The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of multiple supplement with different levels of castor meal (Ricinus communis L.) treated with calcium oxide on intake, on the total apparent digestibility of dietary components, on the efficiency of microbial synthesis and on the performance of beef heifers grazing Brachiaria decumbens during the dry-rainy transition period. The experimental area was composed of five 2.5-ha paddocks with availability of potentially digestible dry matter of 2,858.4 kg/ha. It was used 25 Nellore heifers and 10 crossbred with predominance of Zebu breed heifers at 13 months of age and body weight of 210 ± 0.8 kg in a completely randomized experimental design. Supplements contained approximately 25% of crude protein (CP) and they were formulated with 0; 33; 67 and 100% of castor meal replacing soybean meal. Daily weight gain was 366.1 g for animals in the control group and 439.7; 478.9; 556.3; and 493.9, respectively for those fed supplements with 100% of soybean meal and 33, 67 and 100% castor meal. There was no effect of treated castor meal levels on daily weight gain of the animals, which was higher in those animals fed supplements. Levels of castor meal had decreasing linear effect on intakes of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), ether extract (EE), digested dry matter and digestible neutral detergent fiver and on the intake of total digestible nutrients. Coefficients of apparent digestibility of DM, OM, CP, EE and non-fibrous carbohydrates were greater for animals under supplementation. Microbial efficiency, expressed in g of crude protein per kg of consumed TDN, did not differ among groups. Replacement of soybean meal by castor meal treated with calcium oxide does not harm animal performance.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of using multiple supplements with different levels of cottonseed meal 38% on intake, total apparent digestibility of dietary components, efficiency of microbial synthesis and productive performance of beef heifers in Brachiaria decumbens pasture during the rainy season. It was used 25 Nellore heifers and 10 crossbred heifers with predominance of Zebu breed at 16 months of age and with 249.8 ± 0.6 kg of body weight. It was used a complete random experimental design with five treatments and seven replicates. Supplements contained approximately 30% of crude protein (CP) and soybean meal replaced by cottonseed meal 38% at the levels 0; 33; 67 and 100%, (CS0, CS33, CS67 and CS100, respectively) evaluated in relation to a control group, which received only mineral mixture (MM) ad libitum. Daily weight gain was 397, 546, 570, 525 and 542 g, respectively, for the groups MM, CS0, CS33, CS67 and CS100. There was no effect of the levels of cottonseed meal 38% on daily weight gain, which differed among animals fed supplement and control group, however. Intakes of crude protein and non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC) in kg/day were greater in groups under supplementation. Coefficients of total apparent digestibility of CP and NFC were greater in animals fed supplements in relation to the control group. Increase on the replacement level of soybean meal by cottonseed meal had a positive linear effect on coefficients of total apparent digestibility of DM, organic matter and CP. There was no difference on microbial efficiency, expressed as g of crude protein per kg of TDN consumed by the animals under supplements and the ones of the control group, neither it was observed difference among levels of replacement of soybean meal by cottonseed meal. The use of cottonseed meal 38% replacing soybean meal in the diet does not harm performance of grazing beef heifers.

ABSTRACT: We developed and evaluated a fast and simple method to obtain suitable bone samples for densitometry and chemical analysis through biopsies of the 12th rib of cattle. The postoperative recovery, dry matter intake (DMI) and average daily weight gain (ADG) was evaluated in 36 Nellore steers, nine of which were randomly selected for the control group and 27 others were rib biopsied. Every 30 days, rib biopsy was performed in nine steers, using a corded-electric pistol-grip drill coupled with a hole saw of a 3mm diameter pilot drill bit. This rib biopsy technique provided a suitable sample obtained in a fast way and allowed the surgeon to work alone with the animal slightly sedated and restrained in the crush. Dry matter intake (DMI) was not affected in biopsied animals. At the end of the experimental period (116 days) the average daily weight gain (ADG) was similar in the steers biopsied or not. The described method provided rib samples from cattle suitable for densitometry and chemical analysis of bone tissue without effects on health and performance. This information could greatly increase the accuracy for the diagnosis of phosphorus deficiency in cattle raised on pasture and allow the evaluation of bone metabolism in experimental animals.

The research and economic experiment aimed at determining the most effective ratio of milk and vegetable protein in whole milk replacers WMR. It was carried out in four groups of calves with an initial live weight of 39.2–41.2 kg at the age of 10–30 days. The research has shown that WMR No. 1 consisted of (% by weight): dried whey – 53, vegetable fat – 16, vegetable protein – 30, vitamin-mineral complex – 1, No. 2 – skimmed milk powder – 15, whey powder – 47, vegetable fat – 16, vegetable protein – 21, vitamin- mineral complex – 1.0, No. 3 – 30; 41.5; 16.0; 11.5; 1.0. The ratio of vegetable and milk protein in the experimental WMR is made: 46 : 54; 37 : 63; 27.5 : 72.5 respectively. 1 kg of dairy product contained: 16.9 MJ of metabolizable energy and 196-200 g of crude protein. There was no significant difference in the consumption of crude protein between the groups. This indicator ranged within 309–317 g. The raw fat level in 1 kg of dry matter of diets for young experimental groups ranged within 186.9-190.1 g, concentration of metabolizable energy in dry matter of diet in experimental groups is made 17.48–18.02 MJ. 12.4–12.8 g of digestible protein accounted for 1 kg of metabolizable energy. It was established that the total protein content in blood serum of animals in experimental groups ranged within 45.3–50.7 g/l, which is 7.1–19.9 % higher than the reference value. As for sugar level in blood, one can trace the metabolic activity of carbohydrate metabolism of experimental calves’ body. Feeding young animals with milk replacer promoted the increase of glucose level by 5.7–17.1 % in comparison with the coevals of the control group. As a result, it was determined that in control group the whole milk in diets allowed to obtain higher average daily weight gain of 565, and in the experimental groups – 435–505 g, which is 11.2–23.0 % less. The research has shown that despite of higher body weight gain in the experimental group IV, the lower cost of WMR in group II allowed to reduce the diet cost by 26.5–39.2 % and the cost price of weight gain by 18.0–29.5 % compared with animals of the control, III and IV experimental groups. Key words: feed, WMR, young cattle, performance, economic efficiency.

The use of high-protein soybean meal in broiler diets provided for 38 days of fattening obtaining live weight of 2,336 g, average daily gain in live weight of 60.4 g, which is higher than in the control group by 135 g and 3.5 g, respectively. The highest rates were observed in chickens that consumed compound feed with high protein soybean meal, which was characterized by a high content of crude protein (47.0%) and good protein solubility (77.8%). It is proved that the use of soybean meal with a high content of SP 47.0% versus 42.0%, increases the live weight of chickens and reduces feed costs per 1 kilo of live weight gain.

The aim of the study was to estimate the basic production parameters and economic efficiency of fattening pigs when GM soybean meal is replaced with increasing proportions of blue lupine, as a native Polish plant source of protein. The experimental material comprised 50 fatteners divided into a control group (C) and four experimental groups (E1, E2, E3 and E4), with 10 pigs per group. Basic fattening parameters, i.e. daily weight gain and feed consumption per kg of body weight gain, were very good: 1201–1272 g and 2.35–2.59 kg/kg, respectively. These parameters were slightly better in group C than in the experimental groups. Comparison of the costs incurred and revenue obtained showed that the production of fatteners was found to be unprofitable, assuming market prices for the feed materials used, including lupine seeds. The financial result was a consequence of market determinants independent of the producer. The use of unprocessed lupine seeds as a replacement for GM soybean meal in fattening pigs proved to be clearly unprofitable.

Ten steers (five Shorthorns and five Brahman crossbreds) were individually housed in digestibility crates and fed low quality native pasture hay (0.47 % N) with the following supplements- 1. nil ; 2. molasses ; 3. urea ; 4. urea-molasses ; 5. urea-molasses. The hay was fed ad libitum except in treatment 5 where it was fed at the same level of roughage intake as in treatment 2. Intake and digestibility were recorded. Treatments 2, 3 and 4 had roughage dry matter intakes 27.8 %, 14.6 % and 65.4 % respectively greater than the hay alone group. There was no significant effect of treatment compared with the control group on the apparent digestibility of dry matter or organic matter, but the apparent digestibility of crude protein was significantly improved by a supplement containing urea. There was no effect of breed on apparent digestibility of dry matter, organic matter or crude protein but Brahman crossbreds consumed 20.0 % more dry matter than Shorthorns after intakes had been corrected for metabolic size.

ABSTRACT. This study was design to evaluated about  the using of total mixed fiber ammoniation  (TMFA) in ration on Ballinese beef performance. This study used an experimental method with Completely Randomized Design  (CRD) consisting of 4 types of treatmentt ration based on TMFA  usage level and 3 replications. The treatmentts were  R1 = 60% native grass (Control), R2 = 20% TMFA + 40% native grass, R3 = 40% TMFA + 20% native grass, R4 = 60% TMFA. The ration is added  with a 40% concentrate to obtain 100% ration. The comparison between forage and concentrate is 60:40. Parameters measured in vivo are performance   (ration intake, dry matter intake, crude protein intake, daily body weight gain and  ration efficiency).  The results showed that treatmentt significantly influenced (P <0.05) on  ration intake, dry matter intake, daily body weight gain and ration efficiency, but the treatmentt unsignificantly influenced (P>0.05) on crude protein intake. It can be concluded that the use of 60% TMF ammoniation in the ration shows the best result, that is  ration intake 6.89 kg/head/day, dry matter intake 6.25 kg / head / day, daily weight gain 0.47 kg / head / day and efficiency of ration 7.42%.Pemanfaatan Hasil Samping Pertanian dan Rumput Rawa  sebagai Bahan Amoniasi Total Mixed Fiber  (TMF) dalam Ransum Terhadap Performa Sapi BaliABSTRAK.

Four Holstein bull calves, 18–20 wk of age and averaging 190 kg were used to determine the apparent digestibility of soybean meal (SBM), Tower and Candle rapeseed meals (RSM). Diets containing the RSM were lower (P < 0.05) in dry matter (DM) digestibility than the SBM diet. Apparent digestibilities of DM, acid-detergent fibre (ADF) and energy were not different (P > 0.05) among the three oil meals. However, the rapeseed meals tended to result in lower DM and energy digestibilities compared to that of the SBM sample. Apparent digestibility of crude protein was significantly (P < 0.05) higher for the SBM than the Candle RSM and similar to Tower RSM. However, the data would suggest that the differences in apparent protein digestion coefficients are due to differences in protein contents of the experimental diets and the daily N consumption by the calves.
