INTRODUCTION: Dental fluorosis is a disturbance of high prevalence caused by the ingestion of fluoride ions present mainly in toothpaste. Preventive measures to avoid it are still controversial. Thus, knowing the impact that fluorosis can cause on the population's quality of life it is important for planning public health policies.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of dental fluorosis on the quality of life of children and adolescents.MATERIAL AND METHOD: We studied 300 subjects aged 8 to 12 years divided into 4 groups: children (8-10 years) and adolescents (10 to 12 years) with and without fluorosis. The diagnosis of fluorosis was performed according to the index Thylstrup and Fejerskov and quality of life was evaluated using Child Perceptions Questionnaire 8-10 and 11-14. The socio-demographic characteristics of the patients were also evaluated. For inclusion in the sample, selected patients should present eight permanent incisors with crowns fully erupted. Patients who had extensive restorations, fractured teeth, other dental enamel defects and who wore braces were excluded.RESULT: Fluorosis was present in 64.7% of the patients analyzed and in most cases (80.3%) was mild or very mild. In children, the average overall score of the questionnaire was 15.9 for the group without fluorosis and 18.3 for the group with fluorosis (p = 0.255). The teenagers' score in the group without fluorosis was 26.1, while the group with fluorosis was 22.7 (p = 0.104).CONCLUSION: Dental fluorosis caused impact on the quality of life of the population analyzed only in the functional domain.

The aim of this study was to verify the prevalence of dental fluorosis in schoolchildren aged 6 to 15 and its possible association with the impacts on their daily activities. This study is observational, cross-sectional and analytical. A total of 513 schoolchildren from the city of Pinheiro Preto, SC, took part in this study. The children were examined by three calibrated dentists, after obtaining a kappa > 0.80. To assess the prevalence of fluorosis, clinical examinations were performed according to the methodology set forth by the 4th edition of the WHO. To assess the impact of fluorosis on their daily activities, a modified OIDP (Oral Impacts on Daily Performance) was adopted. The statistical analysis used was the Chi-squared test with a 5% significance level. Of the total number of children examined, 262 (51.1%) were of the female gender and 251 (48.9%) were of the male gender. In regard to the prevalence of fluorosis, 94 (18.3%) of the children presented this condition, while 419 children (81.7%) presented a normal condition. In regard to the severity of fluorosis, few children presented severe alterations. No association was found between dental fluorosis and gender (p = 0.646), between fluorosis and socioeconomic status (p = 0.848) or between fluorosis and access to public water supply system (p = 0.198). The activities that most affected children's daily performance were: oral hygiene (40.9%) and food intake or enjoying food (40.4%). None of the daily activities could be associated with the occurrence of dental fluorosis. The prevalence of dental fluorosis was consonant with the standards found for locations with optimum fluoride content in the water supply. The questionable and very slight levels of fluorosis were the most frequently found, without influence in the quality of life of the schoolchildren participating in the study.

Cervical cancer is one type of cancer with a high prevalence in women. Quality of life of someone with cervical cancer will decrease. Quality of life can also decrease because of chemotherapy regimens. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of cisplatin-vincristine-bleomycin and carboplatin-paclitaxel regimens on the quality of life of patients. Through this research how the difference in quality of life of patients with cervical cancer before and after chemotherapy could be known. Additionally, the  differences impact on the quality of life of the two regimens also were observed.  The study was conducted by using cross sectional design in hospitalization patients. Data were taken prospectively by conducting field observations. Measuring the quality of life was done using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire. Differences of domain values before and after chemotherapy in each regimen were analyzed by paired t-test (p <0.05). Quality of life difference between two regimens were analyzed by unpaired t test (p<0.05). The results showed that there was an increasing trend of the value of the functional domain, impairment of symptoms domain and an increase in the value of global health status domain after three cycles of chemotherapy of two regimens, except the symptoms of nausea and vomiting and loss of appetite that showed an increasing trend. Patients who received cisplatin-vincristine-bleomycin regimen showed a significant increasing (p = 0.009) in decreased of appetite symptom’s scores. No significant differences in the quality of life of patients who delivered chemotherapy regimen of cisplatin-vincristine-bleomycin compared to carboplatin-paclitaxel regimen.

Abstract Background Dysphagia is caused by sensorimotor function disruption of swallowing. In 2000, McHorney et al. first developed the SWAL-QOL (swallowing quality of life questionnaire). It is considered to be one of the initial self-rated tools which is dysphagia-specific. The SWAL-QOL has been translated into many languages such as Dutch, French, Chinese, Swedish, Persian, German, and Arabic (its linguistic validation was tested only but its validation and reliability has not been determined). The aim of this study was to determine the validity and reliability of the Arabic version of SWAL-QOL (ASWAL-QOL) in adult patients complaining of oropharyngeal dysphagia. Patients were enrolled from the outpatient swallowing clinic of Main University hospitals starting from the first of March 2018 to the end of May 2019. According to these criteria, sums of 100 patients were involved in the study and they completed the ASWAL-QOL together with Dysphagia Handicap Index (DHI). Results There was a strong correlation between the eating desire, eating duration, and food selection in ASWAL-QOL and the functional domain in (DHI). This was found as well between mental health and social functioning in ASWAL-QOL and emotional domain in (DHI) that was used for convergent validity. While checking reliability, nearly most of the domains demonstrated stability over short term as well as excellent internal consistency reliability. Conclusion The current study illustrated that the ASWAL-QOL questionnaire is a valid and reliable tool to evaluate the impact of difficulties in swallowing on the quality of life in patients suffering from oropharyngeal dysphagia.

Abstract The importance of frailty in heart failure (HF) patients has been increasingly recognized because of its high prevalence and its significantly adverse impact on prognosis and quality of life. Due to the impact of frailty on both prognosis and treatment of HF patients, all patients with HF, regardless of their chronological age, should be evaluated for the presence of, or the risk for developing frailty. However, although several instruments are available, there is still no consensus as to which is the best method to assess frailty in patients with HF. Therefore, a validated and easy to apply instrument to assess frailty in HF patients in daily practice is warranted.

ABSTRACT Objectives The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis and to assess the impact of dental fluorosis on oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children living in two Peruvian towns with different water fluoride levels. Methods A sample of 292 children between 11 and 14 years of age and both genders were selected among public and private primary schools in the 2 towns. Clinical oral examination was carried out using Dean’s index to assess the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis and the Child Perceptions Questionnaire 11-14 (CPQ 11-14) was used to evaluate the association between dental fluorosis and OHRQoL. Results Dental fluorosis prevalence was 75% and the moderate score was the most frequent (36%). The two towns have a low socioeconomic level and children from public schools predominate (74%). There was no impact of fluorosis on OHRQoL. It is possible that adolescents living in a context with very similar dental appearance of their peers build a sense of identity different than other populations, which can influence in their OHRQoL perception. Conclusions Even though dental fluorosis prevalence was very high it did not have impact on OHRQoL.

Aim. To evaluate the impact of a pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) cycle based on patient education, smoking cessation, physical exercises, and balanced nutrition in addition to standard therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD in patients with this condition. Subjects and methods. 70 patients (27 (38.6%) women and 43 (61.4%) men) aged 18 to 60 years (mean age, 48.31±0.64 years) with moderate COPD in remission concurrent with MS were examined. The comprehensive examination of the patients encompassed assessment of clinical, instrumental, and laboratory findings at baseline and 12 months. The patients were randomized into two groups: 1) 35 patients who underwent a RH cycle in addition to standard therapy for COPD; 2) 35 patients who received standard COPD treatment only. Results. Group 1 was found to have significant differences in reducing the number of patients with COPD exacerbations, emergency calls, hospitalizations, severity of clinical symptoms of COPD and their impact on the physical activity and health of the patients, as well as better quality of life and exercise tolerance. Conclusions. The therapeutic and preventive measures for patients with COPD and MS should involve educational programs and physical trainings, which are developed, by taking into account of a comorbidity in order to optimize therapeutic and preventive measures and to improve quality of life in this category of patients.
