ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to select Coffea canephora clones of superior processed coffee productivity based on the estimates of the genetic parameters and of genetic progress with the plant selection. For this, the production of processed coffee from 130 clones was evaluated from 2014 to 2016 in a clonal test, installed in randomized complete blocks with four plants per plot and six replications, spaced 3 × 2m at the experiment station Embrapa Rondônia in the municipality of Ouro Preto do Oeste - RO. The estimation of genetic parameters and prediction of genotypic values were performed using REML/BLUP procedure (Restricted Maximum Likelihood/Best Unbiased Linear Prediction). Estimates of the genetic parameters confirmed the predominance of the genetic component in the expression of this trait, indicating the possibility of obtaining gains with the plant selection. Genetic progress of processed coffee productivity from the selection of 10% of the best clones was 49.88%, which is equivalent to an increase in average productivity from 42.57 bags.ha-1 to 66.95 bags.ha-1. The use of the harmonic mean of the genetic values helped to identify the clones of superior performance, with higher adaptability and stability for the northern region of Brazil.

The evaluation of morphological characters related to the hulled coffee yield subsidizes the selection of <em>Coffea canephora</em> plants that combine a set of favorable traits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of agronomic traits on the production of hulled coffee to subside the plant selection. To this, nine morphological descriptors were evaluated of 130 clones of the botanical varieties Conilon and Robusta over two crop years in the experimental field of Embrapa, in the municipality of Ouro Preto do Oeste, state of Rondônia (RO). To quantify the genetic variability the path analysis and the Scott Knott cluster test were used. The effect of genotype x year interaction was significant for eight of the nine characteristics analyzed. The genotypes were clustered in three to five classes, subsidizing the establishment of a scale to evaluate the variability of this genetic resource. Pathway analysis indicated that the number of plagiotropic branches and the number of rosettes per productive branch were the traits that exhibited the greatest direct effect on hulled coffee yield. These results show that it is possible to select plants with complementarity traits which favor a higher production of hulled coffee.

The objective of this paper was to estimate the genetic parameters and additive genetic values in segregating populations of papaya using the mixed model methodology. Two F2 populations from Tainung and Calimosa hybrids were evaluated. The experimental design was an augmented block with four replicates, and Golden and Calimosa cultivars were the common treatment. Estimates of individual heritability were high for fruit length (FL) and weight (FW), moderate for fruit diameter (FD), and low for total soluble solids (TSS) and fruit firmness (FF). Considering FF and TSS as main traits for selection, genotypes of Calimosa-F2 population showed better performance to FF, but worse concerning TSS. It was selected 18.3% and 24.6% of plants from Tainung-F2 and Calimosa-F2 populations, respectively. Negative correlation between TSS and FF was not able to reduce the genetic gains. The segregating populations from Calimosa hybrid are more promising for the selection of papaya lines.

Breeding methods such as reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS) is very important alternative to breeders. This strategy, besides allowing continuous genetic progress, helps maintaining the genetic variability of populations. The aim of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters, as well as to predict selection gains in advanced cycles of reciprocal recurrent selection of maize progenies through mixed models. Two selection cycles were considered. We evaluated 196 and 169 progenies in the 15 and 16 cycles, respectively. The yield potential of the progenies was evaluated from the following characteristics: grain yield, number of ears, weight of ears and weight of 100 seeds. The estimate of variance components and the prediction of genetic values were based on the REML/BLUP method. Overall, the genetic parameters were increased in the 16th cycle estimates compared to the previous cycle. It is worth highlighting that heritability coefficient for the grain yield was (0.81) in the 16th cycle, since it resulted in 21% of selection gain. Results showed that, even after sixteen recurrent selection cycles, the populations under selection have high potential for satisfactory genetic gains.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to select superior sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) genotypes with higher yield potential based on data from eight harvests, using the residual or restricted maximum likelihood/best linear unbiased prediction (REML/BLUP) methodology. The experiment was carried out from 2002 to 2008 and in 2010 in the municipality of Rio Branco, in the state of Acre, Brazil. Analyzes of deviance were performed to test the significance of the components of variance according to the random effects of the used model, and parameters were estimated from individual genotypic and phenotypic variances. A selection intensity of 20% was adopted regarding genotypic selection, i.e., only the best 11 of the 55 genotypes tested were selected. The estimates of the genetic parameters show the existence of genetic variability and the selection potential of the studied sweet orange genotypes. The genotypic correlation between harvests is of low magnitude, except for the variable average fruit mass, and, as a reflex, there is a change in the ordering of the genotypes. Genotypes 5, 48, 19, 14, and 47 stand out as being the most productive, and, therefore, are the most suitable for selection purposes. Genotypes 14 and 47 show superior performance for the character set evaluated.

Представлены результаты исследования по выявлению хозяйственно-биологических особенностей и селекционно-генетических параметров селекционируемых признаков коров стада абердин-ангусской породы австралийской репродукции. По результатам исследования выявлено, что генетический потенциал продуктивности максимально выражен в возрасте пяти лет (у полновозрастных коров) и перманентно сохраняется до девятилетнего возраста. Рост основных селекционируемых признаков с двух до пяти лет составил по живой массе 15,1%, по молочности – 5,1%. С увеличением возраста маток отмечен стабильный рост показателя «выход деловых телят» на 2,3%. Селекционный дифференциал за три поколения у коров в трёхлетнем возрасте по живой массе составил 23 кг и по молочности – 7,4 кг, коэффициент наследуемости составил 0,42 по живой массе и 0,36 – по молочности коров, эффект селекции по живой массе за поколение составил 9,7 кг, за год – 1,9 кг, по молочности – 2,7 кг и 0,5 кг соответственно. У генотипированных коров по схеме мать-дочь эффект селекции за поколение был выше у гетерозиготных генотипов дочерей, рождённых в Курганской области. Знание и рациональное использование традиционных и новых по ДНК маркерных методов селекции на производстве позволит выявить, а также реализовать генетический резерв животных и управлять селекционным процессом при совершенствовании племенного стада абердин-ангусской породы. The results of research on detecting of commercial-biological features and selection-genetic parameters of cows’ features under selection of the Australian reproduction Aberdeen-Angus breed herd of are presented. According to the results of the research it was revealed that the genetic potential of productivity is maximally expressed at the age of 5 years (in mature cowbanes) and persists permanently until the age of nine. The growth of the main features under selection from two to five years amounted to 15.1% by live weight, 5.1% by milking capacity. With an increase in the age of the dams a stable increase in the "calf crop percent" by 2.3% was noted. The selection differential for three generations in cows at the age of three years in living weight was 23 kg and in milking capacity – 7.4 kg, the inheritance coefficient was 0.42 in living weight and 0.36 - in milking capacity of cows, the effect of selection by live weight per generation was 9.7 kg, for the year – 1.9 kg, in milking capacity – 2.7 kg and 0.5 kg, respectively. In genotyped cows according to the dam-daughter scheme genetic progress through selection per generation was higher in heterozygous genotypes of daughters born in the Kurgan region. Knowledge and rational use of traditional and new DNA marker methods of selection at the place of production will allow identifying, as well as unlocking the genetic reserve of animals and managing the selection process while improving the breeding herd of the Aberdeen-Angus breed.

Introdução: O estado de Rondônia se destaca como tradicional produtor de café, sendo o segundo maior produtor brasileiro de C. canephora. No melhoramento genético de C. canephora, a seleção de plantas de elevada peneira média está associada à bebida de qualidade superior. Objetivos: O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a variabilidade genética de clones de C. canephora para o tamanho dos grãos, mensurado a partir da avaliação da peneira média (PM). Materiais e Métodos: Para isso, foi conduzido ao longo de dois anos agrícolas experimento no campo experimental da Embrapa no município de Ouro Preto do Oeste-RO, para a avaliação da peneira média de 130 genótipos (clones) com características das variedades botânicas Conilon, Robusta e híbridos intervarietais. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições de quatro plantas por parcela. Resultados: Não houve resultados significativos para a interação clones X anos, indicando uma maior consistência no comportamento das plantas ao longo do tempo. Porém foram observadas diferenças significativas para o tamanho dos grãos entre os genótipos avaliados, possibilitando selecionar genótipos superiores. Conclusão: Os genótipos agruparam-se em cinco classes de acordo com o teste de média, subsidiando a caracterização de um gradiente de variabilidade da característica avaliada ABSTRACTIntroduction: Coffea canephora accounts for approximately 35% of the world's coffee production. The state of Rondônia stands out as a traditional coffee producer, being the second largest Brazilian producer of C. canephora. In the classical genetic improvement of C. anephora, the selection of plants of high average sieve is associated with a drink of superior quality. Objectives: The objective of this udy was to evaluate the genetic variability of Coffea canephora clones for the agronomic medium sieve (PM). Materials and Methods: The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Embrapa, municipality of OuroPreto do Oeste-RO, located at coordinates 10º44'53 "S and 62º12'57". One hundred thirty genotypes (clones) of botanical characteristics Conilon, Robusta and intervarietal hybrids were evaluated in the agricultural years 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four blocks and four plants per plot, spacing 3.5 x 1.5 meters between plants. Results: Significant difference was found for the grain size. According to the F test, at 5% probability, the genotypes were grouped into five classes according to the mean test. Conclusion: The results obtained subsidized the characterization of a variability gradient of the evaluated trait.

Genomics comprises a set of current and valuable technologies implemented as selection tools in dairy cattle commercial breeding programs. The intensive progeny testing for production and reproductive traits based on genomic breeding values (GEBVs) has been crucial to increasing dairy cattle productivity. The knowledge of key genes and haplotypes, including their regulation mechanisms, as markers for productivity traits, may improve the strategies on the present and future for dairy cattle selection. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) such as quantitative trait loci (QTL), single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), or single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP) methods have already been included in global dairy programs for the estimation of marker-assisted selection-derived effects. The increase in genetic progress based on genomic predicting accuracy has also contributed to the understanding of genetic effects in dairy cattle offspring. However, the crossing within inbred-lines critically increased homozygosis with accumulated negative effects of inbreeding like a decline in reproductive performance. Thus, inaccurate-biased estimations based on empirical-conventional models of dairy production systems face an increased risk of providing suboptimal results derived from errors in the selection of candidates of high genetic merit-based just on low-heritability phenotypic traits. This extends the generation intervals and increases costs due to the significant reduction of genetic gains. The remarkable progress of genomic prediction increases the accurate selection of superior candidates. The scope of the present review is to summarize and discuss the advances and challenges of genomic tools for dairy cattle selection for optimizing breeding programs and controlling negative inbreeding depression effects on productivity and consequently, achieving economic-effective advances in food production efficiency. Particular attention is given to the potential genomic selection-derived results to facilitate precision management on modern dairy farms, including an overview of novel genome editing methodologies as perspectives toward the future.

Sugarcane breeding programs require 15 years of experimentation to create more productive cultivars, and estimates of genetic progress can indicate the efficiency of breeding programs. In this study, we used a diversity panel, the Brazilian Panel of Sugarcane Genotypes (BPSG), with the following objectives: (i) to estimate, through a mixed model, the adjusted means and genetic parameters of ten traits evaluated over three harvest years; (ii) to estimate genotypic correlation among those traits; and (iii) to estimate genetic progress over six decades of breeding. The heritabilities ranged from 0.43 to 0.88, and we detected 42 significant correlations, 9 negative and 33 positive. Over six decades, the sucrose-related traits BRIX, POL%C, and POL%J showed an average increase per decade of 0.27 °Brix (0.26% and 0.31%, respectively). Stalk number, height, and weight of the plot, and cane and sucrose yields revealed average increases per decade of 3.27 stalks, 0.06 m, 9.42 kg, 11.22 t/ha, and 2.08 t/ha, respectively. The genetic progress of the main agronomic traits is discussed through a historical series of sugarcane genotypes present in the BPSG. The findings of this study could contribute to the management of new breeding strategies and allow for future studies of associative mapping.
