This study aims to improve the organizational system of the Korean Medical Association by comparing its governance to that of the Austrian Medical Chamber. The Austrian Medical Chamber is a legal entity and an interest group, composed of the members of nine provincial Medical Chambers. The composition, authority, and duties of the Austrian Medical Chamber are detailed in the Medical Law, and its publicity as a self-regulatory institution is legally guaranteed, such as health care policy decisions and participation in the justice system. The Austrian Medical Chamber enhances the consistency and connectivity of its work with the provincial Medical Chambers through the obligatory participation of their board members. It allows the provincial Medical Chambers to responsibly perform their duties. The Austrian Medical Chamber and related medical laws can be a role model for the Korean Medical Association to achieve authority as a self-regulatory organization.

ObjectivesThe recruitment of medical graduates into and retention within the specialty will be one of the major problems confronting psychiatry.AimThe aim of the study was to explore how many physicians intended to be psychiatrists and how many of those physicians practising as psychiatrists originally desired this area of expertiseMethodsFor this cross-sectional survey, a self-administered questionnaire with 12 items was sent to all licensed physicians (n = 8127), based on the register of the Vienna Medical Chamber in June 2000Results2736 respondents (34%) completed the questionnaire validly. 50.3% (m: 43.2%; f: 58.6%) of all physicians in Vienna did not achieve their desired subject, whilst 86% of psychiatrists did so. These study results represent the highest percentage compared to other medical specialisations. Further, 6% of all physicians (m: 5%; f: 7%) initially defined psychiatry as their desired medical career regardless whether they attained this specialty later on or not. An average of 9% of all physicians changed their minds about their preferred specialty during their training.ConclusionsCompared with other specialties the average number of physicians who practice a specialty different from the one desired is low in psychiatry. We think that this fact constitutes a favourable aspect with regard to recruitment of graduates for specialty training in psychiatry. Data found in this survey are similar to other studies conducted in German speaking countries, when focussing on psychiatry as desired career.

The monography "Medicine, Law and Society: Contemporary Dilemmas IV" is already the fourth such book. It contains current contributions related to the central theme of liability in healthcare. In their contributions, the authors analyze and discuss various open legal, ethical, and medical issues and dilemmas facing healthcare today in Slovenia and comparative legislations and globally. The monography contains content that addresses selected topics related to civil and criminal liability issues (e.g., medical chamber, doctors, other health professionals, patients,…), euthanasia, surrogate motherhood, and mental health. The second group of articles focuses on current topics, which connect law, sport and medicine (e.g., gender and sex reassignment, doping, athlete employment issues, responsibility in sport, etc.). The third group consists of contributions related to the topics of infectious diseases (Covid-19, SARS, H1N1, Ebola…) and selected aspects regarding medicines (financing of medicines, search for new medicines, pharmaceutical law…).

PurposeThe COVID-19 pandemic caused a massive healthcare crisis. To investigate what makes healthcare system resilient and physicians better at coping during a crisis situation, our study investigated the role risk exposure, such as working at COVID-19 entry points, sleep, and perceived work safety played in reducing negative psychological functioning at work, as well as their effects on adverse and potentially fatal incidences of compromised safety and medical errors.MethodsOur study included a representative sample of 1,189 physicians, from all 12 Slovenian regions and all medical occupations, as registered by the Medical Chamber of Slovenia. For the purposes of this study, a Questionnaire of Sleep and Psychological Functioning at Work was developed in the form of an online retrospective self-report. Additionally, our study included items assessing physicians perceived work safety and frequency of negative outcomes (compromised safety and medical errors) during the first month of the Covid-19 epidemic.ResultsPhysicians working at COVID-19 entry points were more likely to experience night awakening, slept less than 5 h per night, experience nightmares, and had lower levels of psychological functioning in comparison to other physicians. Both hypothesized models showed adequate fit. A higher score on the sleep scale (sleep quantity, sleep quality, and shorter sleep latency) has been shown to predict lower levels of negative psychological functioning at work and, indirectly, reduced incidences of compromised safety and medical errors. Contrary to our expectations, no significant direct effect of sleep on compromised safety and medical errors was found. When perceived work safety was added into the model, the model showed improved fit, with perceived work safety predicting better sleep, less negative psychological functioning at work, and less compromised safety.ConclusionSleep and safety both play an important role in reducing negative psychological functioning at work and, by doing so, decreasing the negative and potentially fatal incidents during the pandemic, such as compromised safety and medical errors. Further, research is needed to see how medical guidelines can be updated to ensure physicians sleep and that their safety is protected.

The responsibility of the Medical Chamber of Slovenia (Chamber) is reflected in the attitude towards the membership that goes through the mission, which is to represent and promote the professional, economic and social interests of doctors, care for the high professional competence and ethics of the conduct of doctors, the reputation and honor of the medical profession, ensuring the fulfillment of medical duties, promoting the rights of doctors, and the professional and safe treatment of patients. The Chamber's responsibility to the health care system lies primarily in proposals for its improvement and elimination of errors, which are recognized by the Chamber in monitoring its operations as well as through controls within the public authority. Responsibility to the company is manifested by the fact that the general public also informs and directs them to find better conditions for the functioning of the system and to help in crisis management. An example of the Chamber's work in the face of the SARS-CoV 2 pandemic causing COVID-19 is given.

The Lubomirski Summer Palace is one of the most valuable not sacred monuments of Rzeszow architecture. It was erected in the late baroque style at the end of the 17th century by Hieronim Augustyn Lubomirski as part of a large garden complex around the castle. Times of his glory fall in the mid-18th century. At that time, palace with the surrounding park was extended by Jerzy Ignacy Lubomirski and became a residence willingly visited for recreational purposes. The last private owners of the Palace were Nieć family who sold it to the Regional Medical Chamber in Rzeszów. Since 2014, the palace and its surroundings have been renovated for the seat of the Chamber. The subject of this article is a detailed presentation of the scope and method of the palace interior renovation. This renovation was carried out between 2014 and 2016 on the basis of previously prepared architectural building documentation and detailed renovation technology developed by the author of the article (adapted to the technical condition of the object). The article describes in detail the technical condition of the building before renovation, the scope of renovation works, problems encountered and the final effect - restored interiors of the building with few historic details of their décor.

The issue of the continuous improvement of professional qualifications by medical doctors is of utmost importance both from the point of view of doctors and their patients. Acquiring new knowledge and skills is an important element of a doctor’s professional career. A doctor who raises his qualifications guarantees better medical care for a patient. The professional self-governing body of doctors constitutes a significant element in the postgraduate education of doctors. It participates in the education of interns and in the procedure of acquiring the title of specialist. It also supervises and organizes the process of doctors’ mandatory continuous education. A majority of the tasks related to doctors’ professional education is performed by regional chambers. The Wielkopolska Medical Chamber organizes training sessions and courses for its members, which are one of the forms of fulfilling the requirement of professional improvement, reimburses a portion of the costs borne by the doctors in connection with improving their professional qualifications, and it establishes cooperation with domestic and foreign academic institutions to provide doctors from Wielkopolska with an opportunity to partake in training. These activities of the medical association, combined with the organs of professional liability of doctors, allow the patients to hope that when visiting a doctor they encounter a specialist who will take the utmost care of them.
