Abstract Objective: To understand the connections established between the teaching of research in undergraduate school and reflections on the context of nursing care based on the meanings assigned by nurses and undergraduate nursing students. Method: Qualitative research, the theoretical and methodological frameworks of which were Complexity Theory and Grounded Theory. Sixteen nurses and nine undergraduate nursing students participated. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Results: The study revealed that aspects that structure and maintain the scientific practice of nurses are connected with the teaching of nursing in undergraduate school. The transversality of teaching of research and strategies adopted by professors influence this process. Conclusion: In the nursing field, learning through research requires strategies that contextualize research within the context of care delivery, so that students perceive science as an element that structures their profession. For that, research should be a non-linear, transversal procedure that takes place over the course of the undergraduate program.

Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate professors' perceptions about their experiences in the teaching-learning process of nursing care in relation to dying. This is a descriptive-exploratory, qualitative research, delimited by data saturation, was carried out with 11 nursing professors from three higher education institutions. Data collection involved the drawing-text theme technique and a semi-structured interview. Analysis used the technique of collective subject discourse. The results identified three categories: How I would like to take care in the context of finitude - my challenge; Challenging fragilities in the teaching of nurses in the context of care concerned with death and dying; Strategies to compensate or promote more substantial nurse training related to care in finitude. We conclude that the graduation of the nurses studied did not satisfactorily develop the necessary skills and abilities to deal with human death and dying. This study infers the need of permanent education to support transformations in this area.

PurposeThis paper explores the challenges of conducting qualitative research from ELT (English Language Teaching) Ph.D. candidates' perspectives.Design/methodology/approachThe participants of the study consisted of 30 Iranian Ph.D. students majoring in ELT. The semi-structured interview was employed to investigate the heart of experiences, issues and concerns of participants with regard to conducting qualitative research (QLR) challenges. To analyze the collected data, the recorded interviews were transcribed, and then the grounded theory approach was employed (Charmaz, 2006).FindingsThe results revealed that the major challenges of the participants consist of the credibility of QLR in ELT contexts, hermeneutic and fuzzy nature of QLR, qualitative data analysis and interpretation, publishing qualitative findings and the system of measuring professors' productivity.Originality/valueThe findings may help professors, mainly EFL ones, in research mentoring and developing research syllabi for graduate students. In addition, it may motivate Ph.D. candidates to employ QLR methods in their research studies. The pedagogical and theoretical implications of the study are discussed at the end of the paper.

Aim To understand nurses’ perceptions of quality nursing care in the dementia-specific care unit. As the world’s population ages, the incidence of dementia is projected to rise in tandem. The requirement for skilled, dementia-trained registered nurses who can provide quality nursing care will need to increase accordingly to meet the needs of these individuals. Extensive research has been completed on dementia nursing care in a variety of settings; however, little research has been undertaken into nurses’ perceptions of quality nursing care in the dementia-specific care unit. Understanding how registered nurses perceive quality nursing care in the dementia-specific care unit is important and provides valuable information about nursing practice in this environment for nurses and decision-makers. Gaining a better understanding of quality nursing care in this care unit may result in better nurse education and an improved patient experience. It may also assist nursing organisations, residential aged-care facilities, government bodies and nongovernment agencies that support, manage, and oversee dementia-specific care units. Method A grounded theory study was conducted to understand nurses’ perceptions of quality nursing care in dementia-specific care units. The study involved interviewing nine registered nurses working in two dementia-specific care units on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Data were collected during semi-structured interviews and analysed using both constant comparison and thematic analysis. Findings Three themes emerged from this study— Caring at the Coalface, Labour of love and the Business of Dementia Healthcare. The largest theme, Labour of love, represents the personal reward and feeling of satisfaction six nurses said they experienced when interacting with individuals living in the dementia-specific care unit. They identified and repeatedly discussed the joy and fulfilment they experienced when caring for them, and considered this to be an essential element of quality nursing care. It was evident from the data that the nurses cared very deeply about these individuals, and despite increased risks to personal safety at work, they did not want to work anywhere else. This article reports on the largest and key theme identified in the study Labour of Love.

Background: Equity in providing care is also a major value in the nursing profession. Equitable care aims to provide the entire population with safe, efficient, reliable, and quality nursing services at all levels of health. Objectives: This study was conducted to explain the process of the realization of equity in nursing care. Research design: This qualitative study uses Glaser’s approach to grounded theory. Participants and research context: Sample selection began with convenience sampling and continued with purposive sampling. A total of 27 people were ultimately selected as the study subjects. Data were mainly collected through unstructured in-depth individual interviews plus observation and field notes. The data were then analyzed using the “Six C’s” coding family of Glaser. Ethical considerations: The study protocol was approved by the Tehran University of Medical Sciences (91D1302870). Written informed consent was also obtained from all subjects. Findings: According to the findings, participants’ main concern in providing equitable care is the rationing of nursing care. The identification of participants’ main concern led to the emergence of the core category of the study, that is, “nurses’ domination.” The other categories revolving around the core category were conceptualized according to the six C’s coding family: “nurses being dominated,” “nurses’ ineffective power in the health system,” “low attention to equitable care in health system,” “lack of clarity in measuring equitable care,” “the health structure’s inconsistency with equity,” and “the inefficiency of the care system.” Conclusion: There is a mutual relationship between providing fair care and nurses’ perceptions of equity. Nurses who have themselves experienced equity can provide their patients the experience of equity. This mutual relationship is actualized in a context in which fair care is clearly defined and demanded.
