OBJECTIVE Evaluate and correlate individual, work-related and organizational factors that influence adherence to standard precautions among nursing professionals of psychiatric hospitals in São Paulo. METHOD An exploratory cross-sectional study conducted with 35 nursing professionals, using the assessment tool for adherence to standard precautions through the Likert scale, ranging from 1 to 5. RESULTS Knowledge of the precautions received a high score (4.69); adherence received (3.86) and obstacles (3.78), while intermediaries and the scales of organizational factors received low scores (2.61). There was a strong correlation between the magnitude adherence scale and the personal protective equipment availability (r = 0.643; p = 0.000). The training scale for prevention of HIV exposure (p = 0.007) was statistically different between the nurses and nursing assistants. CONCLUSION The organizational factors negatively contributed to adherence to standard precautions, indicating that psychiatric institutions lack safe working conditions, ongoing training and management actions to control infections.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify the knowledge and adherence of nurses to the standard precautions in critical care units. Method: descriptive and cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, with the population of nurses from a university hospital in the Distrito Federal, Brazil. For data collection, three instruments were used. A semi-structured questionnaire with identification and occupational data of nurses, the questionnaire to evaluate knowledge to standard precautions and the Questionnaire of adherence to standard precautions. Descriptive analysis was used with absolute and relative frequency values. Results: the population was composed of 40 participating nurses, 75% were female, with an average age of 32.5 years, ranging from 24 to 50 years. Professionals with five or more years of training (67.5%) predominated, 25 (62.5%) had only one job and had experience in the area of critical patient care for more than three years. Although with a high percentage of accuracy, with regard to the moments that required hand hygiene, this frequency was 97.5%. Gloves are always used for intramuscular or subcutaneous injection by 67.5% of professionals, but 17.5% still consider it unnecessary to wear disposable caps and surgical shoe covers. The use of sharps, handling and reporting of occupational accidents were not performed as expected. Conclusion: gaps were identified in relation to the knowledge and adherence of nurses in units that provide care to critical patients of a university hospital with regard to standard precautions.

Nurses’ organisational and professional attitudes play an important role in their intent to leave nursing, a serious problem worldwide. The present study aimed to investigate the demographic and work-related characteristics, organisational-professional commitment, and job satisfaction, which are the predictors of nurses’ intent to leave their unit, organisation and profession. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 335 nurses working at a university hospital in Turkey. The multiple regression analysis was used to analyse the study data. While job satisfaction was the more powerful predictor of intent to leave the unit than were the commitment variables, affective commitment to the organisation was the more powerful predictor of intent to leave the organisation, and affective commitment to the profession was the more powerful predictor of intent to leave the profession. Different dimensions of commitment and job satisfaction are the predictors of intent to leave the unit, organisation and profession. The present study provided useful evidence for nurse managers and policy makers.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze standard precaution adherence and associated factors of nursing workers at a university hospital. Method: this is a study of mixed methods of convergent parallel strategy, carried out in Southern Brazil. The quantitative stage had 602 participants, using the instrument of sociodemographic and professional variables and the Instrument of Variables Related to Standard Precautions, analyzed using descriptive statistics. In the qualitative stage, a semi-structured interview was conducted with 24 workers, analyzed through content analysis. Results: the data showed an intermediate standard precaution adherence. In the Individual Factors dimension, the Prevention Effectiveness Scale showed high scores and the Risk Personality, Risk Perception and Knowledge about Occupational HIV Transmission scales, intermediate scores. In the dimension Work-related factors, both in the Obstacles to Following Standard Precautions Scale and in the Workload Scale, the scores were intermediate. In the Organizational Factors dimension, low scores were found for Climate of Safety and Training in Prevention of Exposure to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and intermediate for Personal Protective Equipment Availability. Qualitative data showed that workers often select patients who they think are at greatest risk for occupational transmission to use standard precautions. Conclusion: standard precaution adherence does not occur fully among participants. Data integration allowed to conclude that, among the main elements that influence this phenomenon, is the lack of clarity of participants as to the purpose, indication and principles of standard precautions.

Objective: To analyse the work-related exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and trace the source of COVID-19 infections in tertiary hospitals healthcare workers in light of the used PPE and their ability to maintain social distances and follow governmental restrictions. Design: Cross-sectional study Setting: Tertiary hospitals in Uusimaa region, Finland Participants: Of 1072 enrolled, 866 HCWs (588 nurses, 170 doctors and 108 laboratory and medical imaging nurses) from the Helsinki University Hospital completed the questionnaire by July 15th, 2020. The average age of participants was 42.4 years and 772 (89.0%) were women. The participants answered a detailed questionnaire of their PPE usage, ability to follow safety restrictions, exposure to COVID-19, the source of potential COVID-19 infection and both mental and physical symptoms during the first wave of COVID-19 in Finland. Main outcome measures: All participants with COVID-19 symptoms were tested with either RT-PCR or antibody tests. The infections were traced and categorised based on the location and source of infection. The possibility to maintain social distance and PPE usage during exposure were analyzed. Results: Of the HCWs that participated, 41 (4.7%) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, marking a substantially higher infection rate than that of the general population (0.3%); 22 (53.6%) of infections were confirmed or likely occupational, including 7 (31.8%) from colleagues. Additionally, 5 (26.3%) of other infections were from colleagues outside the working facilities. 14 (63.6%) of occupational infections occurred while using a surgical mask. No occupational infections were found while using an FFP2/3 respirator and aerosol precautions while treating suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients. Conclusions: While treating suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients, HCWs should wear an FFP2/3 respirator and recommended PPE. Maintaining safety distances in the workplace and controlling infections between HCWs should be priorities to ensure safe working conditions.

Assess adherence and knowledge to Standard Precautions (SP) and the impact of individual, work-related and organizational factors on the adherence of the nursing team to the aforementioned safety measures. Cross-sectional, correlational, descriptive study using the following instruments: socio-demographic questionnaire, Standard Precautions Adherence Questionnaire (SPAQ), SP Knowledge Questionnaire (SPKQ) and eight scales referring to an explanatory model of SP adherence. The final sample consisted of 172 professionals. The SPAQ obtained a mean of 71.94 points (SD = 6.40) and the SPKC, 15.44 (SD ± 1.48). Significant correlation (p≤0.001) between adherence and personality of risk, perception of risk, perception of obstacles to follow SP, training and availability of PPE was verified. We conclude that psychosocial and organizational factors were correlated with adherence. No statistical significance was found for the impact of knowledge on adherence to SP. However, it is necessary to raise awareness of the multifaceted nature of adherence to those referred to as security, which pervade individual but also organizational factors and therefore require direct and permanent involvement of management of health institutions, through education in health and infrastructure needed for safe behavior.

Brazil is the first country in the world to have broad coverage standard (NR-32) focused on protecting health workers exposed to biological risks. This study evaluated the degree of knowledge of the NR-32 Standard and the level of knowledge and compliance with the standard precautions. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 208 randomly selected health professionals; 93 of them were residents and 115 were physicians at a Brazilian Clinical Hospital. To collect information, the participants were interviewed and/or they completed semi-structured questionnaires divided into three domains: knowledge of the standard, knowledge of biosafety, and compliance with standard precautions. Cronbach's alpha was used to assess internal consistency of the scales of knowledge and compliance with values above +0.75 indicating excellent agreement. Multivariate linear regression was used to evaluate the predictors for compliance with NR-32, biosafety, and standard precautions. Mean knowledge of the NR-32 Standard was 2.2 (± 2.02) points (minimum 0 and maximum 7 points). The minimum expected mean was 5.25 points. The mean knowledge of biosafety was 12.31 (± 2.10) points (minimum 4 and maximum16 points). The minimum expected mean was 12.75 points. The mean compliance with standard precautions was 12.79 (± 2.6) points (minimum 6 and maximum 18 points). The minimum expected mean was 13.5 points. The individual means for using gloves, masks and goggles during procedures and for not recapping needles were 2.69, 2.27, 1.20 and 2.14, respectively. The factors associated with knowledge of the NR-32 were: greater knowledge amongst those who studied at a public university and who had knowledge of biosafety. The knowledge of the NR-32 Standard was low, but there was a good level of knowledge of biosafety issues. The compliance with standard precautions was acceptable in general, but was low for some of the evaluated precautions.

Abstract— Trait mindfulness received great attention in academic research in the past years. Early research about trait mindfulness in the professional area focused on stress reduction and well-being outcomes yet little known its impact on performance and work-related outcomes. This study aimed to know trait mindfulness’ impact on work engagement, with psychological capital as the mediator. This is cross-sectional study with 591 white-collar workers in Indonesia as the sample. The result showed that psychological capital partially mediates the relationship between trait mindfulness and work engagement even after controlling demographic and organizational factors (age, gender, education level, job tenure, job level, and organization type). The findings of this study indicated the positive benefits of developing trait mindfulness and psychological capital in employees.
