The article addresses serviceability of reinforcement in vertical mine shafts. The mathematical framework is presented for the dynamic processes in the capsule–reinforcement system. The main causes of the dynamic loads in the capsule–reinforcement system are discussed. The importance of the processes in the capsule–reinforcement system during movement of hoists in vertical mine shafts is emphasized. It is asserted that solely computational methods are not enough to analyze processes inside the capsule–reinforcement systems in shafts. It is required to examine actual parameters of shaft reinforcement, in particular, the actual stiffness of shaft guides. The actual measurement procedure of guide stiffness in potash mine shafts is presented. The full-scale tests data are set out in connection with the actual step of reinforcement in shafts. The actual and calculated values of stiffness of shaft guides are compared. Based on the obtained results, the variable stiffness coefficient is derived for the shaft guide stiffness for a few alternative of reinforcement step. Considering the described research findings and the many years-long experience gained in operation of mine shafts, the authors have drawn a conclusion on the necessity to take into account the factor of variable stiffness of guides in shaft design and construction in potash mines in the Upper Kama Potash–Magnesium Salt Deposit, especially in case when the shaft reinforcement step exceeds the project design standards.

Due to the many potential benefits and drama can offer in language learning, there has been a growing interest to use drama in ESL/EFL classrooms. However, the practice still causes many difficulties to both teachers and students due to several factors. This article reviews current theories and research findings on the use of drama in ESL/EFL teaching and learning to provide a better understanding of the use of drama to facilitate learning in EFL classrooms. It begins with current theories behind drama use in English learning. This section tries to clarify what drama is in the context of ESL/EFL, what benefits it offers, and what challenges teachers potentially meet. After that, the discussion focuses on a practical guideline for using drama in the classroom. It proceeds with a brief description of some useful drama techniques. The article ends by offering some concluding remarks.

Technological advances have touched nearly every aspect of human life in recent decades, including the world of work. This chapter provides an overview of how these advances have specifically affected talent management. Organized around the primary elements of the talent-management lifecycle (identifying talent, acquiring talent, developing talent, and evaluating talent), each section provides a summary of current research findings and practice trends, examples illustrating those trends, and questions to guide future research. Several themes cut across these sections, including (1) the potential for technology to help individuals to identify, grow, and manage their talent in a more proactive ways, (2) the increasing use of engaging simulations for recruitment, selection, and developmental purposes, and (3) the need for systematic research to investigate the many intriguing questions raised by technology’s dramatic influence throughout the talent-management field.

The South African construction industry has successfully held a positive role in the transformation of the country over the years through economic development, infrastructure, and job creation. The purpose of the study was to probe the challenges that hinder the progress of black female professionals to become successful entrepreneurs in the construction industry. The study pursued a quantitative research approach. A questionnaire-based survey was utilized to gather data from participants at the selected location of the Buffalo City Metropole, Eastern Cape. The research findings revealed that although there are still challenges faced by African females, there is still considerable growth of women-owned SMME’s and the retention of African female professionals within the construction industry has significantly improved. It was also concluded that the many Government initiatives have also played a key role in these successes, though participants have also noted that there are some areas for improvement on these programs.

AbstractThe study investigates the axial load behaviour of concrete filled battened steel columns not covered by the design standards. A series of full scale tests on two I-sections connected together with intermediate batten plates and filled with concrete were carried out. The main parameters varied in the tests are length of the members and strength of the concrete filling. One bare steel member was also tested and results were compared with those filled with concrete. The tests results were illustrated by load-strain curves. The main objectives of these tests were twofold: first, to describe behaviour of new steel-concrete columns and second, to analyze the influence of slenderness on load-carrying capacity.

Extremely preterm babies are at increased risk of less than optimal neurodevelopment compared with their term-born counterparts. Optimising nutrition is a promising avenue to mitigate the adverse neurodevelopmental consequences of preterm birth. In this narrative review, we summarize current knowledge on how nutrition, and in particular, protein intake, affects neurodevelopment in extremely preterm babies. Observational studies consistently report that higher intravenous and enteral protein intakes are associated with improved growth and possibly neurodevelopment, but differences in methodologies and combinations of intravenous and enteral nutrition strategies make it difficult to determine the effects of each intervention. Unfortunately, there are few randomized controlled trials of nutrition in this population conducted to determine neurodevelopmental outcomes. Substantial variation in reporting of trials, both of nutritional intakes and of outcomes, limits conclusions from meta-analyses. Future studies to determine the effects of nutritional intakes in extremely preterm babies need to be adequately powered to assess neurodevelopmental outcomes separately in boys and girls, and designed to address the many potential confounders which may have clouded research findings to date. The development of minimal reporting sets and core outcome sets for nutrition research will aid future meta-analyses.

The main purpose of this book is to give food technologists in industry and students in training a comprehensive review of research findings by Australian workers in government, university and industrial laboratories from 1900 to 1990. To further its aims as a reference book, detailed bibliographies of some 1400 research papers have been compiled particularly for the period prior to access of references through databases. Another aim was to draw attention to the many contributions which brought international recognition to their authors; particularly those who did not have the advantage s of modern separation, analytical and computational techniques.


Steel beams with sinusoidal corrugated webs are known since the middle of the last century. Their bearing capacity is widely studied, the design rules of these beams are included in the existing regulations, such as "Standards European Committee for Standardisation (CEN): DIN EN 1993:2007-02, Eurocode 3: Bemessung und Konstruktion von Stahlbauten - Teil 1-5: Aus Blechen zusammengesetzte Bauteile", SNiP RK 5.04-23-2002 "Steel Structures. Design Standards." and SP 16.13330.2017 "SNiP II-23-81* Steel Structures". However, there is still an open question about the bearing capacity of sinusoidal corrugated webs of beams with holes bordered with steel sleeves to ensure the stability of the wall. In this paper, a method for calculating beams with sinusoidal corrugated webs, weakened by round and square holes, which are bordered by pipes is proposed. To develop this method of calculation a numerical experiment was conducted. A number of finite element models of such beams with varying web thickness, beam length, diameter and hole location were created and analyzed using the finite element method. ABAQUS computer complex was used for calculations. The result of the research conducted is a technique that makes it possible to determine the bearing capacity of sinusoidal corrugated webs of beams with round and square holes, bordered by pipes. To confirm the theoretical calculations, full-scale tests were carried out.

Mol, Gedrag & Organisatie, Volume 19, September 2006, nr. 3, pp. 251-271 Meta-analysis is a quantitative integration of results of a series of empirical studies into a specific research question. The method of meta-analysis has obtained a dominant position in the social sciences and beyond, as it may help in obtaining an overview of the explosively increased number of research publications. This contribution discusses the basics and consecutive steps in performing a meta-analysis. A meta-analysis that we conducted on expatriates serves as an illustration. Next to the many points in favor of meta-analyses, such as having a better overview of a research domain and shifting the traditional focus on significances of effects to sizes of effects, several important controversies remain. One of these is the issue of waving away a specific cause of variance in research findings as a methodological artifact, or interpreting it as a meaningful case of variance. We maintain that every social or industrial- and organizational psychologist who wants to stay up-to-date scientifically should be able to interpret meta-analyses.

Relatively few tests have been conducted to determine the block shear capacity and behaviour of coped steel beam connections. Furthermore, design standards are inconsistent in the way they treat this failure mode and may predict capacities significantly higher than those determined experimentally. To address these issues, 17 full-scale tests were conducted on coped wide-flange beams. Parameters considered in the study include beam end rotation, end and edge distances, and bolt layout. Many of these parameters had not been systematically investigated prior to this research, and the effect of end rotation, i.e., the rotation at the connection due to flexural beam action, had not been examined. It is found that few of these parameters significantly affect the connection capacity, apart from the associated changes in net tension and gross shear areas. Following the laboratory tests, capacity design equations outlined in Canadian, American, European, and Japanese standards were examined. Tests-to-predicted ratios for each standard were calculated and compared. It was found that none of these standards accurately and consistently predict block shear capacity, especially when considering two-line connections.Key words: beams, block shear, bolts, connections, end rotation, rupture, shear, steel, tension, yield.
