Stanje razmer v organizaciji se lahko zaznava, meri in predstavlja z različnih vidikov – tudi z vidika varnega in zdravega delovnega okolja. Učinki takšnega delovnega okolja se odražajo na zaposlenih oziroma na njihovem zdravju in počutju ter na rezultatih dela. Vloga zdravja in dobrega počutja zaposlenih v delovnem okolju je pomembna, saj pomeni eno ključnih determinant, ki vplivajo na uspešnost organizacije na eni strani in na drugi strani na prisotnost oziroma odsotnost zaposlenih z dela ter na drugo čustveno dojemanje dela in organizacije zaposlenih. Članek se osredotoča na predstavitev raziskav, projektov oziroma dobrih praks s področja izvajanja promocije zdravja in dobrega počutja zaposlenih v delovnem okolju, s ciljem predstaviti rezultate raziskav in projektov o donosnosti finančnih investicij v promocijo zdravja in dobrega počutja zaposlenih v delovnem okolju ter predstaviti dobre prakse s tega področja. Rezultati proučevanja kažejo, da obstajajo številni primeri projektov oziroma programov izvajanja promocije zdravja in dobrega počutja zaposlenih v delovnem okolju in so finančni učinki vloženih finančnih sredstev v zdravje in dobro počutje zaposlenih dolgoročno donosni. Slednje se odraža zlasti v zmanjšanju števila izgubljenih delovnih dni, kar je neposredno posledica boljšega zdravja in dobrega počutja zaposlenih v delovnem okolju.The conditions in an organization can be perceived, measured and represented through various aspects – including the aspect of a safe and healthy workplace. The effects of such workplace reflect in the employees, namely in their health and well-being as well as in their work results. Health and well-being of the employees play an important role in the workplace as they represent one of the key determinants that have an impact on the organization’s performance on the one hand, and the employees’ presence or absence from work, as well as the employees’ acceptance of the work and organization on the other hand. This paper focuses on the presentation of studies, projects and good practices in the field of implementing the promotion of health and well-being of the employees in the workplace with the aim to present the findings of the studies and projects regarding the relevance of financial investments in the promotion of health and well-being of the employees in the workplace and to present good practices in this field. The study results have shown that there are numerous cases of projects and programs designed to implement the promotion of health and well-being of the employees in the workplace and that the financial impacts of the financial resources invested in health and well-being of the employees are relevant in the long term. The latter especially reflects through the aspect of reducing the number of working days lost due to employees’ absence from work which arises directly as a result of improved health and well-being of the employees in the workplace.

Reconciliation emphasizes relationships as a crucial ingredient of political transition; this book argues for the importance of such a relational focus in crafting sustainable political transitions. Section I focuses on South Africa’s transition to democracy—how Mandela and De Klerk persuaded skeptical constituencies to commit to political reconciliation, how this proposal gained momentum, and how well the transition resulted in the goal of an inclusive and fair society. In developing a coherent theory of reconciliation to address questions such as these, I explain political reconciliation from three angles and thereby build a concept of reconciliation that corresponds largely with the South African experience. In Section II, these questions lead the discussion beyond South Africa into some of the prominent theoretical approaches to reconciliation in recent times. I develop typologies for three different reconciliation theories: forgiveness, agonism, and social restoration. I conclude in Section III that relationships created through political reconciliation, between leaders as well as between ordinary citizens, are illuminated when understood as an expression of a comprehensive “interdependence” that precedes any formal peace processes between enemies. I argue that linking reconciliation with the acknowledgment of interdependence emphasizes that there is no real alternative to reconciliation if the motivation is the long-term well-being of one’s own community. Without ensuring the conditions in which an enemy can flourish, one’s own community is unlikely to prosper sustainably. This theoretical approach locates the deepest motivation for reconciliation in choosing mutual well-being above the one-sided fight for exclusive survival at the other’s cost.

Understanding the key determinants of health from a community perspective is essential to address and improve the health and wellbeing of its members.  This qualitative study aimed to explore and better understand New Zealand-based Pasifika communities’ sociocultural experiences and knowledge of health and wellbeing. Fifty-seven participants were involved in six separate focus groups. Community coordinators co-facilitated and transcribed the discussions and conducted thematic analysis. The findings suggested two overarching themes: (1) ‘Pasifika experiences on poor health and well-being’: were based on sub-themes: (i) ‘recognisable issues’ (e.g., poor diet and lifestyle behaviours); (ii) ‘systemic issues’ that support the perpetual health issues (e.g., lack of knowledge and education) and; (iii) ‘profound issues’ that are often unspoken of and create long-term barriers (e.g., cultural lifestyle and responsibilities).  (2) ‘Hopes and dreams’ to improve health and well-being requires: (i) a family-centric approach to health; (ii) tackling systemic barriers; and (iii) addressing community social justice issues.  This study provides deepened insights on Pasifika communities’ understanding healthier living in the context of their cultural environment and family responsibilities. If we are to develop effective, sustainable programmes that prioritises health and well-being based on the needs of Pasifika communities, the findings from this study highlight their needs as step forward in overcoming barriers to healthier lives.

Do social media affect users’ mental health and well-being? By now, considerable research has addressed this highly contested question. Prior studies have investigated the effects of social media use on hedonic well-being (e.g., affect and life satisfaction), psychopathology (e.g., depressive or anxiety symptoms), or psychosocial risk/resilience factors (e.g., loneliness, stress, self-esteem). Yet, public concern over social media effects often centers on more long-term negative outcomes, which may be better captured by indicators of eudaimonic well-being. Indeed, neglecting the eudaimonic side of well-being may have introduced outcome omission bias, since eudaimonia is both conceptually and empirically distinct from other dimensions of mental health and may be uniquely affected by social media use. Specifically, psychology currently theorizes eudaimonic well-being to be best represented by the experiences of (a) meaningfulness, (b) authenticity, and (c) self-actualization. A research synthesis of how social media use relates to these core indicators of eudaimonia is currently missing, however. We thus present a first narrative review that synthesizes both theoretical and empirical links between three key social media uses (i.e., active, passive, and “screen time”) and eudaimonic well-being. The synthesis shows that while there are indeed several plausible theoretical links, the evidence is too scarce and inconsistent to allow definitive conclusions at this time. We instead give recommendations for how the field can close important gaps by investigating whether social media afford or constrain opportunities to find meaning, live authentically, and grow as a person.

This qualitative study analyzes the effects of solitary confinement on prisoners and the strategies used by them to cope with its difficulties. The findings indicate that solitary confinement is perceived as unfair and as intensifying hostile emotions and physical aggression, and that it is related to a range of long-term physiological, mental, and behavioral disorders. Three strategies are used to cope with the difficulties of solitary confinement: keeping to a ritualistic routine, a religious lifestyle, and physical exercise. We conclude that solitary confinement exacerbates the difficulties of detention and affects prisoners’ health and well-being for short and long terms.

This chapter addresses why people engage in creativity. This question can be answered at different levels. On the one hand, one can refer to what motivates creative people to do what they do. On the other hand, the question addresses a deeper level, that of how societies today are built and how they, in turn, construct the meaning and value of creativity. Nowadays, people consider creativity intrinsically valuable largely because of its direct and indirect economic benefits. However, creative expression also has a role for health and well-being. Creativity also relates to meaning in life. The chapter then considers how creativity can be used for good or for evil.

PurposeExcessive exposure to HAV can lead to hand–arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) which is a major health and well-being issue that can irreparably damage the neurological, vascular and muscular skeletal system. This paper reports upon field research analysis of the hand–arm vibration (HAV) exposure levels of utility workers in the UK construction sector when operating hand-held vibrating power tools.Design/methodology/approachAn empirical epistemological lens was adopted to analyse primary quantitative data on the management of hand-held tool trigger times (seconds) collected from field studies. To augment the analysis further, an interpretivist perspective was undertaken to qualitatively analyse interviews held with the participating company's senior management team after field study results. This approach sought to provide further depth and perspective on the emergent numerical findings.FindingsThe findings reveal that none of the operatives were exposed above the exposure limit value (ELV) and that 91.07% resided under the exposure action value (EAV). However, the Burr four parameter probability model (which satisfied the Anderson–Darling, Kolmogorov–Smirnov and chi-squared goodness of fit tests at α 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 levels of significance) illustrated that given the current data distribution pattern, there was a 3% likelihood that the ELV will be exceeded. Model parameters could be used to: forecast the future probability of HAV exposure levels on other utility contracts and provide benchmark indicators to alert senior management to pending breaches of the ELV.Originality/valueHAV field trials are rarely conducted within the UK utilities sector, and the research presented is the first to develop probability models to predict the likelihood of operatives exceeding the ELV based upon field data. Findings presented could go some way to preserving the health and well-being of workers by ensuing that adequate control measures implemented (e.g. procuring low vibrating tools) mitigate the risk posed.

Perceived partner responsiveness (PPR)—the extent to which people feel understood, cared for, and appreciated—has been identified as an organizing principle in the study of close relationships. Previous work indicates that PPR may benefit physical health and well-being, but how PPR is associated with personal benefits is less clear. One cognitive mechanism that may help to explain these associations is perceived control. Here we tested two competing models (moderation vs. mediation) in which we assessed whether perceived control might explain how PPR impacts health, well-being, and mortality in a 20-year longitudinal study of adults ( N = 1,186). We found that PPR has a long-term positive association with health, well-being, and mortality via increased perceived control and, in turn, decreased negative affect reactivity to daily stressors. These findings have important implications for understanding the cognitive mechanisms that link PPR to health and well-being.
