In this paper examines the effects of low socioeconomic status in adulthood and in childhood on psychological characteristics, such as individual values, self-efficacy, self-esteem, psychological well-being and trust. The sample included people with low socio-economic status (namely poors) (N=162) and non-poor (N=188). Measurement of children’s socio-economic status was carried out by retrospective assessment. The results showed that values and self-esteem differ depending on the adult SES. The results revealed the significant effect of adult and childhood SES for trust and life satisfaction. The analysis revealed that adult status had a significant impact on trust only in the groups of those who did not experience poverty in childhood, i.e. the group with average levels of wealth in childhood, and the wealthy group. In conclusion, our study revealed the impact of childhood and adult SES on various individual psychological characteristics.

McAllister (2005) defined Well-being as “The absence of illness or pathology with subjective and objective dimensions” and states that Well-being can be measured at individual or societal level, accounting for the elements of life satisfaction that cannot be influenced by economic growth. Socio-Economic Status (SES) is defined as the hierarchy of social positions which describes a person’s social standing or class (Graetz, 1995) and gender refers to the array of socially constructed roles and relationships, personality traits, attitudes and behaviours that the society ascribes (Moser, 2003). The impact of Socio-Economic Status on Well-being studies the perception of the individual towards his/her Well-being in terms of their stand in the socio-economic strata of the society. There are no significant studies in this area of research correlating Socio-Economic Status, gender and Well-being of early adolescents and hence the study would be of importance. This research focuses on the measurement of the impact of Socio-Economic Status and gender on the Well-being of early adolescents, aged between 14-16 years. A purposive sample consisting of 200 adolescents (n=200), 100 boys and 100 girls from government and private schools in South India would be selected for the study. The Socio-Economic Status Scale (SESS) and the Personal Well-being Index- School Children (PWI-SC) will be used to measure Socio-Economic Status and Well-being respectively. The obtained data would be analysed using mean, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. The Socio-Economic Status is expected to affect the Well-being of children in terms of their personal as well as environmental conditions. The perception of Well-being is expected to be higher among girls than boys. The study will provide an insight of how the Socio-Economic Status of the family and gender will affect the perceived Well-being of the early adolescent. The study will serve as adequate data in understanding factors affecting Well-being and in devising ways of improving the basic needs of adolescents. It can help in the formulation of policies towards adolescents, in designing their educational curriculum, etc. It can also help in the designing of intervention for ‘at-risk’ adolescents.

The American scientist R. Tyler formulated the concept of “libertarian paternalism”, which outlined a strategy aimed at ensuring that a person makes optimal choices dictated by reasons, not feelings. These ideas formed the basis of the “nudge theory”. In this article, we make an attempt to consider the possibility of using the concept of pushing with reference to the urgent problems of today - the development of environmental patriotism in people. The concept of "environmental patriotism" reflects not only an active life position on the protection and restoration of nature, but also active participation in specific activities to strengthen environmental well-being. Ecological patriotism today is a real factor aimed at neutralizing the environmental challenges and threats of our time. The nudge theory with the development of environmental patriotism can be demonstrated by the example of the inclusion of a person’s individual resources, which in turn explains what exactly “shifts” in the process of pushing and makes a person make his choice: – Natural resources of a person: understanding the impact of the ecological situation on personal health, a clear vision of the essence of the influence of specific natural factors on the well-being, lifestyle and life expectancy of an individual, when any harm caused to nature is returned by a boomerang to different systems of the human body (the famous Russian saying is «more expensive for yourself» discloses this aspect well). For today researches conducted by the authors of the article show that so many people are united by the idea that their health is directly related to the ecology of the region in which they live. Through “encourage” we must try to do everything possible so that installations of this kind become a constant possession of environmental consciousness and the environmentally friendly behavior of people; – Personality orientation: awareness of the solidarity of their environmental positions and actions, their thoughts with the opinions and attitudes of other people and hence their social significance; – Skills and competencies: presentation of the possibilities of using one’s potentials to protect the environment, ensure its prosperity, to develop its talents that are somehow related to the natural world, for the prosperity of the environment; – Self-esteem and social status: the desire for high self-esteem, which necessarily includes elements of awareness of the role of “me” in the transformation of the world, in achieving harmonious unity with nature; – Communicative resources of the individual: a desire to interact with other people about the vital values that environmental activity is filled with because of its social and personal benefits (the popularity of various options for the “green” campaign in the West eloquently illustrates this). Today shows that it is not necessary to rely only on the consciousness and responsibility of citizens in the formation of a reasonable attitude to nature. The above positions and attitudes become that internal foundation on which a careful attitude of man to nature can be nurtured. In our opinion, the image of the planet’s environmental defender, the Swedish schoolgirl G. Thunberg, is often used today by foreign media and politicians precisely in con-nection with his (image) ability to encourage even poorly informed young people to appropriate behavior. The demonstrations and demonstrations held in defense of G. Thunberg's positions in many European countries have convincingly confirmed this.

The implications of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) lockdown measurements and social isolation in children and their parents are still unknown. The aims of this study were to examine the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on emotional state, feelings and lifestyle of children and their parents, to explore the association between parental characteristics and child well-being and to examine whether the impact of lockdown depends on socio-economic status. Parents completed an online survey including data about socio-demographic information, parent and child feelings and lifestyle during lockdown. Logistic regression and correlation analysis were used to establish associations between variables. In total, 814 parents with children between 4 and 11 were included in the study. According to parents, 69.5% of the children showed changes in their emotional state, 55.3% altered their routine and 62.6% showed sleep disorders. Families with lower socio-economic status were more worried about health, shortage of food and household income (p < 0.01). Parent and children concern about food/essential items were highly associated [OR (CI 95%) 13.0 (6.81, 26.5), p < 0.01]. Adverse children's emotional state was associated with parental feeling of loneliness (r = 0.35) and inversely associated with keeping a routine (r = −0.11). Sleep changes were inversely associated with keeping a routine and having a balcony/garden (r = −0.53 and −0.16). We conclude that lockdown affected emotional state and lifestyle of children and parents, which were strongly related. Routine and positive parental attitude supported children's well-being. Economic issues were an important concern in families with lower socio-economic status. Our findings can help to promote child health during lockdown.

Levels of debt and poor mental health are at an all-time high among UK families, while the gap between rich and poor has also widened. Exposure and susceptibility to advertising, belief that purchased products will lead to happiness (materialism), and poor mental well-being have been shown to be linked in previous research, but the role of children’s socio-economic status has seldom been taken into account. A greater understanding of the effects of this dynamic among those without the ready money to purchase highly advertised and desired products is important, particularly given the connections with children’s low self-esteem. This study aimed to (1) quantify differences in TV advertising exposure, materialism, and self-esteem between deprived and affluent children, (2) measure differences in susceptibility to the effect of TV advertising exposure on materialism between deprived and affluent children, and (3) measure differences in susceptibility to the effect of materialism on self-esteem between deprived and affluent children. It was found that children from deprived backgrounds were more materialistic than children from affluent homes, and that this was the result of both higher exposure to advertising and higher belief in the credibility of advertising. At the same time, we found that children from affluent backgrounds were more susceptible to advertising’s reinforcing effect on materialism, whereas children from deprived background were more susceptible to materialism’s detrimental effect on self-esteem. Two different dynamics appear to be at play in the two groups. This adds a new dimension to our understanding of the role of advertising in a society with high levels of inequality.
