Research on the use of fermented cacao seed skin waste (FCS) was carried out to determine dry matter, crude protein consumption and daily weight gain of local rams. Fifteen local rams aged 1.5 years with an initial body weight ranging from 14–20 kg were used for analyses. The local rams were grouped according to their initial body weight: K1 = 14–16 kg, K2 = 16–18 kg, K3 = 18–20 kg. Variables measured were dry matter and protein consumption, daily weight gain and feed conversion. The research method used a randomized block design. The treatments involved five levels of fermented cocoa FCS. Data analysis involved ANOVA and Duncan’s test. The results demonstrated a significant effect on dry matter and crude protein consumption (P 0.01) and of daily weight gain (P 0.05) but no significant effect with respect to feed conversion (P 0.05). The highest consumption of dry matter and protein in the P1 treatment and the highest daily weight gain for local rams was obtained in the P3 treatment. Hence, it was concluded that fermented cocoa seeds can replace up to 75% of field grass for sheep feed purposes.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of multiple supplement with different levels of castor meal (Ricinus communis L.) treated with calcium oxide on intake, on the total apparent digestibility of dietary components, on the efficiency of microbial synthesis and on the performance of beef heifers grazing Brachiaria decumbens during the dry-rainy transition period. The experimental area was composed of five 2.5-ha paddocks with availability of potentially digestible dry matter of 2,858.4 kg/ha. It was used 25 Nellore heifers and 10 crossbred with predominance of Zebu breed heifers at 13 months of age and body weight of 210 ± 0.8 kg in a completely randomized experimental design. Supplements contained approximately 25% of crude protein (CP) and they were formulated with 0; 33; 67 and 100% of castor meal replacing soybean meal. Daily weight gain was 366.1 g for animals in the control group and 439.7; 478.9; 556.3; and 493.9, respectively for those fed supplements with 100% of soybean meal and 33, 67 and 100% castor meal. There was no effect of treated castor meal levels on daily weight gain of the animals, which was higher in those animals fed supplements. Levels of castor meal had decreasing linear effect on intakes of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), ether extract (EE), digested dry matter and digestible neutral detergent fiver and on the intake of total digestible nutrients. Coefficients of apparent digestibility of DM, OM, CP, EE and non-fibrous carbohydrates were greater for animals under supplementation. Microbial efficiency, expressed in g of crude protein per kg of consumed TDN, did not differ among groups. Replacement of soybean meal by castor meal treated with calcium oxide does not harm animal performance.

The effect of four levels of inclusion (0; 450; 900 and 1,350g T-1) of Ractopamine hydrochloride was assessed concerning weight gain, feed conversion, dry matter intake, carcass traits and quality of castrated male cattle meat in confinement. Forty Nellore steers were used, with an average age of 26 months and initial average weight of 423.4±2.7kg, in a randomized block experimental design with four treatments and ten replications. The diet was fixed with the ratio of forage to concentrate dry matter of 75.3:24.7. A Linear positive effect observed was the inclusion of Ractopamine on daily weight gain and linear negative effect on feed conversion, highlighting the improvements with the increasing inclusion of Ractopamine hydrochloride. In relation to carcass traits, the linear effect was negative for fat thickness and no differences were found regarding the hot carcass weight ; carcass yield; area, width and depth of rib eye area of the Longissimus dorsi muscle, and noble courts. In relation to dry matter intake, the comparison of the treatments demonstrated that Ractopamine didn't influence negatively, which highlights its positive effect on the animal performance. The use of Ractopamine improves performance and decreases de amount of superficial fat in male nellore carcass in confinement.

The aim of the study was to estimate the basic production parameters and economic efficiency of fattening pigs when GM soybean meal is replaced with increasing proportions of blue lupine, as a native Polish plant source of protein. The experimental material comprised 50 fatteners divided into a control group (C) and four experimental groups (E1, E2, E3 and E4), with 10 pigs per group. Basic fattening parameters, i.e. daily weight gain and feed consumption per kg of body weight gain, were very good: 1201–1272 g and 2.35–2.59 kg/kg, respectively. These parameters were slightly better in group C than in the experimental groups. Comparison of the costs incurred and revenue obtained showed that the production of fatteners was found to be unprofitable, assuming market prices for the feed materials used, including lupine seeds. The financial result was a consequence of market determinants independent of the producer. The use of unprocessed lupine seeds as a replacement for GM soybean meal in fattening pigs proved to be clearly unprofitable.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of using multiple supplements with different levels of cottonseed meal 38% on intake, total apparent digestibility of dietary components, efficiency of microbial synthesis and productive performance of beef heifers in Brachiaria decumbens pasture during the rainy season. It was used 25 Nellore heifers and 10 crossbred heifers with predominance of Zebu breed at 16 months of age and with 249.8 ± 0.6 kg of body weight. It was used a complete random experimental design with five treatments and seven replicates. Supplements contained approximately 30% of crude protein (CP) and soybean meal replaced by cottonseed meal 38% at the levels 0; 33; 67 and 100%, (CS0, CS33, CS67 and CS100, respectively) evaluated in relation to a control group, which received only mineral mixture (MM) ad libitum. Daily weight gain was 397, 546, 570, 525 and 542 g, respectively, for the groups MM, CS0, CS33, CS67 and CS100. There was no effect of the levels of cottonseed meal 38% on daily weight gain, which differed among animals fed supplement and control group, however. Intakes of crude protein and non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC) in kg/day were greater in groups under supplementation. Coefficients of total apparent digestibility of CP and NFC were greater in animals fed supplements in relation to the control group. Increase on the replacement level of soybean meal by cottonseed meal had a positive linear effect on coefficients of total apparent digestibility of DM, organic matter and CP. There was no difference on microbial efficiency, expressed as g of crude protein per kg of TDN consumed by the animals under supplements and the ones of the control group, neither it was observed difference among levels of replacement of soybean meal by cottonseed meal. The use of cottonseed meal 38% replacing soybean meal in the diet does not harm performance of grazing beef heifers.

The objective was to evaluate the associative effect of monensin sodium to virginiamycin on the performance, dry matter intake, apparent digestibility and ingestive behavior of steers in the initial feedlot phase. The experiment lasted for 30 days, divided into two experimental periods. Thirty-six Angus Nellore steers, non-castrated, with a mean age of 10 months and an average weight of 300 kg, were divided into 18 pens. Animals were assigned to three treatments with six replications each, with the inclusion of the following additives: T1-monensin sodium, dose of 200 mg day-1; T2-monensin sodium, dose of 125 mg day-1 + virginiamycin, dose of 125 mg day-1; and T3-monensin sodium, dose of 200 mg day-1 + virginiamycin, dose of 125 mg day-1. All experimental procedures were previously submitted to the UNICENTRO Committee for Ethics in Animal Experimentation (CEUA), and were approved for execution (Official Letter 021/2019). The combination of monensin sodium with virginiamycin at a dose of 200 mg + 125 mg animal day-1 showed greater (P < 0.05) average daily weight gain (1.919 kg day-1) and better feed conversion (4.27 kg DM kg of weight gain-1) compared to diets with monensin alone (200 mg animal day-1) or monensin combined with virginiamycin (125 mg + 125 mg animal day-1), even with no significant (P> 0.05) difference in DM intake, with a mean value of 7.88 kg animal day-1. Regardless of the isolated or combined supplementation of the additives, no significant differences were detected in the analysis of the feeder and feces scores, ingestive behavior, and rectal temperature or infrared thermography during the evaluation period. The combination of monensin sodium with virginiamycin at 200 mg + 125 mg animal day-1 proved to be efficient in the initial feedlot period, determined by the greater weight gain and better feed conversion observed in this study.

Abstract This study aims to improve the production performance of Murrah buffalo which covers average weight gain, feed consumption, and feed conversion by increasing probiotic feed. The research was conducted on the herd of Murrah buffalo at Kelok Rambai, Kapau Village, West Sumatera, Indonesia. Fifteen Murrah buffaloes with three to five years of age were used in the research. There were three treatments conducted including P1 = basal feed + probiotics; P2 = P1 + concentrate (cassava leaf pellet); and P3 = P1 + commercial concentrate (pellet). All three treatments were also given 7 cc/head/month of probiotics. The results of the study with probiotic feeding on Murrah buffalo showed the average feed consumption of P2 (36.55), P3 (35.99), P1 (35.74) and daily weight gain (DWG) P2 (1.09 kg/head/day), P3 (0.91 kg/head/day), P1 (0.55 kg/head/day) did not show a significant difference, while in feed conversion, P2 (0.68 ), P1 (0.46), P3 (0. 31) it showed a significant difference (p>0.05). This study concludes that the provision of basal ration plus cassava leaf pellets showed significant results on feed conversion in Murrah buffalo but did not show significant differences in feed consumption and DWG. However, it showed a substantial enough average of P2 that could be used as a feed supplement in Murrah buffalo.

A study was carried out to investigate the effect of feeding two varieties of cowpea haulm on  growth performance, nutrient digestibility and nitrogen balance in Red Sokoto bucks. The  experiment consisted of 15 Red Sokoto bucks of average weight of 10kg, which were balanced  for weight and randomly assigned to three dietary treatments with five bucks per treatment in  a complete randomize design. The three treatment diets consisted of Brachairia decumbens  hay as basal diet and concentrate diets which were supplemented with cowpea haulms at 0%  (Control), 10% (SAMPEA14) and 10% (SAMPEA15). The study lasted for 90 days. Total dry  matter intake (TDMI, g/day), total weight gain (TWG, kg), faecal (unit) and urine (unit)  outputs were recorded. Results indicated that the TDMI were different (P<0.05) with higher  intake (237.64 g/day) in bucks fed control diet, followed by 223.00 g/day 10% SAMPEA 15  and 10% haulm of Sampea 14 (206.49g/day) in the concentrate. The TWG and average daily  weight gain increased by 59.77% and 59.76%, respectively with respect to 10% SAMPEA 14  haulm inclusion compared to the control diet. The digestibilities of dry matter (DM), crude  protein (CP), crude fibre (CF), ether extract (EE) and nitrogen free extract (NFE) were  higher (P<0.05) in bucks fed diet constaining 10% SAMPEA 14 inclusion level compared to  the treatment diets. The quantity of N retained by the bucks was higher (P<0.05) with the  inclusion of 10% of SAMPEA 14 (3.79 g/day) compared to those fed 10% SAMPEA 15 (1.18  g/day) and the control diet (0.68 g/day). It is concluded that farmers should include 10%  SAMPEA 14 in concentrate diet of Red Sokoto bucks for optimum performance under smallholder production system. L'étude a duré 90 jours.
