The article analyzes the monograph Essays on the History of Hydrochemistry in Ukraine (author Valentyn Khilchevskyi – professor at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv), published in 2020.This is the first such monographic study. The monograph is devoted to the history of hydrochemical studies of surface waters in Ukraine. In the introductory part, an excursion on this issue was carried out in the XVIII-XIX centuries. The first part of the book is devoted to a review of hydrochemical studies of surface waters and their quality, which were carried out by Ukrainian scientists of the institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, industry institutions and institutions of higher education (1920-2020). As the author of the monograph notes, today scientific hydrochemical schools have been preserved at the Institute of Hydrobiology of the NAS of Ukraine (Kyiv), the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and the NAS of Ukraine (Kyiv). They are engaged in hydrochemistry at the Ukrainian Institute of Environmental Problems (Kharkov). Among the higher educational institutions, it is worth noting the scientific hydrochemical school of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, which has a prominent place in the development of the educational and methodological base, the creation of the first basic textbooks on hydrochemistry in Ukraine. They deal with individual issues of hydrochemistry at Odessa State Ecological University, Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, Yuriy Fedkovich Chernivtsi National University, Lesya Ukrainka Eastern European National University (Lutsk), National University of Water Management and Nature Management (Rivne). The second part describes the formation and history of the scientific hydrochemical school of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (1970-2020), to which the author himself belongs. The information and facts presented in the monograph will be of extreme value from the standpoint of studying the history of hydrochemistry by young scientists, since today there is a reform in science and education, new concepts and terms are being introduced. For example, the nomenclature of the names of specialties is changing. So, the recruitment of graduate students of hydrologists-hydrochemists since 2016 is already carried out in specialty 103 “Earth Sciences” to the educational and scientific program “Hydrology”. And from 2021, it is planned to completely switch to a new form of defense of dissertations (in particular, the degree of candidate of sciences will be replaced by the degree of Doctor of Philosophy). The book will be useful to scientists and practitioners dealing with issues of hydrochemistry and water quality, teachers and students studying hydrochemical and hydroecological disciplines.

The collections of Cryptophagidae beetles stored in the natural museums of Ukraine were studied: three academic and two university collections – State Museum of Natural History, National Museum of Natural History and I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Zoological Museum of T. Shevchenko Kyiv National University and Museum of Natural History of V. Karazin Kharkiv National University, and also author’s work collection. The volumes and the state of their preservation have been analyzed. The representation of different species in collections, as a whole, and in relation to the Carpathian fauna is evaluated. In general, museum collections contain 1346 samples of Cryptophagids, in each of which – about 210-340 individuals, all of them are stored in separate boxes and punctured by entomologic needles. The author's collection includes 1657 specimens of 57 species, which are mostly stored on cotton mattresses. All six collections include 122 species of 16 genera, containing from 21 to 85 species of this family. Some samples in collections have been lost for various reasons, in 10 cases there are only needles with labels without the samples themselves, therefore, some species (eg Cryptophagus nitidulus, C. hexagonalis) are represented in collections conditionally, only in labels. At the revision of materials attention is paid to taxonomic changes, through which in the publications and in the actual material different species or generic synonymic names were used. The author also took into account the uniqueness of each of the collections, which was determined by several important parameters, including the number of samples that are presented exclusively in some of the museum of species and genera of the family, the number of samples and type specimens in collection. For most of these parameters the leader is the collection of Zoological Museum of T. Shevchenko Kyiv National University. All data is included in the author's database, which contains summaries of annotations containing collections of samples, names of regions and localities of collection, dates, collectors, or owners of the collection, and also notes with clarifications of places or details of reidentifications.

The article describes history of creation and development of the Library of Lviv Academy of Veterinary Medicine for the period 1881–1944. The material presented is based on the works of famous professors, Academy tutors, Rector’s reports and documents of Polish authors concerning history of Lviv Veterinary Academy, veterinary science and education. The paper includes abbreviated biographies of Professor Anthony Baransky, the organizer and first curator of the Library, Professor Stanislav Krulikovsky, who 35 years guided the Library, Professors and Library curators Stanislav Niemchytsky, Adolf Gizelt, Andrzej Klisetsky, Doctor of Philosophy Ludwik Grajewski, as well as the librarians Theobald Skarzynsky, Lukash Kulchytsky, Leonidas Novitsky and Anastasia Shakhovska. Each of them made a considerable personal contribution to the development and operating of the Library. The influence of historical events on the linguistic structure of the fund and its replenishment is depicted and analyzed. The paper carefully analyzes the Library funding, which in different historical periods had its fluctuations, which influenced the acquisition of textbooks and periodicals subscription. The lack of funding in certain years substantially affected the completeness and even the abandonment of some important periodicals. During the years of economic instability, the Library was mainly funded from the sources received for library services from library readers. The article contains interesting personal information concerning the Library staff, as well as the Library exlibris. The complicacy of recollection of the historical background of Library’s formation and early years of its running is due to the limited number of documents covering period before the year 1944, especially concerning «white spots» of the period 1939–1944. The material presented is based predominantly on Polish sources, as well as on the original documents preserved in the librarian archives. Among the chief priorities of the Scientific Library of Lviv University of Veterinary Medicine is the maintenance of historical continuity, preservation of its rich and unique past, which is inextricably linked with the present. By this article its authors give tribute to the creators, curators and custodians of the Library.

This paper analyses ecological features of bryophyte species from the territory of the Pohulyanka Forest Park in the city of Lviv, Ukraine. A total of 141 species of bryoflora were analyzed (70 recorded for the first time). In the spectrum of life forms (LF), species with the following LF prevailed in the study area: turf (61 species, 43.3%), mat (48 species, 34%). Turf, the most common life form, was detected on all types of substrates, but was most frequently found on the soil (33 species, 23.4%) and stony substrates (13 species, 9.2%). Analysis of herbarium specimens (herbariums of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, National Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the Institute of Ecology of the Carpathians of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) and the results obtained with respect to the composition of the bryoflora suggest that since the mid-19th century, due to anthropogenic transformation of the study area, most species with LF weft (10 out of 15 species, or 66.7%) have disappeared, while the number of species with LF rough mat on the soil has increased. The apophytic fraction of bryoflora in the study area consists of 121 species (85.8%) belonging to 28 families and 66 genera, including four species in the division Marchantiophyta. In the composition of bryophyte flora, 67 species of eventapophytes were identified (47.5% of the total number of species). Dominant families are Brachytheciaceae, Mniaceae, Pottiaceae, Plagiotheciaceae, Orthotrichaceae, Polytrichaceae. Hemiapophytes comprised 24.1% (i.e. 34 species) of the total number of species. The largest number of hemiapophytes was found in the families Pottiaceae, Bryaceae, Amblystegiaceae and Orthotrichaceae. Among the spontaneophytes (20 species, 14.2%), the families Hypnaceae, Mniaceae and Polytrichaceae prevailed. Indigenophytes amounted to 20 species (14.2%). With regard to the relationship of bryophytes to light, the following groups were identified in the study area: ultraheliophytes, heliophytes, subheliophytes, hemisciophytes and sciophytes. The highest number of species was represented by subheliophytes and hemiscyophytes. Certain patterns were found in the ratio of sun-demanding species in groups of apophytes. Among the hydromorphs, the following groups were identified: ultraxerophytes (found only among hemiapophytes); xerophytes (prevailing in the group of hemiapophytes, but also found among eventapophytes); xeromesophytes, mesophytes, hygromesophytes and hygrophytes (represented in all anthropotolerant groups); hydrophytes (event- and spontan/indigenophytes).

The article is devoted to the history of UARR, its first steps – from the inception of the idea of creating a professional association of religious researchers to a constitutive conference and its decisions. On the basis of archival documents that we managed to collect, and surveys of participants of those events, the process of emergence and institutionalization of the society of religious scholars of Ukraine was restored. It was found that thanks to the enthusiasm of representatives of academic and university science, the solidarity of those who supported the tradition of studying religion, the awareness of the need to develop impartial scientific observation of the religious revival, in order to overcome post-communist stereotypes in relation to religion, in 1993 an association of researchers of religion appeared in Ukraine. The author dwells on the organizational aspects of the creation of UARR, highlights the role of certain scientific, educational, religious and cultural institutions which were the initiators of this process. UARR wouldn’t have appeared so quickly and efficiently without the broad support from interested people and organizations as well as friendly relations and assistance. The organizational basis of UARR comprised the principles of democracy in management, wide representation, creativity, personal and institutional interest both in the results and in the process of research of religiosity and history of religion in Ukraine. Special role in the creation of UARR belongs to the team of the Religious Studies Department of the Philosophy Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine headed by Professor A. Kolodnyi who was supported by his colleagues P. Yarotskyi, B. Lobovyk, P. Kosukha and M. Babiy. M.Babiy prepared a draft Charter and all the constitutive documents for the state registration of the UARR as a public organization. Without the participation of the Department of Religious Studies of Taras Shevchenko National University (V. Suyarko, Y. Kalinin), Department of Cultural Studies of Kyiv Pedagogical Institute and its head M. Zakovich, it is difficult to imagine that the initiative to unite scholars on religion would have so successfully spread throughout Ukraine. At the time of registration of UARR at the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine (1993), regional divisions were created in 13 cities. The idea of creating an association was ardently supported in Lviv, Chernivtsi, Ternopil, Odessa, Sumy, Uzgorod, Zhytomyr, Rivne, Lutsk, which showed the all-Ukrainian character of the new organization. The article presents evidences of scientific, educational, publishing activity of Ukrainian scholars in the early 1990s, when the foundations were laid for subsequent successful years of activity of Ukrainian scientists. The first steps witnessed the scale and ambitiousness of plans for the development of religious studies in Ukraine. Its conductors took the matter seriously, systematically and scientifically and defined the main directions of UARR: organizational, scientific publications and educational activities. UARR still moves in these directions annually attracting new members to religious research and dissemination of scientific knowledge about religion and religious organizations. The purpose of the article is to familiarize the wider community of study of religion with the first years of the emergence and institutionalization of religious studies in independent Ukraine. Scientific novelty is that for the first time archival documents on the beginnings of creation and development of activities of UARR are introduced which are supported by testimonies of those people who participated in those events.
