The Karaganda coal basin is characterized by a complex structure. The presence of geological inconsistencies such as tectonic disturbances, washouts, variable reservoir hypsometry, etc. makes it difficult to conduct underground mining operations. Currently, in the world practice, mine seismic exploration is widely used for the purpose of studying the geological structure and solving various mining problems. Safe and productive operation of treatment faces in underground coal mining requires a timely and reliable forecast of the mining and geological conditions of the structure and condition of the coal-bearing mass from the mine workings. The most accurate and reliable picture of the tectonic structure of the Carboniferous massif can be obtained using methods of mine seismic exploration to study the geological structure and conditions of the coal bed and host rocks. The main goal of implementing modern methods of mine seismic exploration was to conduct mathematical modeling to assess the possibility of identifying tectonic disturbances with an offset amplitude of the order of magnitude and higher than the reservoir capacity using various methods of underground seismic exploration - the seismic transmission method (STM) and the reflected wave method (RWM). For this purpose, physical models of sections of the Carboniferous massif were developed, including a geometric description of geological structures, the distribution of rock densities, velocities, wave propagation and their influence on compression, and the shift of the mountain range. One of the models corresponded to a section of the formation without geological disturbances, and the second one - to a section with tectonic disturbances with displacement amplitudes from 5 to 15 m. The results obtained can be used in the development of modern effective methods for predicting the state of the mountain range in complex mining and geological conditions of both the Karaganda coal basin and other coal basins with a complex geological structure. Initially, seismic surveys were performed using the method of reflected waves using the common depth point method. However, the problem of obtaining an objective image of the geological environment is still relevant, due to the peculiarities of elastic wave excitation in mine conditions (features of the generated wave field, patterns of its propagation, the direction of the source). The method of mine seismic survey based on channel and boundary waves registration was developed and applied. This method allows obtaining a detailed geological and geophysical model of the field site. Due to the processing of both types of waves, the resolution of the method is increased to obtain information about both the coal bed and the host rocks, and, in particular, the state of the roof of the formation. The method of measurements in mine conditions is presented, the results of testing the method of performing field work in mine conditions are shown, and seismic characteristics with high contrast and clear traceability of reflecting boundaries are obtained.

Abstract The paper presents the characteristics of seismic tremors and rockbursts that occurred between 2001 and 2015. The characteristics are based on a general description of the geological structure of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). The level of seismic activity in the analysed period changed a number of times and depended on the intensity of mining works and diverse mining and geological conditions in each of the five regions where tremors occurred (Bytom Trough, Main Saddle, Main Trough, Kazimierz Trough, and Jejkowice and Chwałowice Troughs) and which belong to various structural units of the Upper Silesia. It was found out that in the case of rockbursts the phenomena were recorded in three regions. These are: Main Saddle, Bytom Trough, and Jejkowice and Chwałowice Troughs. The so called Regional Rockburst Indicator (RWT) was estimated for each of the regions where the rockbursts had been recorded. The obtained values of RWT are presented against the Probability of RockBurst (PT) in a given area.

AbstractIn deep tunnels with hydro-geological conditions, it is paramount to investigate the geological structure of the region before excavating a tunnel; otherwise, unanticipated accidents may cause serious damage and delay the project. The purpose of this study is to investigate the geological properties ahead of a tunnel face using electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and tunnel seismic prediction (TSP) methods. During construction of the Nosoud Tunnel located in western Iran, ERT and TSP 303 methods were employed to predict geological conditions ahead of the tunnel face. In this article, the results of applying these methods are discussed. In this case, we have compared the results of the ERT method with those of the TSP 303 method. This work utilizes seismic methods and electrical tomography as two geophysical techniques are able to detect rock properties ahead of a tunnel face. This study shows that although the results of these two methods are in good agreement with each other, the results of TSP 303 are more accurate and higher quality. Also, we believe that using another geophysical method, in addition to TSP 303, could be helpful in making decisions in support of excavation, especially in complicated geological conditions.

Heiyu Lake zone of Daqing is located in the southwest hollow borderland of Heiyu Lake and on the arching transitional zone of Daqing placanticline. Based on the geological background of Heiyu Lake, this paper analyzes the landform, the regional geological structure, the formation lithology and the irruptive rock and other metallogenic conditions in detail. The indispensable geological conditions for forming geothermal field in layers were summed up. Combining with the development characteristics and geophysical data of formation, the bore hole site of geothermal well and target stratum were ascertained. The four major elements of forming geothermal resources in this region were confirmed by carrying out geothermal drilling.

Serra da Pedra Branca (SPB) is a mountain range located in the Southwestern portion of the state Minas Gerais, in the municipality of Caldas (21°58′-21°55′S, 46°24′-46°22′W). It is a striking feature in the landscape, between 1100 and 1780 m.s.m., in a region that is part of the Atlantic Forest Domain and is considered as a priority area for conservation of the flora in Minas Gerais state. The vegetation is composed by a mosaic of “campo de altitude” (which occupy the greatest extension in the area), Seasonal Semidecidual Montane Forest, Dense Ombrophilous High-Montane Forest and Mixed Ombrophilous Forest. The aims of this study was the elaboration of a floristic survey of SPB added to the specimens collected by Anders Fredrik Regnell in the nineteenth century in Caldas and to analyze its floristic similarity with altitude areas of the Southeastern Region of Brazil. There were recorded 502 vascular plant species, distributed in 274 genera and 100 families. The majority of recorded species present herbaceous habit, terricolous, saxicolous and/or rupicolous (representing around 58% of recorded species), predominantly occurring in the “campo de altitude” (ca. 46%). The richest families were Polypodiaceae (20 spp.) and Dryopteridaceae (10 spp.) among the ferns, and Orchidaceae (56 spp.), Asteraceae (27 spp.) and Fabaceae (26 spp.) among the angiosperms. Just one species of gymnosperm was recorded, Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze (Araucariaceae). Five new records were made for the Minas Gerais flora, 13 species are cited as threatened with extinction in the state and at least six are endemic to SPB. Amongst 127 species collected in XIX century in the region, only 29 collected again, while 375 new records were made for SPB. The analysis of floristic similarity performed between the flora of SPB and other altitude areas of Southeastern Region revealed isolation of SPB in relation to other areas, highlighting its floristic peculiarity, which can probably be explained by its location in a distinct hydrographic basin. The vegetation of the SPB must be considered as endangered since the presence of endemic species and/or threatened species, associated with local environmental conditions suffering accelerated rate of destruction, highlight the need for urgent actions to preserve local biodiversity.

Information about the geological structure of Kuznetsky coal basin (Kuzbass) allows us to note that coal deposits developed by open-cast method are characterized by complicated conditions and have the following features: large length of deposits at significant depths of occurrence; coal series bedding of different thicknesses (from 1 to 40 m); different dip angles (from 3 to 90º); a significant number of dip and direction disturbances; different thickness of unconsolidated quaternary sediments (from 5 to 40 m); a wide range of strength values of rocks. In addition, there is a thickness irregularity and frequent variability of elements of occurrence of coal seams within the boundaries of a quarry field both in length and depth of mining. From the point of view of open-pit mining, such deposits are complex-structured. The factors listed above have a decisive influence on the choice of technical means, the order of development and the possibility of carrying out surface mining operations. Therefore, there is a need for a systematization of mining and geological conditions for the development of coal deposits, the purpose of which is to ensure a process of evaluation of complex-structured coal deposits for the development of coal-bearing zones by various complexes of equipment.

The research area of the present study was the municipality of Paraúna, Goiás state, Brazil, in the mesoregion of Southern Goiás, Vale do Rio dos Bois microregion. Paraúna stands out for its great tourist potential, having various tourist attractions such as the geological structure Ponte de Pedra, the mountains Serra do Galés and Serra da Portaria, among others. The State Park of Paraúna, created by the law-decree Nº 5.568 of March 18th, 2002, is also part of this municipality. This study aimed to analyze and discuss the geodiversity based on geology and geomorphology of Paraúna. The term geodiversity consists of a variety of landscapes, geological environments, rocks, soils, fossils, minerals and other surface deposits that support life on Earth. We identified and mapped seven Geodiversity sites in the northern region of Paraúna municipality.

Bandar Lampung is one of the cities in Indonesia, which has a potential to land subsidence due to the extraction of ground water, mining, land conversion, and geological conditions. For that reason, carried out the study of land subsidence with SBAS technique, due to the very lack of information about the symptoms of land subsidence in Bandar Lampung. In this study, 15 SAR data in 2006 to 2011 used and then combined to produce 40 interferogram then inverted resulting in a time-series deformation and deformation speed average. Velocity precision obtained with SBAS technique is highly dependent on the type of land cover in the study area, but it is known that the average of land subsidence in Bandar Lampung is about 0.06 mm/year, which is considered quite stable due to the geological structure that does not allow for the occurrence of massive consolidation process. Several areas have indications of subsidence 5 mm/year are suspected to be caused by tectonic activity and human activity (industrial, mining, extraction of groundwater, and land conversion), which then has implications for structural damage to buildings, flooding in coastal areas, and landslides in hilly areas.

AbstractThe paper presents the variability of hard coal output, methane content and methane emissions into coal workings and into the atmosphere from the two most methane-gassy coal mines in Poland. The Budryk mine is one of the youngest mines in Poland, but it is the most methane-gassy as well. In 2016, the total CH4 emissions exceed 140 million of m3. This large increase in methane emissions to mine workings is primarily related to the increase in the depth of coal extraction (up to 1290 m) and, consequently, the rapid increase in the methane content in coal seams (up to 10–12 m3/Mg coaldaf). On the other hand, in the Pniówek mine, methane emission was the highest at the beginning of the study period (1986–1991). During the following years, emission decreased to the values of less than 140 million of m3, which were still one of the largest amounts of emitted methane in the entire Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The coexistence of natural factors, such as the geological structure and gas distribution, as well as mining-related factors, i.e. the depth of mining, the intensity of coal extraction determines the temporal variability of methane emissions in the studied mines.

The article is devoted to the elucidation of the nature of the wave field recorded below the supporting-dominant seismic horizon «P» in the Middle Kura depression of Azerbaijan. A brief overview of the work carried out here is given; it is indicated that some geologists and geophysicists of our country, in our opinion, mistakenly assume that the observed wave field below the specified horizon is formed mainly by multiple reflections. Since the introduction of the common depth point method into the practice of seismic exploration, individual areas of the Middle Kura depression in Azerbaijan, including the Yevlakh-Agjabedi trough, have been repeatedly studied with varying degrees of frequency tracking. On the basis of this, a fairly large number of promising structures have been identified and mapped. But the structure of the Mesozoic, in particular the deposits of the Upper Cretaceous, still remains insufficiently studied. The study of the geological structure of the Mesozoic sediments, which are considered promising in terms of oil and gas content, is an urgent geological task; exploration work was carried out in the studied areas of the Middle Kura depression using a complex of geophysical methods at the modern technical and methodological level and new results were obtained. The constructed seismic sections show a dynamically pronounced and well-traceable seismic horizon corresponding to the Mesozoic surface and located deeper than it, relatively weak, short, discontinuous reflective boundaries that characterize the structure within the Mesozoic deposits. The studies carried out on the basis of modeling and velocity analysis made it possible to prove that the wave field in the time interval corresponding to the Mesozoic deposits owes its origin to intermittent single reflections from volcanic-carbonate deposits of the Upper Cretaceous age.
