Analysis of special features of the reproductive system of so-iuy mullet Planiliza haematocheila (Temminck & Schlegel, 1845) females from the Azov and Black Sea Basin at the end of the winter season, 2019, has been conducted using the size of oocytes as its basis. Individual differences in distribution of oocyte sizes during the period of trophoplazmatic growth have been identified. Following the estimation of ordered series of oocyte sizes during the period of trophoplazmatic growth, the median and percentile values have been calculated; they can be used as reference values for qualitative characterization of ordered series for oocyte diameter in an individual specimen, using the empirical median, calculated for the respective specimen, as a basis. It has been found out that the sizes of trophoplazmatic growth oocytes, which are utilized during the spawning period of the current year, and, therefore, the degree of gonad maturity have individual characteristics independent of the age of an individual, of its length and weight, and of the content of reserve and bioactive substances in its tissues and blood.

Dengue cases have grown significantly in Brazil in recent years. Studies with plant extracts show the insecticidal potential of bioactive substances that become candidates for future commercial products. This work evaluated the larvicidal effect of essential oil, without hydrolysis of Cyperus articulatus var. nodosus against the third and fourth wide stage of Aedes aegypti, which reduces larvae survival by as much as the 3th and 4th instar of Ae. aegypti. A chemical characterization of the hydrogen skeletons was performed by the GC-MS, revealing verbenone (%), trans-sabinol (%) and mirtenol (%) as major compounds.

AbstractMicroalgae and cyanobacteria could play an important role in crop protection, since they produce bioactive substances that promote plant growth and/or trigger the plant resistance mechanisms. The present study focuses on the control of bacterial canker caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis on tomato plants by using sonicated extracts from cyanobacteria and microalgae of the genera Leptolyngbya, Nostoc, Chlorella, and Scenedesmus. For the development of this study, 8 strains were firstly tested for their capacity to inhibit the growth of C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis in vitro, as well as to produce cytokinins and salicylic acid. In order to discard those more phytotoxic strains, the germination index was also estimated in watercress seeds. Scenedesmus-677 and Leptolyngbya-1267 strains were selected in this first phase based on their pesticide and phytostimulant capacity in vitro. Subsequent bioassays on tomato seedlings showed that root application of Scenedesmus-677 could be more aimed at controlling the disease caused by C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis, while foliar and root application of Leptolyngbya-1267 seems to be more related to the strengthening of the plant through the salicylic acid route. These preliminary results could serve as the basis for a deeper characterization of the biopesticidal and biostimulant effect of both strains, as well as to reveal the benefits derived from the combination of both capacities.

Fruit processing contributes significantly to the agricultural exportation of the Amazonian; however, it generates large amounts of solid waste, despite its high content of bioactive compounds and nutritional properties, and they are discarded in the environment. Therefore, in order to add economic value and potential reuse of agro-industrial by-products from cocoa, cupuassu, pracaxi, and tucumã, we investigated the chemical characteristics of the seed by-product resulting from the industrial extraction of these oils. The investigation of the nutritional and chemical composition of by-product was submitted to green extraction, besides other qualitative and quantitative techniques for the characterization of the main bioactive compounds. The extracts obtained from these by-products had a significant total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity. HPLC analysis identified and quantified some flavonoids present in these by-products (gallic, caffeic and protocatechuic acid, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, epicatechin, catechin, and quercetin). The oil from these species is widely used in the treatment of skin scarring and inflammation and is also used by the cosmetic industry. These results show that these by-products have a great potential for use, since they still have bioactive substances in their composition, which could alternatively be used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, or food industries.

The aim of this study included the phytochemical screening of extracts and essential oil of Erodium cicutarium (L.) L’Hér. ex Aiton (Geraniaceae), a native traditional medicinal plant from Croatia, as well as a highly detailed micromorphological characterization of its aerial parts. The contents of total polyphenols and tannins (TP and T), total flavonoids (TF), and total hydroxycinnamic derivatives (THD) in plant extracts were quantified in plant material from 4 localities (Plitvice, Podvinje, Buzin, and Trešnjevka). The contents of TP, T, TF, and THD significantly varied depending on the collection site, and were in the range of 4.78%-12.85% (TP), 3.23%-5.80% (T), 0.42%-1.09% (TF), and 1.08%-2.59% (THD) of dry weight of plant material, with the Plitvice collection having the highest polyphenol content. GC-MS analysis of the essential oils showed a similarity in composition of the major compounds from all investigated populations. Fifty compounds were identified in all 4 investigated oils (90.4%-96.7% of total oil) and classified into 7 structural classes, with hydrocarbons (59.8%-65.7%) as the main class of constituents. Two types of trichomes, nonglandular and glandular, were observed on the calyces, leaves, and stems, including 3 capitate trichome types. The bioactive substances and micromorphological characterization of Croatian populations of E. cicutarium were investigated for the first time. In general, the scanning electron microscopy imaging of Erodium cicitarium trichomes has not been reported before.
