Stability of Rosa agrestis, R. canina, R. dumalis and R. rubiginosa regenerants after shoot tip cryopreservation was monitored with the use of biochemical markers and pollen quality assessment in matured plants cultivated in the field. The results of rosa pollen and hip evaluation revealed no significant differences between post-cryopreserved regenerants and control plants; however, variations in the assessed markers were noted between Rosa species. Analyses of hips confirmed high levels of vitamin C in these plants; the highest was observed in R. dumalis (750–870 mg/100 g fresh weight). High total antioxidant activity (TAC) was as follows: DPPH – 50–250 mM TE/100 dry weight, FRAP – 80–180 mM TE/100 g dry weight. The present study showed a high content of flavonoids (TFC) and phenols (TPC). Post-cryopreserved plants retained pollen specific for Caninae: numerous anthers, abundant pollen, poor pollen germination and viability and typical pollen morphology. This study demonstrates new tools for evaluating the fidelity of post-cryopreserved regenerants.

The bioactive compounds, as well as the in vitro antioxidant activity of two Savoy cabbage cultivars, Dama and Leticia, grown in west of Spain under similar conditions were identified, quantified and compared. We found that cv. Dama presented in general betters results when compared with cv. Leticia. Cv. Dama presented higher concentrations of chlorophyll a (2.26 mg/100 g fresh weight), total phenolic content (102.71 mg of chlorogenic acid equivalent/100 g fresh weight) and total intact glucosinolates (195.22 µmol of sinigrin equivalent/100 g fresh weight). Thus, cv. Dama exhibited higher values of in vitro antioxidant activity.

The present study aimed to determine the total polyphenol content and total antioxidant activities of ten selected seasonal fruit extracts grown in Sri Lanka. The aqueous refluxed fruit extracts (4h) were used at the initial concentration of 0.05 g/mL. The total polyphenol content was determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The total antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), FRAP (ferric reducing power) and TBA (thiobabituric acid assay) assays with L-ascorbic acid as the reference compound. The total polyphenol content of the fruit extracts varied from 0.81±0 to 17.54±0.50 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalents) per gram of dry weight. The antioxidant activities ranged in IC50 of 46.60±0.60 to 367.90 ± 4.90 μg/mL, 3.41±0.02 to 50.46±1.02 µM, 30.62±0.50 to 182.64±0.90 mg AAE (L-ascorbic acid equivalents) per gram of dry weight for DPPH, FRAP, TBA assays, respectively. All aqueous fruit extracts exert dose dependent in vitro antioxidant activities in different degrees. Among the selected fruit extracts S. carophylatum, P. zeylanica, A. comosus exert relatively high total antioxidant activity together with high total polyphenol content. Hence, the selected fruit extracts are deserved to be as potent sources for antioxidant lead compounds in the development of nutraceuticals using the above edible fruits.

ABSTRACT Murici is a typical Brazilian Savanna fruit widely consumed by local communities. This study aimed to evaluate the postharvest quality of murici fruits as a function of storage and packing. The experiment followed a triple factorial scheme (3 x 2 x 9), evaluating three packing materials (polypropylene, low-density polyethylene and nylon/polyethylene), two atmosphere conditions (vacuum and non-vacuum) and 9 days of analysis (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 days). The fruits were evaluated for fresh weight loss, firmness, total chlorophyll, total extractable polyphenols and total antioxidant activity. As for refrigeration, the vacuum treatments showed a lower fresh weight loss for fruits packed with nylon or polypropylene. Firmness decreased along the experiment, regardless of packing and atmosphere condition. The antioxidant activity increased up to the end of storage in all the treatments. Both the polypropylene and nylon/polyethylene under vacuum packing showed the best results for maintaining the murici quality.

The article presents the results of biochemical studies of the total antioxidant activity of the hepatoprotective collection of plant origin and its individual components, which show that it consists of birch leaves (Betulae folia), tansy flowers (Tanaceti flores), phytohepatol No. 2 (choleretic collection No. 2) and individual its components have pronounced antioxidant activity. More antioxidant activity founded in tansy and true hepatoprotective collection. Comparative tests of the flowers of meadowsweet, with the highest antioxidant activity, showed the promise of their use in the collections of medicinal plants as effective natural metabolic regulators. The total antioxidant activity of the water extract collection at 13.56% rel. exceeded the calculated value obtained by summing the activities of the individual components of the collection, which indicates the presence of synergism in their action, which may be of value for use in the treatment and prevention of liver diseases. When all components of the drug collection are finished, the indicator increases by 11-24 % rel., which indicates the thermal stability of the antioxidant substances that make up their composition. In the oxidation of aqueous extracts of the components of hepatoprotective collection with hydrogen peroxide, the most stable were antioxidants of birch leaves. It was found that collection only at a ratio of 7.7 g per liter of water shows synergism (15 % rel.), and the rest of all the samples we tested are antagonistic. The detected increase in the antioxidant activity of the new collection compared with the effects of its individual components allows us to consider it as a promising dosage form for use in the treatment and prevention of liver diseases.
