patient encounters in undergraduate training. Further research to quantify students’ exposure to the urogenital examination during clinical years would be of interest. Without this commitment by Canadian medical schools, we are doing a disservice not only to the medical students, but also to our patient population.</p>

Background: The integration of health promotion in the treatment of patients should be included in all academic curricula in primary training of health professionals. However, the extent to which health promotion is included in the various curricula at undergraduate level is not known.Objective: To assess the extent to which health promotion content is integrated in undergraduate physiotherapy training programmes in South Africa. Method: This was a qualitative and descriptive study, using in-depth interviews with representatives of physiotherapy academic departments.Results: All universities have some content of health promotion, with the weighting varying between 12% and 40%. Health promotion is taught at various levels of study, and health promotion training blocks are in both urban and rural settings and include communities, schools and old-age homes. The theories of advocacy, enabling and mediation are covered, but there is limited practical training on these elements. There are limited human resources trained in health promotion, as well as a lack of clear processes of developing and reviewing teaching and training materials.Conclusion: There is lack of consensus on the weighting of health promotion, the level at which it is taught and how it is evaluated across universities. Challenges to integrate health promotion in physiotherapy curricula include lack of frequent curricula reviews, inadequate training of lecturers and lack of conducive practical sites.The physiotherapy profession needs to reach a consensus on minimum standards for integration of health promotion in undergraduate training, and the physiotherapy professional board has the potential to provide the required leadership.

Financial management defined as behavior and perceptions about how financial is managed. For the present, student financial management refers to the behavior and perceptions of how students manage their finances and handle their money during studies. The aim of this study is to assess university students’ financial management skills. Data were collected among Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) students. The selection of this sample was students with an age between 18 years old to 25 years old. The sample was selected through the simple random sampling technique with the sample size of 114 respondents. Perceived financial management skills were measured using a Likert scale from 1 (unskilled) to 5 (skilful) on 12 management related items: daily expenses, debt, future needs, time, savings, use of education loan, purpose of education loan, social interaction, stress, decision making, problem solving and career planning. The data were analyzed by using t-tests and Analyses of Variances (ANOVA) through Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. The scores for the financial management skills were computed and the results revealed there was no gender difference in the score. However, the female students showed a higher level of financial skills than the males. Therefore, there are significant differences in the mean score among ethnic groups, with Indian students scoring the lowest compared to other ethnic groups.

Introduction: The kinds of leadership have been discussed not only in academia but in the corporate world. It has been observed that some types have negatively influenced the organizational environment and the work process. Objective: To analyze the leadership practiced by nursing professionals within the hospital environment and their impacts on the work process and organizational climate. Methods: This is a scoping review whose objective was to map the main concepts about leadership styles and influence, examining and summarizing the existing research gaps. The following databases were used: MEDLINE, LILACS, IBESCS, PUBMED, and ENDENF. Results: Twenty nine articles were selected. The autocratic leadership style was the most cited as unfavorable for maintaining a favorable organizational climate for workers' welfare. Conclusion: It is believed that the leadership practiced by the nurse influences positively or negatively on the corporate environment and well-being at work.

Education and training were an integral part of the MoniQA Network of Excellence. Embedded in the "Spreading of excellence programme", Work Package 9 (Joint education programmes and training tools) was responsible for establishing a joint training programme for food safety and quality within and beyond the network. So-called `MoniQA Food Scientist Training' (MoniQA FST) was offered to provide technical knowledge on different levels and research management skills as well. Training needs for different regions as well as for different target groups (scientists, industry personnel, authorities) had to be considered as well as developing strong collaboration links between network partners and related projects. Beside face-to-face workshops e-learning modules have been developed and web seminars were organized. In order to achieve high quality training, a quality assurance concept has been implemented. It turned out that these types of training are of high value in terms of bringing together scientists from different regions and cultures of the globe, involving highly qualified trainers as basis for a sustainable network in the future.
