This paper deals with a methodological aspect of research which in its broadest sense was concerned with the relationship between social and cultural forms. More specifically, the research was concerned with measuring the effect on the predictability of speech of social contact in informal groups. Several kinds of data were obtained for estimating amounts of contact and degrees of inter-connectedness in small social networks, and these were related to a measure of speech predictability among the participants in the network.

The present research features the relationship between science and scientific research as internal elements of scientific knowledge. The subject is the methodological aspect in the study, namely, the theoretical self-consciousness of science in a specific historical period, the analysis of the evolution of socio-cultural forms of life of science – monodisciplinary, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, supra-disciplinary. Each of these forms once had historically formed methodological potential-techniques, methods, principles, ideals, and norms of knowledge. At each stage, new ways of understanding are formed, and new meanings that revolutionize science, practice, and culture are created. The increase in methodological equipment of science expands cognitive horizons. The changes in socio-cultural forms of science and the nature of scientific research are not synchronized, but they are internally determined. Approach as a methodological tool acts as a connecting link. The choice of methodological approach is determined by the methodological culture of the researcher and, as a rule, reflects the dynamics of scientific knowledge. The authors use the following methodological tools: dialectics of the historical and the logical, dialectics of content and form. They highlight the immanent connection of scientific research and science as the most important components of a specific form of cognition, i. e. science; show the interrelation between the socio-cultural form of science and its epistemological content; demonstrate the dynamics of the complexity of methodological tools in the history of science – from techniques and methods of research to such a methodological phenomenon as the approach, which, in turn, has yet to be investigated.

Popular festivities and traditional events are important moments in which symbolic content, deep emotions and community solidarity are developed. However, there has been little research on the relationship between such events and their social networks and the power relations within these networks. This paper explores the ability of community events and networks to reflect and strengthen social context. Rather than observing the capacity of the event to generate a network, we focus on identifying how the event network is constructed, and how it creates relationships between the different groups, or nodes, within broader social networks. The case analysed is the Correfoc de la Mercè, a traditional firework event in Barcelona involving the Colles de diables, or Catalan popular fire culture groups. Our findings show that there is a bidirectional link or a mutual dependence between the groups (or nodes) and the event, which also support the development of shared social and symbolic capital.

The article is devoted to the consideration of the peculiarities of the formation of informal groups in a penitentiary institution and the nature of their influence on the process of correction of convicts who are members of these groups. Statistics on crime in correctional institutions over the past year sare provided as well as actions that disrupt the work of correctional institutions. The reasons for the influence of the criminal subculture on the personality of the convict and the peculiarities of the formation of informal groups of various orientations (positive, negative and neutral) are considered. Particular attention is paid to the interdependent process of influence on the personality of the convict by the informal group and the administration of the penitentiary institution, on which the possibility of his correction largely depends. The psychological mechanisms underlying the introduction of a convict to informal groups of a negative orientation are analyzed. Psychological and pedagogical features of educational work with convicts in informal groups are described. The choice of meansis characterized as well as forms and measures of influence on the personality of the convicted person in informal groups. Specific features of educational influences on the personality of the convicted person, leading to certain changes in the personal sphere are examined. The circumstances for the most positive effect of educational work are considered, and the socio-psychological phenomena that are most effective are indicated, as well as various methods of preventive and intersecting influence. At the end of the article the importance of changes in the management and educational structures of correctional institutionsis discussed as well as changes in the styles of influence and the regime of detention of prisoners and the need to improve the level of psychological and pedagogical training of employees, expanding knowledge about the specifics of individual and group behavior.

This paper presents an attempt to systematically describe and interpret the evolution of different religious and political movements in Judaea during the period of the Second Temple using the methods of the theory of social networks. We extensively analyzed the relationship between the main Jewish sects: Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes (Qumranites), and later also Zealots. It is shown that the evolution of the relations between these sects agreed with the theory of social balance and their relations evolved toward more socially balanced structures.

Abstract Although the impact of dementia on the health and well-being of those living with Alzheimer’s Disease and related Disorders (ADRD) and their care partners has been widely studied, less attention has been paid to how the disease impacts individuals within the context of their larger social networks. This symposium presents findings from a series of integrated studies aimed at strengthening measurement of health and well-being among older adults with living with dementia and well-being among members of their social networks. Findings will be presented from five studies: (1) a scoping review of social network measurement in older adults in chronic illness, including dementia, that emphasizes the use of technology in measuring older adults’ social networks; (2) a simulation study to evaluate the feasibility and reliability of sensor technology to measure social interaction among a person living with dementia and others in their immediate surroundings; (3) development of a web-based application that allows older adults to map and activate their social networks; (4) a qualitative analysis of interviews from persons living with dementia, their unpaid caregivers, and paid caregivers from an adult day health program concerning well-being focused outcomes; and (5) a mixed methods analysis of the feasibility of using both traditional and novel measures of health and well-being deployed among networks of people living with dementia. Emerging technologies for measuring social networks health and well-being hold promise for advancing the study of the relationship-based nature of care for people living with dementia.
