Data on the diversity of coastal and aquatic vegetation of Lake Galich in the Kostroma region are presented. An assessment of the ecological state of the lake is given based on indicator plant species and the state of coastal water vegetation.

Relevance of research. As a result of economic activities and irrational use of water and land resources in small river basins there are problems connected with pollution, destruction of natural landscape complexes of river valleys and adjoining territories, engineering reorganization of canals and floodplains as a result of melioration works. All these changes in river basins require operational control and response, which is possible only if real estimation of the level of anthropogenic load on river basins is carried out and the limits of permissible economic interference in their ecosystem are determined. The purpose of research – assessment of the ecological condition of the basin of the Veselukha River by the criteria of anthropogenic load. Research methods. The analysis of anthropogenic load and evaluation of the ecological condition of the Veselukha River basin was carried out in accordance with "Methodology for calculation of anthropogenic load and classification of the ecological state of small river basins of Ukraine". The calculation was made using the logic-mathematical model "Small River Basin", for four independent models of the main subsystems of the river basin: radioactive contamination of the territory, land use, use of river runoff, water quality. The quantitative and qualitative anthropogenic conditions by various indicators of four subsystems for classification of the ecological state of the river basin were estimated. Research results. According to the state of radioactive contamination, the area of the river catchment was estimated as "satisfactory". Based on the results of the analysis, the integrated value of land use was 3.7 and the state of the subsystem "Use of land" in the basin of the Veselukha river was determined as "good". The general state of river runoff use in the basin based on the joint effect of all these indicators of anthropogenic load on the state of the subsystem "Use of river runoff" was evaluated as "good" with a quantitative value of 3.0. The general condition of the subsystem "Water Quality" in the basin of the Veselukha River is characterized by the IV class of water quality, it corresponds to "polluted", with a quantitative level of -1. According to the results of the integrated assessment of all subsystems of the river basin, an induction coefficient of anthropogenic load (ICAN) was specified as is -1.0 and classifies the ecological state of the Veselukha River basin as "minor changes".

In the course of the study, various materials were studied and personal observations were made, on the basis of which the causes that negatively affect the state of the water area were identified, and ways to eliminate them in the future were proposed.

Abstract The survey of the ecological condition of eight lakes within the city limits of Freiburg included hydrochemical measurements and analyses (oxygen profiles, Secchi depth, pH, biochemical oxygen demand) together with biological parameters (chlorophyll a, phytoplanktonbiomass, Escherichia coli counts), as well as parasitic examinations. Only some of the investigated parameters are presented here. Seven of the eight lakes were found to be eutrophic. The process of eutrophication appears to be still in progress. One lake can be considered to be hypertrophic. Schistosome dermatitis was observed. The water quality in general was considered to be acceptable; suggestions to maintain or improve the water quality are made.

Despite the fact that the most changes in lists of threatened species reflect changes in knowledge rather than changes in conservation status, the lists continue to provide social and legal mandates for conservation; they are used to report on the state of the environment and to guide the allocation of scarce resources. There is a substantial under-representation of non-vascular species in threatened plant lists, reflected in an absence of documented extinctions among fungi and algae. Turnover in the composition of extinct flora lists in Australia suggests that the lists of threatened species may not be sufficiently reliable to form the basis for reporting on the state of the environment. They are of limited use in distinguishing between levels of threat and may not be a reliable guide for the allocation of scarce conservation resources among plant species. Systems for listing threatened species create a feedback loop, responsive to the subjective preferences of scientists, largely unresponsive to underlying true threats, self-perpetuating and accentuating bias with each iteration. Other tools, including formal decision approaches and the acquisition of new kinds of data, are needed to fill the roles.

Compared to other groups of organisms, plants require distinctive approaches in their conservation because of their keystone roles in ecosystems and economies. The state of the whole plant cover of the Earth should be of concern to conservationists – for its capacity to ensure the survival of plant species, deliver ecosystem services (locally to globally) and provide produce from plants in ecologically sustainable ways. The primary targets of attention in ecosystem-based plant conservation are the relationships between people and plants, as relevant to every locality, rather than the species-centric approach of conventional plant conservation. Moving plant conservation to an ecosystem-based approach will require the development of training programmes for field practitioners and of information systems for their use.

The Karatag gorge is one of the natural areas where valuable genetic resources (wild, fruit and many valuable species) are preserved. A characteristic feature of the region is the richness of the diversity of flora and vegetation, where the main formations of Tajik vegetation are noted (maple, hazel, almond, frame, juniper). The article summarizes the results of the authors’ field research on the study of the state of xerophilic forests in the Karatag gorge. For the first time, the authors cite original materials on the phytocenology of all formations of this type of composition. According to the results of our research, the Shibleak communities in the study area are distributed in high-altitude belts from low-hilly 600–800 m to middle mountains 800–1800, 2000 m. The main formations of this type in the study area are: Acer regelii, Crataegus pontica, Celtis caucasic, Pistacia vera, Amygdalis bucharica, Ampelopsis vitifolia, Atraphaxis pyrifolia. As a result of the study, 340 plant species, 6 formations and more than 25 vegetation associations were identified in the composition of the flora of this type of the study area.

RESUMO The permanence of a plant species in a forest community depends on its number of specimens and its distribution in the various sizes of individuals, including seedlings. Seedlings and seeds from a forest remnant in Pirassununga were collected and analyzed for the degree of threat, possible height of the adult individual, occurrence in phytophysiognomies and region and morphological aspects. 116 seedlings available in 39 morphospecies were collected, and the germination of collected seeds provided 40 species. The present study brought news regarding the morphological aspects, the identification and the distribution of seedlings of tree species in a riparian forest area in the Mogi Guaçu River Basin and in the State of São Paulo.

Uttarakhand popularly known as Dev Bhumi is widely believed to be the source of the centuries old traditional system of medicine called Ayurveda. The State is blessed with thousand of species; however, about 320 species have been identified having commonly growing. The forest department has reported about 175 species being commercially extracted and traded. The State Government in 2003 declared Uttarakhand as an Herbal State. After declaration of Uttarakhand as an Herbal State, the government took initiatives for sustainable cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants in a phased manner. As it is a newly formed state, Uttarakhand is being subject to many large projects especially hydroelectric projects, as part of development. These will adversely impact the forestland of the state. Many species of medicinal and aromatic plants have disappeared with the loss of oak forests. There is growing evidence that the many medicinal and aromatic plants species are declining in the wild. So the systematic cultivation of high value medicinal and aromatic plants under prevailing agro ecological condition is one of the sincere efforts in the direction of sustainable development. Recently the state Government has introduced several incentives and established The Herbal Research and Development Institute, State Medicinal Plants Board and Center for Aromatic Plants for the popularization of sustainable cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants. In these circumstances, our major objective is to explore the potential in medicinal and aromatic plants cultivation in Uttarakhand.

AbstractLarvae of Coquillettidia pertubans (Walker) are found in some marshes of permanent water with stands of aquatic vegetation. Eighty-six marshes, located within a 400-km2 area of Hennepin County, Minnesota, were examined in the fall of 1984 to determine factors that characterize C. perturbans breeding sites. We found that C. perturbans larvae attached to the roots of primarily Typha species although other plant species were also used. The water in sites with larvae was significantly deeper, lower in dissolved oxygen, and contained a significantly thicker layer of organic debris than sites without larvae. Larvae were associated with sites where Typha had specialized structures called water roots, which grow in the water column. Larvae inhabiting floating mats of vegetation were associated with interior openings within the mats.
