The design of cities has long ignored the flows that shape the city. Water has been the most visible one, but energy and materials were invisible and/or taken for granted. A little over 50 years ago, Abel Wolman was the first to illuminate the role of water flows in the urban fabric. It has long been a search for quantitative data while the flows were mostly seen as separated entities. The fact they invisibly formed the way the city appears has been neglected for many years. In this thematic issue the “city of flows” is seen as a design task. It aims to bring to the fore the role flows can play to be consciously used to make spatial decisions in how and where certain uses and infrastructure is located. Efficient and sustainable.

AbstractThis study assesses the feasibility of electric three-wheelers as moto-taxis in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from a socioeconomic and technical point of view. The analysis is based on three pillars: (i) the acceptance of users (the moto-taxi drivers) for adoption, (ii) the vehicle specifications incl. battery type and size, and (iii) the role of the charging infrastructure. Findings are based on data from empirical field-work; methods used are qualitative and quantitative data analysis and modelling. Main findings include that moto-taxi drivers, who we see as most important adopters, are open towards electric mobility. They request however that vehicles should have similar driving characteristics than their current fuel-vehicles. As the market is very price sensitive, keeping the vehicle cost is of high importance. A high potential to lower these costs is seen by offering opportunity charging spots around the city. If such an infrastructure is being implemented the combination with suitable, cost competitive vehicles makes the transformation of the vehicle market towards electrification possible.

In contemporary society – according to Dennis Potter’s dictum – citizens have been transformed into consumers. The shift in social power behind this process is mirrored in the changing shape of the city. Tel Aviv, founded just eighty five years ago, is an extreme example of the interaction between urban conceptions and configurations and dominant social forces. By means of a schematic section through the history of the city, this paper attempts an assessment of the role of those forces and conceptions – or their absence – in determining the nature and scope of the present transformations of the urban fabric. Tel-Aviv is an assemblage of past and recent urban utopias, constrained by conditions, scaled-down and transformed, but still identifiable and influential. Partly “collision city” and partly “collage city” – in Colin Rowe’s terms – its growth, while chronologically continuous, resulted in a fragmented pattern; each district reflecting the urban ideals and historical conditions under which it came into being. Four determinant stages can be detected in the ascent of the city.

<p><strong>Resumen </strong></p><p>El análisis de la relación entre la movilidad cotidiana y los roles de género en la ciudad de Montería permite una aproximación a la forma como los individuos viven, experimentan su ciudad y al mismo tiempo cuestionar las posturas tradicionales desde la cual es analizada la movilidad cotidiana. Si bien, en la mayoría de los casos estudiados son los roles asociados a la vida pública los que estructuran los recorridos cotidianos, la realización de los quehaceres del trabajo de cuidado son los encargados de limitar y organizar las rutinas cotidianas especialmente en quienes cumplen el rol de madres.</p><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>The analysis of the relationship between daily mobility and gender roles in the city of Monteria allows an approach to the way peoples live, experience their city and at the same time question the traditional positions from which daily mobility is analyzed. Although, in most of the cases studied, it is the roles associated with public life that structure the daily journeys, the performance of the tasks of care work are responsible for limiting and organizing daily routines especially in those who fulfill the role of mothers.</p>

This study attempts to examine and analyze in detail the role of the community in disseminating the Darut Tafsir Islamic Boarding School at the city of  Bogor, West Java. For more details, this study examines in detail on "how to promote community participation in Darut Tafsir Islamic Boarding School?", Which focused on: 1) community participation in boarding school socialization planning, 2) community participation in boarding school socialization leading, 3) community participation in boarding school socialization controlling. This study will use a qualitative approach and methods used in this study is the case study method. The urban condition is today being radically transformed. Urban restructuring is accelerating, new urban spaces are being consolidated, and new forms of urbanization are crystallizing. How can these transformations be deciphered? In this book, critical urban theorist Neil Brenner argues that confronting this challenge requires not only intensive research on urban restructuring but new theories of urbanization. To this end, Brenner proposes an approach that breaks with inherited conceptions of the urban as a bounded settlement unit—the city or the metropolis—and explores the multiscalar constitution, political mediation, and ongoing rescaling of the capitalist urban fabric, from the local and the regional to the national and the planetary. New Urban Spaces offers a paradigmatic account of how rescaling processes are transforming inherited formations of urban life, the role of multiscalar state spatial strategies in animating them, and their variegated consequences for emergent patterns and pathways of urbanization. The book also advances an understanding of critical urban theory as radically revisable: key urban concepts, methods, and cartographies must be continually reinvented in relation to the relentlessly mutating worlds of urbanization they aspire to illuminate.

AbstractThe only building which has been preserved from the ancient urban fabric of Tripoli, Oea in antiquity, is the Triumphal Arch. By considering Arab sources, we may shed new light on its evolution, the place it had been in the past and the way it was considered during those times. If we compare two excerpts from Arab-Muslim historiography, written by local travellers, with Western testimonies, we see that the monument was reinterpreted in the light of the new culture which was established in the region and of the local history of the city.

This article reports oh a study of the housing needs of people with disabilities (aged 16 to 65) in Shropshire. The study included interviews with disabled people and with frontline and managerial staff in several agencies, a survey of disabled people, and the analysis of quantitative data. The findings highlight the high level of need for adaptations and more appropriate housing for disabled people; the importance of greater user involvement in the way needs are identified and services provided; the need for reform of the Disabled Facilities Grant system; and the need for an integrated inter-agency approach to meeting disabled people's housing needs.

The following publication is an attempt to describe observed reality, especially in terms of conditions provided for play. This article is the result of author’s research visit at the City of Berkeley’s Marina Adventure Playground. During the visit the author had the opportunity to attend the unique and dynamic play environment of adventure playground in Berkeley Marina that enables its users to saw, hammer, build forts, play with water and fire. At the same time the it was designed in the way that encourages to play not only children’s but also adults. The presented content includes: the concept of playground in Berkley, its the design of space and play equipment, its policy and role of play leaders. The research methodology included qualitative procedure. Qualitative analysis, ethnographic observation and qualitative research interview has been used.
