The reproductive period and fecundity of the inseminating cheirodontine Compsura heterura and of the externally fertilizing cheirodontine Odontostilbe pequira, from tropical and subtropical regions of Brazil, respectively, are described. The reproductive period of C. heterura lasted from January to April 2002, while O. pequira showed two reproductive periods, the first during September and October 2001 (spring), and the second between January and February 2002 (summer). Smaller classes of SL of females of O. pequira predominated in the second reproductive period, suggesting individuals born in the first period become shortly sexually mature, participating in the second reproductive period. In C. heterura, from a tropical region, temperature showed significant correlations with the variation in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) for both sexes, and rainfall showed significant correlation with the variation in the GSI only for females. In O. pequira, from a subtropical region, photoperiod was the only factor that showed significant correlations with the GSI variation in both sexes. The mean relative fecundity of C. heterura was 0.55 oocytes per milligram of total weight, similar to that of other cheirodontines with external fertilization, refuting the hypothesis, at least in Cheirodontinae, that insemination provides diminishing energy expenditure for the production of oocytes, due to a greater probability of fertilization. The mean relative fecundity of O. pequira was 0.8 oocytes per milligram of total weight, the largest known among cheirodontines. Spermatozoa were found inside the ovaries of maturating, mature and semi-spent females of C. heterura supporting the hypothesis of temporal separation between courtship and spawning. The largest relative weight of testis and the presence of sperm in maturing ovaries outside the reproductive period in C. heterura support the hypothesis that males of inseminating species make a greater investment in gonadal development than those externally fertilized.

In order to evaluate aspects of the reproductive biology of Rhaphiodon vulpinus in the Upper and Middle Tocantins River, samples were taken monthly from October, 1999 through September, 2001, by means of gill nets. Males, which were more abundant than females (chi2 146.87: df=1: p<0.05), matured at a smaller size. The reproductive period of the species extended essentially from November through January, with a peak of activity in November. Fecundity, with an estimated mean value of 98,185 oocytes, varied from 38,177 to 215,841 oocytes, and it did not correlate with the length of the individual female analyzed (r=0.4663: p=0.206). Relative fecundity was 130.6 oocytes/g total weight. Mature oocytes had a mean diameter of 0.98 mm, corresponding to a volume of 0.50 mm³.

From August, 1996 to December, 1997, 293 of ''dourado'' specimens, Salminus maxillosus (Valencienes, 1840), of various sizes, were caught in Mogi-Guaçu River, Emas Falls, for hematologic studies. Total weight (Wt in g) and length (Lt in cm) were taken for each individual animal. Smears were prepared from blood samples and utilized for differential leukocyte counts (lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, special granulocytic cell and immature cells). The mean percentages of leukocytes were determined according to sex and stage of gonadal maturation (immature, in maturation, mature, spent and resting). Significant differences between male and female occurred only for the special granulocytic cell. In analyzing the leukocyte profile during gonadal development, only female showed significant differences in mean percentages of lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes and eosinophils.

The commercially important migratory fishProchilodus brevisis from the Neotropical region, and understanding the reproductive ecology of this potamodromous fish is essential for its conservation and management. This study investigated the length-mass relationship, sex ratio, length at first gonadal maturity, gonadal development stages, gonadosomatic index, condition factor, and reproductive period ofP. brevis. Temporal distribution of rainfall, temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, pH, and electrical conductivity of the water were related to the reproductive period of this fish. Rainfall seems to be the main environmental factor which modulates changes in limnological parameters and the timing of the spawning period of this fish.P. brevismigrates into lower reaches of the river to feed during the dry season and returns to the upper reaches during the rainy season to spawn. Inadequate facilities for migration create obstacles for spawning success of this ecologically important fish.

Reproductive steroid concentration and gonadal development as well as plasma cortisol were investigated during the reproductive period (April to October) of the Pacific red snapper Lutjanus peru, a commercial and important local fishery species in the surrounding areas of Bahía La Paz, Gulf of California, Mexico. Gonads in April were immature and characterized by the presence of oocytes at the chromatin nucleolar and perinucleolar stages. In the next month, more than 50% of the fish showed gonads in vitellogenesis, characterized by the presence of cortical alveoli and early vitellogenic (V1) oocytes. Late vitellogenic and mature gonads were present in July, August and September. Postovulatory follicles were observed only in gonads collected in August, indicating spawning activity of these individuals. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) increased significantly (p <0.05) from April and May to July, when it reached its maximum value. A significant increase (p <0.05) in plasma testosterone (T) was also observed in July compared to previous months, and plasma estradiol (E2) concentration was significantly higher (p <0.05) in September than in April. Cortisol concentration was significantly higher (p <0.05) in September than in May. Significant differences (p <0.05) between gonadal stages were observed for GSI and E2 but not for T. We conclude that the Pacific red snapper, in the surrounding areas of Bahía de la Paz, showed an asynchronous ovarian growth starting in May when water temperature increased and that was characterized by several spawning events.

In this paper we describe some aspects of the reproduction and development of secondary sexual characters of Bryconamericus iheringii, based on the analysis of 194 females and 210 males collected monthly in the rio Vacacaí (30º21'34"S and 54º18'48"W), from April 2001 to March 2002. The reproductive period occurred from September to January (spring and summer in the Southern Hemisphere), as described for other characids of the same area. The absolute fecundity mean was 933.71 ± 303.10 oocytes, and the relative fecundity mean was 0.36 ± 0.08 oocytes per mg of total weight, being the species a multiple spawner. There was no correlation between the values of GSI and variation of biotic (stomach repletion and hepatosomatic indexes) and abiotic data (rainfall, day length and temperature) but we suggest that these factors can influence the reproduction of the species acting as "starters" of the beginning of gonadal maturation. Fin-ray hooks consist in a sexually dimorphic character of the species. Well developed hooks were found mainly in mature males, during the reproductive period and in the largest individuals.

The reproductive period and its relation with somatic and abiotic factors, the relative and absolute fecundity, spawning type, length of first maturation and sex ratio is describe for Gymnotus aff.carapo from a small lake at Itapuã State Park, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Gymnotus aff. carapo presents a relatively long reproductive cycle extending from November/2003 to March/2004. Decreases in water conductivity and increases in dissolved oxygen are correlated with increased gonadal development in males. In females, seasonal increases in temperature and photoperiod and decreases in dissolved oxygen are correlated with increased gonadal development. The mean absolute fecundity was 915.3 oocytes, and mean relative fecundity 0.20 oocytes/mg body weight. Egg size distributions indicate multiple spawning. The size of first maturation was 141 mm in females and 146 mm in males. The sex ratio was 1:1, with a male bias only in smaller size classes.

Background: Fecundity is an important parameter in fisheries that predicts the reproductive capability of fish stock. Information on the fecundity of Common carp is helpful in estimating the amount of offspring produced in spawning season, which is essential for the stock assessment of the species. Assessment of the fecundity of a fish is essential for evaluating the commercial potentialities of its stock, life history, practical culture and actual management of the fishery. Common carp is a commercially important fish which has the potential to meet the demand of food in the country. Scanty of data is available on fecundity parameter of common carp in Kashmir waters. Therefore, this research work aims to estimate the fecundity of Common carp collected from the Dal lake of Kashmir. Methods: The present study aims to estimate the fecundity of Common carp, [Cyprinus carpio var. communis] existing in Dal Lake, Kashmir. The 30 fish samples were collected once every month from the month of January 2018 to December 2018. Fishes were brought to Fisheries Resource Management (FRM), Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-K Laboratory for the estimation of total length, weight of fishes and weight of ovaries. Gravimetric and actual counting method was used for the estimation of fecundity. Result: It was observed that the number of eggs varied from 16650 (for a fish with total length 180mm and total weight 120 g) to 129000 (for a fish with total length 430 mm and total weight 1300 g. The mean absolute fecundity was recorded as 68864.07± 6563.59 for a fish with a mean total length of 301.43 ± 13.93 mm and mean total weight of 435.1 ± 66.51 g. The relative fecundity ranged from 99.2-240.8 and the mean relative fecundity was 185.96. Significant positive correlation was found between fish weight and absolute fecundity. (r= 0.907, p less than 0.01), fish length and absolute fecundity (r= 0.976, p less than 0.01), Ovary weight and absolute fecundity (r= 0.998, p less than 0.01). Relative fecundity showed a significant negative correlation with weight, length and absolute fecundity (r= -0.747, p less than 0.01; r= -0.419, p less than 0.05 and r= -0.460, p less than 0.05 respectively.

Foi realizado o estudo do comprimento total, peso total e peso das gônadas; dos índices gonadais e do fator de condição (K), em relação à variação da densidade populacional em três diferentes tratamentos do experimento com Trichogaster trichopterus e, além dos estudos citados, também foi realizada no experimento com Hemichromis bimaculatus, a análise dos estádios de maturação gonadal encontrados, em relação à quantidade de alimento ofertado em quatro diferentes tratamentos. O estudo do fator de condição em relação à quantidade de alimento ofertado em três diferentes tratamentos dos experimentos com Hyphessobrycon callistus e Trichogaster trichopterus também foi realizado. O comprimento total, peso total e peso das gônadas revelaram a tendência de serem inversamente proporcionais à densidade populacional. Porém o comprimento total e o peso total, de H. bimaculatus, revelaram a tendência de serem diretamente proporcionais à quantidade de alimento ofertado. Tanto o índice gonadal como o índice gônado-somático foram mais elevados no tratamento de densidade populacional intermediária, em T. trichopterus. Os menores valores destes índices, em H. bimaculatus, foram registrados no tratamento 3 e os maiores valores nos tratamentos 1 e 2, respectivamente. Em T. trichopterus, experimento quanto à variação da densidade populacional, observaram-se valores muito semelhantes do fator de condição entre os tratamentos 1 e 2. O maior e o menor valor do fator de condição em H. bimaculatus foram observados nos tratamentos 1 e 4, respectivamente. Em H. callistus, o maior e o menor valor do fator de condição foram encontrados, respectivamente, nos tratamentos de maior oferta alimentar e de oferta alimentar intermediária. Em T. trichopterus, o fator de condição revelou a tendência de ser diretamente proporcional à quantidade de alimento ofertado. A espécie H. bimaculatus não evidenciou apresentar tendência à correlação positiva entre maturação gonadal e quantidade de alimento ofertado. Abstract Studies on the Trichogaster trichopterus gonadal development in regard to the variation of the population density were carried out. The following parameters were studied: the total length, total weight and gonads weight; the gonads indexes and the condition factor (K). In the experiment with Hemichromis bimaculatus was concomitantly analysed the maturity stages of the gonads in relation to the quantity of nourishment offered. The nourishment influence in the condition factor (K) of Hyphessobrycon callistus and Trichogaster trichopterus has been analysed. The total length, total weight and gonads weight were estimated to be inversely proportional to the population density. However, the total length and total weight in H. bimaculatus were estimated to be directly proportional to the amount of nourishment offered. The gonadal index and the gonadosomatic index were higher in the treatment of the intermediate population density, in T. trichopterus. The smallest values of these gonads indexes, in H. bimaculatus, were recorded in treatment 3 and the biggest values in treatment 1 and 2, respectively. In T. trichopterus, an experiment about the variation of the population density, similar values were observed between treatment 1 and 2, in relation to the conditional factor. The biggest and smallest values about the conditional factor, in H. bimaculatus, were observed in treatment 1 and 4, respectively. In H. callistus, the highest and the lowest values of the conditional factor were observed, respectively, in the treatment of the highest level of nourishment offered and in the treatment of the intermediate nourishment offered. In T. trichopterus, the conditional factor tended to be directly proportional to the amount of nourishment offered. In the species H. bimaculatus the tendency on the positive correlation between gonadal maturation and amount of nourishment offered is not evident.

The gonadal development of the characin Astyanax aff. bimaculatus from Funil Reservoir, an impoundment in the middle reaches of the Paraiba do Sul River in southeastern Brazil was analysed through histological, histochemical and histometric techniques, and the spawning season was determined. Unbalanced sex ratio was found, with females outnumbering and reaching larger sizes than males. The following stages of oogenic cell development were identified for females: primary growth, pre-vitellogenic (cortical alveolar) and vitellogenic. In males, the following stages were determined: spermatogonia primary and secondary, spermatocyte primary and secondary, spermatid and spermatozoa. The spawning occurs most of the year, peaking in January-February, as indicated by the gonadosomatic index. In the peak of the spawning period, the condition factor and hepatosomatic indices decreased suggesting use of stored body energy reserves during the reproduction. Spawning in batches, small-sized oocytes and a long reproductive season suggest that Astyanax aff. bimaculatus fits to an opportunist strategy. Such strategy may facilitate the use of a wide range of lentic and lotic body waters in the Neotropical region.

This work presents the results of a study about the reproductive behavior of riverine women living in the Sustainable Development Reserve Amanã, in the Middle Solimões region, state of Amazonas. The study was done in 2001 with the objective of identify aspects of the reproductive behavior of 83 women, collected through reproductive history methodology. These women live in small localities along the rivers and lakes in the middle of the Amazonian forest. The study identified that these women initialize their reproductive period at the age of 17, in average, and the mean age of their last pregnancy occurs at the age of 42, considering those above 50 years old. 36% of these 83 women had lost one or more of their children before the age of five. Only 16% use contraceptives and 12% are sterilized. They don’t have access to the basic health assistance in a regular basis and the local midwives are extremely important in their assistance during pregnancy and delivery. This study em phasizes the importance of reproductive health programs including those social and cultural local conditions.
