Colchicum species, which have been widely used as a medication for years, still remain important in treatment of Familial Mediterranean Fever, gout and Behcet's Disease. In the present work, alkaloids, phenolic compounds and cytotoxic activities from different parts of two Colchicum species, namely C. chalcedonicum and C. micranthum were investigated for the first time. From different parts of two species, alkaloids were isolated and colchicine concentrations were also determined by HPLC. The methanol extracts were investigated for their cytotoxic activity against the A549 cell line using the MTT and LDH methods. Additionally, the phenolic compounds of each extract were investigated by LC–MS/MS. Six alkaloids, namely colchicine, colchifoline, 2-demethylcolchicine, demecolcine, 4-hydroxycolchicine and N-deacetyl- N-formylcolchicine were isolated from different parts of two species. The autumn corm of C. micranthum possessed the highest amount of colchicine among all extracts. All extracts showed high cytotoxicity, while the highest toxicity was determined in the seed extract. According to the LC–MS/MS analysis, 19 phenolic compounds were shown to be present. This is the first study which highlights that the seeds of C. chalcedonicum and autumn corms of C. micranthum could be valuable for the pharmaceutical industry to obtain colchicine and other tropolone alkaloids.

The genus Glycyrrhiza consists of about 30 species in which G. glabra, G. uralensis, G. inflata, G. aspera, G. korshinskyi, and G. eurycarpa are generally recognized as licorice because of their sweet taste. Except G. korshinskyi, we examined isoprenoid-substituted phenols of these licorices. Each plant could be characterized by some isoprenoid phenols. We also investigated the biological activities of the Glycyrrhiza phenols. In the course of screening phytoestrogen in medicinal plants, six Glycyrrhiza phenols exhibited the binding affinities for the bovine uterine estrogen receptor. The affinity of a dihydrostilbene with two 3-methyl-2-butenyl (prenyl) groups, gancaonin R, was higher than those of isoflavone phytoestrogens (genistein and daidzein) in dietary foods. The affinities of the other five phenols, a flavanone (liquiritigenin), two prenylflavanones (isobavachin and sigmoidin B), a prenylated coumestan (glycyrol), and a pyranoisoflav-3-ene (glabrene), were similar to that of the dietary isoflavone, genistein or daidzein. Cytotoxic activities of the Glycyrrhiza phenols against human oral tumor cell lines and HIV-infected MT-4 cells were also reviewed.

A methanolextract of the leaves of Parabaena sagitatta Miers and its petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride, dichloromethane, ethylacetate and aqueous soluble partitionates were evaluated for antioxidant activity by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Folin-Ciocalteau reagent and phosphomolybdenum total antioxidant assays by using butylated hydroxytolune (BHT) and ascorbic acid as standards. The dichloromethane soluble fraction demonstrated the presence of significant amount of phenolic compounds 61.06 ± 0.54 mg GAE/g of extract and also has moderate antioxidant activity IC50 50.62 ± 0.25 ?g/ml. A positive correlation (R2), 0.969 was observed between total phenolic content and total antioxidant activity of P. sagitatta. Rumex crispus L. (R. crispus) is regarded as an aromatic plant. It was used for its excellent biological properties in traditional medicine. The aerial part was extracted successively by maceration with three solvents increasing polarity (cyclohexane (CYH), dichloromethane (DCM), and methanol (MeOH)) to evaluate their chemical compositions and biological activities. The extracts were rich in phenolic compounds (13.0 to 249.8 mg GAE/g of dry weight (dw)). The MeOH extract has presented remarkable IC50 = 6.2 μg/mL for anti-DPPH and 31.6 μg/mL for anti-AChE. However, the DCM extract has the highest cytotoxic activity against the two cancer cells (HCT-116 and MCF-7) (69.2 and 77.2% inhibition at 50 μg/mL, respectively). Interestingly, GC-MS analysis enabled to identify three new compounds in R. crispus extracts, such as L-(−)-arabitol (5), D-(−) fructopyranose (7) detected only in MeOH extract, and 2, 5-dihydroxyacetophenone (3) detected in all extracts. For HPLC chromatograms, cardamonin (8), 5-hydroxy-3′-methoxyflavone (17), and 3′-hydroxy-b-naphthoflavone (18) showed the highest concentrations of 74.0, 55.5, and 50.4 mg/g of dw, respectively, among others who are identified. Some phenolic compounds were identified and quantified by HPLC in more than one organic extract, such as 4′, 5-dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone (13), 4′, 5-dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone (14), 5-hydroxy-3′-methoxyflavone (17), and 3′-hydroxy-b-naphthoflavone (18), were found for the first time in the R. crispus extracts. Our results showed that the biological activities of this plant might be linked to their phenolic compounds and that the polar extracts could be considered as new natural supplements to be used in food and pharmaceuticals.

Corchorus olitorius L. is an African leafy vegetable of high nutritional interest. To assess its agricultural suitability to sustainable cultivation conditions and its potential benefits for human nutrition, its phytochemical content in response to conservation agriculture practices [i.e., no-tillage (NT) and cover crop maintenance] and low water regime were evaluated and compared with response under conventional agriculture management. Hydric stress and NT did not affect the content of antioxidant metabolites, compared to conventional agricultural practices. In both conditions, leaves were found to be a great source of phenolic compounds. The effect of these phenolic fractions was assessed on two colon cell phenotypes to evaluate putative nutraceutical properties. Polyphenol-enriched extracts (PEEs) displayed selective cytotoxic activities against tumor Caco-2 cells but not on the healthy CCD841 line. PEEs were able to trigger oxidative stress and to inhibit the activity of glutathione-independent antioxidant enzymes on Caco-2 cells. C. olitorius showed to be a promising crop for improving both agricultural sustainability and health benefits due to the great amount of antioxidant compounds in leaves, whose occurrence is not altered by stressful farming conditions. Given its high adaptability, the cultivation of this crop is therefore recommendable also in the Mediterranean Basin.

A new flavonoid, macatanarin D (1), together with five known stilbenes (2-6), was isolated from fruit glandular trichomes of Macaranga tanarius. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods and through comparison with data reported in the literature. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against KB and MCF-7 cell lines. Compounds 3, 4, and 5 showed the strongest activities against both cell lines with IC50 values in the range of 0.03–0.12 μM, and compound 2 only showed a significant cytotoxicity against KB cell line (IC50 = 0.26 μM) and a moderate cytotoxicity against MCF-7 (IC50 = 10.4 μM). Compounds 1 and 6 showed weak cytotoxic activities against KB cell line with IC50 values of 29.3 and 24.7 μM, respectively.

M. cervina showed the highest concentration of phenolic compounds and the best antioxidant and cytotoxic activities, while C. officinalis presented higher amounts of sugars, organic acids and tocopherols.
